1977 DG 'Steve Skibel Replica' model

In April, 2008, I picked up this frameset at a swap meet. It was stripped of it's original finish and spray painted black. I thought it would be fun to try to do a lightweight 1970's 'mini/junior' project using tips and tricks from the old magazines of the day. Other than the painted frameset, everything is original finish.
  • FRAME: 1977 DG 'SSR' model. Serial Number DG 677 861
  • FORK: Powerlite
  • HANDLEBARS: Junior-sized box bars
  • NUMBER PLATE: Hunt Wilde
  • NUMBER PLATE DECALS: Tape
  • GRIPS: Oury
  • STEM: SR alloy gooseneck
  • HEADSET: Shimano road
  • RIMS: Araya 7B
  • SPOKES: .080 stainless steel
  • HUBS: Dura Ace road hubs (with QR front and hollow axle rear)
  • BRAKES: Weinmann center pull 610 fit to rear
  • BRAKE PADS: Weinmann
  • BRAKE LEVER: Weinmann
  • TIRES: Carlisle 'Diamond tread' both 20x1.75
  • PEDALS: Lyotard 1977 BMX pedals
  • CRANKS: Dura Ace
  • BOTTOM BRACKET: Sugino
  • CHAIN RING: Dura Ace 42T
  • FREEWHEEL: Shimano 16T
  • SEAT: 3TTT (Techno Tubo Torino) unpadded leather
  • SEAT POST: alloy (cut down to only a 4-inch length)
  • SEAT CLAMP: is actually the end portion of an era correct SR road bike stem. Cut off, sanded down, and smoothed out. Very light.
  • PADS: Stem is DG vinyl. Two others are blue vinyl.
  • DECALS: Head tube is Original. Others are reproduction

I appreciate the great help from: Ben Joy, Rick(Reilley1), Brian(sodbuster), and Lou.

SSAAAWEEETT build Tom!!!!! I remember seeing you post pics of this when you first aquired it, what a basket case she was. Definately a total 360.

OMG! It doesn't get any cooler than that!!!!!!!!!!!

The one time I saw Steve Skibel race he had no seat post, and the seat was clamped to the frame post.

I thought about doing that...but Rick gave me the idea of using an old road stem as a seat clamp. It sounded cool as hell, so I wanted to try it.

Correct me if I am wrong Rick, but didn't your younger brother run his seat without a post as well?
DitchWeed
Cool build.

Always dug the DG's, havent got around to owning one yet!

I like that you went the era-correct mini build on this one....different is always good.

I did the samething as a kid with my CYC Ames frame. It does take a toll on the post though and wouldn't recommend it, but if your Steve S. its not an issue needing a new frame..I did that after seeing Steve's bike. The Ames/pedals ready frame had the taller seat tube that stuck way up and appearently I wanted to be lower.... anyway, awesome build.

You could also find some old bar clamps off a 70's or 80's motox cycle for a seat clamp.

WOW...
Back in 76 or 77 at the Oakdale (Nor-Cal) race car track there was a National...and the DG team was there. If I remeber it right, Stu T was riding one of those and did a pretty aired out Grossi on the final jump in the main..and didn't break the frame. If anybody else remebers that day, tell me if I'm right or wrong.

Awesome build Tom, I look forward to seeing that in Rockford. good2.gif

I still owe you a few beers from when we hung out in the Clocktower parking lot before it started raining last year.
