So i just read a blurb in the December Ride that Levi's is going to start giving all of its riders health insurance. ALL of them even the flow team. Pretty damn cool. I think it's about time that Companies start offering this benefit to their teams. Then we would have less of a need for Things like the Stephan Murry, Mike Aitkin, Jimmy Levan, fund.

your thoughts?

That's nice to do. What if the ABA or NBL offered a plan? Of course, they'd have to hire more people to deal with it. Which mightnotwork well for them. It could be costly as well. I dunno.

Wow, this is unexplored territory. So Redline DOESN'T have a plan for thier riders?

I suspect they do. I suspect most teams do. Don't they?

I think this topic not only needs it's own thread, but maybe it's own server farm.

Where to start?

Who has the most vested interest in any one bmxer staying healthy and financially sound? Each individual who chooses to be on the gate.

Our own healthcare is our own responsibility. The ABA and NBL do plenty enough as it is. Anything beyond using the relative massive number of people who race as a barganing chip with a specific carrier to potentially offer optional coverage is the only role they might consider.

I think any smart insurance company would run from us as a group. I have been incapacitated several times because of this sport. The older you get the harder you hit.

I wish I could be 15 again.

That would be the only reason why I could see a sanctioning body involved.

My original thought was more about sponsored riders vs average joes. I think if your being paid to use a brand they should atl east offer you the option of insurance as part of your "deal". I know that the NFL, NBA, NBL teams have insurance why don't Action sports company's do the same?

I don't know if you have ever had to buy health insurance for employees, but it aint cheap. Once BMX gets the NFL and NBA money, they will get insurance too. Hell, BMX can't even get a shoe deal. What do the top pros make anyway? What kind of revenue do they bring in for the sponsors? I would think that folks like Mike Day would have some type of deal with GT or Fly. Big enough companies to extend a costly benifit. I would also like to think that each time my Mike Day handlebars hit the ground and cause me to use my own health insurance, he is covered too.

You'd be surprised. Very few companies offer insurance to their riders.

regardless of where it came from, i can't imagine doing what these guys do without having insurance - whether it's provided or they have to buy it themselves.

when i switched insurance a couple years ago there was a few day period when it was possible i might have been between coverage. i kept off my BMX for that whole week, just to be sure.

ask brian blyther all about his short lapse in coverage fairly recently...
