I purchased a chrome f&f set around 83-84, when I recieved the set the chrome was peeling. I called GJS and they said they would gladly re-chrome it or I can have one in any color I wanted. I chose lavendar, and I believe I may have the only one ever made in this color by GJS. lavendar was not one of their "stock" colors and I believe they did this for me for customer satisfaction.
My question now is, has anyone ever heard or seen another in this color from GJS?

A member here name diamond dean had one painted lavender. Pretty sure it wasn't that way originally. I've only seen them in chrome and white.

I would not restore it and keep it as survivor.

Pauly, where did you get the decal set??
Wouldnt it be more valueable to be restored to NEW condition?
Everything re-chromed, re powder coated etc?

No, it's original only once. NICE original parts commands BIG bucks.
that GJS should never be restored, ever!

Really? Even if that paint is faded and chipped? the chrome worn on the cranks? Wouldnt a restored one be better?

Absolutley not. Just like on the TV antique shows. Original finish is always far better.
Especially since you still have og decals they are just some much cooler than repro's even worn and raggedy.

It's yer bike, do what ever you want..it will just make every original GJS that much more valuable...nothing like over restored show bikes..YAY!

I agree, the original finish means a lot of things to a lot of people but THE biggest reason for me...
There is nothing left to speculation as to the original condition of the frame / fork. New powder always makes me suspicious, but that may just be my cynicism.
You will ALWAYS get more for original finish.
BTW - Pauly has a big brain - he remembers everything!

If you have plans on selling it you may want to leave it original.
However, you have had it along time and it seems like you plan on keeping it forever.
If thats the case, do what you want. If I where in your shoes I would restore it to capture its glory days.
Using all the proper dated parts and NOTHING from a the wrong time period.
Nothing better than having a 25 year old bike sitting in your house looking brand new.
I personally would rather stare at a bike in that condition than a beat up "survivor"
my 2 cents

^^^^^Agreed.
I have never been a "Survivor guy" I just don't like the look of a used bike. I like them to look brand new regardless of how it affected the value. Do with it as you wish!

from someone who has had both restored bikes and survivor bikes, i say keep it as a survivor.
but at looking at some of your posts, you seem to be interested in the value of it, maybe you are just interested to re-sell it?, and thats why you want to "restore" it. well, depending on who you re-sell it to will determine how you will get more for it.
i have seen survivors in a lot worse shape than that and they are still incredible bikes.
but it is yours, so do what you want with it, just be sure whatever you do is what you really want to do and are going to be happy with it that way in the future.

If the bike is of time capsule quality, meaning ridden a few times and in amazing cond., then leave it. If all the scratches mean something to you then leave it. If you can live with rust and shabby looking old parts to match the cond. of the frame, then leave it.
If you look at it and wish it looked like it did when you first got it......restore it!
Some "survivor" are just old used/used up bikes that should be restored. Some guys take the "survivor" thing way to literally!!

I dont ever plan on selling it, I just thought have a NEW restored 25 year old bike would be worth more.
Like some have said I personally would just rather have a new looking bike that something that looks old. I will probably just leave it as is for a while anyway.
I would still like to get a decal set and know if it was the only lavendar one made.

Brutus,
That's a nice color and would you mind measuring the fork pegs for me?
Here's the thing and as previously mentioned, people take the "keep bikes original" mantra way too strongly. If it was a pro's original bike, a time machine piece with shelf wear, or prototype than I would keep it original. You may want to contact JU himself as he had a decent amount of those freestyle decals available at one time.
New decals, new paint, fresh chrome and it will bring back the mid 80's before you know it. In my experience with exotic freestylers, perfectly restored rarities commanded the big dollars. If you don't believe me, a few guys telling you to restore it are also the same guys who deal/purchase/sell bikes in the $6,000-$12,000 range. Food for thought.

i normally would be in the "do with it what you want, its your bike" group, but honestly, if thats a one of a kind , original paint bike, LEAVE IT AS IS ! I say that because if its refinished, it could have been any color before and it wouldnt matter. i could strip a chrome bike, repaint it and color match it to yours, and then who has what ? prove mine is any different than yours. however of its original paint and decals, it has what everyone wants : provenance. literal proof of its originality, and thus its value for being a rarity. rebuild it, and redo everything else, that f/f looks pretty nice still. i have done the same with an original paint/decal candy red redline and it still looks great with all the shiny new parts, and a few "character scratches" . good luck, craig.

Who is JU, and how do I contach him?
I can measure them, do you just want to know how far out they stick? Like if you were to stand on the pegs how much room there would be?

JU is the J in GJS. Jeff Utterback. He's also a member on the site here.
(He's joking about measuring the pegs.)

Actually, I'm being serious about the pegs. Judging by the design of his frame, he may have the longer/rarer freestyle fork.
