Does any one knows?

Totally a guess, but I would be surprised if you could clear the chain on the brake with anything much smaller than 36T in the front. You're talking about an '87 or '88, yes?

i'm going by memory, here...

i ran a 40/16 on an '88 PFST and i think i had to switch to a regular brake up top. i know for sure i had a top caliper on it at one point, and i think that's why.

You can do a 36t but you've got to keep your chain tight.
