He isn't BMX, but he's a legend and I remember how his image, was just so cool. I think everybody in BMX knew who he was, for sure.. Seems skateboarding has been going retro lately too. New skateboarding does nothing for me, but that's 80's stuff rules.....I was at a book store today and seen him on the cover of the new Skateboard magazine. I was stoked. I know this guy has been through the ringer in the last 20 years, but to see him back on top, and riding is freaking stoke! Christian Hosoi is stoke...!!!!!!!!!!!

I met Christian in SF at the Embarcadero back in 1987. Like most pro skaters and bmxer's of that era, he was cool, down to earth and was just as stoked when you pulled a trick as a guy on a bike would be. Back then, everybody rode together. No lame rivalry like today...

I know I am going to snag the reissue deck, it's just like the Hammerhead I had back when. Hosoi is one cool customer.
King of Pipeline
THat dude, looks like he hasn't even aged.....

Here's a shot I took at the 1985 Venice Beach contest with Vander and Hasoi gapping the quarters with Windy takin' a shot for Freestylin'

Been at a couple of other events with him and totally cool and full of energy!

Vander and Hasoi bridged the relationship of skating and biking together and applaud their efforts. Much has been lost to support this since Dave's passing.

my next deck is going to be one of the new hosoi's...and a retro hammerhead to hang on the wall.

I was so cool in the 80's he knew of me.

They have Hosoi Tech Decks at our local target. The Christ air is still one of the coolest ramp tricks.

I had an all black Hammerhead back in the day.
I wonder what would have happened if he never stopped skating.
We might have played "Christian Hosoi Proskater"
instead of Tony Hawk.

I posted this somewhere else. I saw an interview or somehting with him and he said he was going to be featured and promoted in the first X games with Hawk, but he got sent to jail instead. Makes you wonder had he not gone to jail what would have happened.

There's my old Hammerhead lurking in the background...
King of Pipeline
I would be very interested, if somebody posted a recent interview about what he's all done, in the years..

The documentary was " Rising Son : The legend of skateboarder Christian Hosoi" It's pretty cool. Talks about his trouble and coming back.

Those skate videos back in the 80's were great!

There was an article -- I think in Sports Illustrated -- a while back about Hosoi and what happened to him. I think it was like five years ago.

One of my myspace friends....he's still deeply involved in the progression of skating today. Him, Mullen, Gonz.......Stoke

Yea KOP Hosoi is "stoke"...

I was never a skater because I could never even stand on the things without falling, but I rolled with the skaters bitd, because there was a kinship between the BMXrs and the skaters back then...lots of good times !

I saw both the docs on Hosoi and Gator, both were excellent. I'm glad to see things worked out a lot better for Hosoi than that scum bag Gator !

I posted a thread a couple of years back about the Gator doc after I saw it....some of the peeps around here knew Gator bitd, needless to say theres no love for him around here.

I love to watch skating, but I'd rather watch old footage of Hosoi, than any of the guys around now....the guy had style, he was a rock star !

That new mag cover is at the new Fontana Skatepark. Christian has always been a cool guy to ride with. He is always willing to give his time if he has it. I just recently took some pics of Christian at the All 80's All Day Contest at the Quicksilver Warehouse Dec. 3, 2008. It was one of the Best Skate contest I have seen in a long time.

Back in the 80's we all rode together. Some of my best friends to this day, were skateboarders in the 80's that I rode bike with. Everyday we'd go around town, and try to find spots. We all rode together, because we were lumped in the same group. Which was cool. And both groups took all the crap in school. Both groups were major outcasts, and I think that was a major bonding point..
mr coasterbrake
at that time, i worked at a shop that was BMX and skate. i'd say 75% of the locals did both (to some extent). everybody was cool with each other. i remember not being able to keep those first Hosoi decks in stock (were they skullskates?). i still have my original beat Hosio Tshirt somewhere.

i always watched skate vids at work 'cuz there weren't any BMX vids, yet (Rippin' & the 1st BMX Plus finally came out while i was there). Hosio, Magnussen, Mullen and Kasai (sp?) were my favorite to watch. good times... smile.gif

Back to the subject of Hosoi...

I saw Christian Hosoi in Little Rock, Arkansas a couple of years ago. He is now involved in a Christian skate/bmx ministry. He gave his testimony of how he was one of the biggest names in skateboarding and got hooked on cocaine. He also told about how he spent time in the pen, and turned his life to Christ.
