I was noticeing that frame too. Looks like an R&R. I was a "sloping TT" frame guy. I loved frames like that (R&R, Ames, Skibel, etc)
I still have this Magazine. My Cousin had this subscription back then and he was transitioning from bmx to MX and he gave it to me to read and I still gotz it..

i really used to love the early pattersons.
i was thinking R&R but this photo was before my time.
what about a cheetah? could it be one? almost looks like a modified department stores girls frame

I'm thinking Reilley could answer this question. Shoot, he was probably at the track when they took those photos. Reilley?? I'm going with an R&R. It could be a cheetah. Hard to tell.
Ya, the low Top tube bikes just looked cool. The Avalance was another cool frame. Those had such a long rear half. Probably to keep Richie's front wheel down. I almost bought an Avalanche as a kid. It wasn't a very common frame. I never saw them. Heck after 12-13 Richie didn't even ride it because he grew so much.

Those twin top tubes look too low to be a Cheetah (I have one as a reference) , but I cannot be sure from that photo.
More importantly, in the night racing shot, is that guy wearing rainbow suspenders and baggy high-tides?

From that angle, R&R/Centurion from what I can tell. Or Puch?

is it me or does there appear to be a brace between the two top tubes, directly behind the frame pad.

it just doesnt look r&r to me.
the droputs seem odd as well

It does look like a brace. On the other hand I've never seen a real R&R. Only pics. Back in 75 when I started we never had those around Minnesota in the 70's. we had CYC's, Mongoose, early SE's, Webco'c, Suzuki's, etc. Never seen an R&R, but always a fan.
Tone, how bout minigoose's? Another cool frame

Thanks to Mark Conley for providing this magazine-Mark-I found this in a pile of old loose BMXA covers and stuff from the bulk mag sale days(man that was alot of stuff we sold wasnt it!). Anyway, I am scanning now the next sections-lots of 2 page photos to mend together.
And YEAh, I do believe that guy is riding a welded up and braced girls bike in the indoor jumping photo in queston. WOW, thats old school even for these '77 shots.
However considering these are from a MAy 1977 magazine-these are for sure from the 1976 season in California then. Goin' Wayyy back. I raced a converted Schwinn Stingray in '76-how about you?

Sean, I was thinking it could be a welded up R&R. Its not a girls bike. I still say R&R.

Tone, I would say the 'low slung' frame in question would be an R&R. They were very popular around here back then. I even ran one for a while with some kind of hi-jacker lifts on the rear axles. I am pretty sure the picture is at Corona.
The other picture in question is in fact a modified Schwinn girls bike. Obviously the Schwinns could only take so much abuse, so we would have to replace them, sometimes with whatever was available. The rider on the modified girls bike in that picture is Mel Stoutsenberger(sp), also the same rider as in the next two pictures.

If Rick/Reilley ever checks in, he built a tribute replica white girls Schwinn for Mel this past summer. It turned out great.

Awesome!! LMAO, I knew you'd have something else to add for pics. I was thinking that this era and location has to have a slew of riders on this site. Corona must have been 48/16 bliss...
This IMO is realy bmx. Before the sanctions and all the money stuff. It was a garage sport/bike shop sport to a degree. When the Beetles came to America it sparked mecca interest of guitar and drummers and kids were excited about it.....bmx was allot like that in the 70's.

This was just a local kid at one of our jumping spots. Typical of the era as mentioned above.

I love this shot by Tom Hand of the first straight from behind the start at Corona. That would be Ronnie Aimes and Steve Skiebel, among others, in this shot. In the early days we ran 46X15, all we had were the solid Schwinn type sprockets. Maybe later we would run a 48 with the influx of Takagi and others. That first turn was fun at flat out speeds. (the 1st turn was fun at flat out speed on a sidehack!

Sweet thread. I love these old articles. – Now I'm kicking myself in the head for throwing out all my old mags. I had a Motocross Action or something similar from basically the same era. It featured an article introducing the new sport of BMX. All I remember about it was one picture of an indoor race with wood jumps. The class was 17 X and kid in front was non-other than Stu Thompson.

I had a 75 Scrambler and bolted an "L" bracket to the Schwinn brake bridge so I could run a hand brake. I wanted a hand brake so bad I ran the lever and the cable through the frame pad and that was it.....for a while! Then the fray'n cable started to fray the inside of my leg and Dad said "okay, its time to do it right". LMAO!
