Those are BMX Products hard anodixed rims. The factory guys got the first ones the day before the 1984 NBL grands. I think they were available to the public a couple months later. Since they are anodized you should be able to remove the finish with oven cleaner.

If the suface is still in OK shape I would leave them. That was a special coating to help add strength. Wish I still had a pair.

If the finish is in good shape leave it alone, you will destroy their value

Otherwise; Oven cleaner takes forever, Draino gel works like a champ

Hey Jason,

Didn't they call that application on the rims, frame and forks "Smoked" anodized?

The frame/fork were Black or Smoked chrome...here are some pics below of my original 1982 Pro Class...the rims were Hard Anodized.

The black chrome was done on th Pro Class frames and forks and was just cosmetic. While the hard anodizing was for alum and was supposed to make the rims stronger to help since they had all the holes in them. The better rims we had were real Araya's(wheelset) while the complete bikes had Taiwanese rims with the holes and hard ano. The Goose factory had a machine to punch the holes, so we could bring in any rim we wanted and make them into drilled out Pro Class. Sam made his own cause he used 1.5 rims while most of us used regular 1.75. I even had a neon green pair.

They are in good shape, aside from a little brake rub on the rear and some rust on the spokes.
Okay, I'll leave the finish and just replace the spokes.
The hubs on these are different than the Suze's my other pro class rims have. Think I should lace them up with some Suze's or re-use the ones that are on there?

Do you have SR's on there now...? If they aren't Suzue they usually had SR's and ACS. Most SR's have the date on them...so you can check that also.

The Eric Rupe model is the only time I have seen the Sealed bearing Suzue's on the Hard Anodized hoops. The 24" Pro Class might have had them also...? It is up to you...to stay Mongoose correct...those are your 3 choices. I have laced them to Bullseye and Phil Wood...really look sharp.

Damn, you guys really know your S.
They say SR and the date is 85.
Oh, and when I just checked them, I noticed that the brake rub I mentioned is worse than I thought- its gone through the finish. Can they be re-anodized? If not, or its cost prohibitive, I may have to polish them.
So whats better, the Suze or SR?

I've always liked the Suzue's best out of the three.

If the brake rub is pretty bad...you can just remove the anodizing from the sides and leave the center as is. They have a cool look to them when done that way also...plus you leave some of the Hard Anodized look to them. Also very cool to leave the gold Pro Class series III decals as well...!

That is a brilliant idea!

What process would you recommend to remove the finish from the side of the rim?

Okay, so heres the tally-
Anodization 10
Me 0

I have tried every chemical at my disposal and nothing removes this finish.

Ideas?
I know its been done. How??

Just give them a good cleaning, maybe just some rubbing compound. I still have some Pro class rims but they are just plain silver. The Hard Anno ones are really cool.

I tossed a mint set of hard ano PCs along with some sweet sealed SR hubs in the trash probably a year or so before gettin bit by the BMX bug again... sad.gif

I remember trading my buddy a set of white Tuffs for them when he 1st got his Goose, and then I never used them....sat in my basement for 18 years, and then tossed them while doing some spring cleaning....I HATE MYSELF RIGHT NOW !

At least my wife talked me out of tossing out my PK loop...

Those are awesome rims, and are one of my all-time faves...

They would look trick if you can figure out how to cleanly remove the ano from the sidewalls only...then polish the sidewalls----Sweet !
