Okay, maybe I'm missing something here, but why would you strip a mint, flawless, NOS frame, to repowder it the same color?
Looks really nice though. I prefer those decals too. What other parts/colors you got planned?

I don't believe it was NOS before stripping, but it certainly was mint.
Maybe he was going for perfection?
Personally I would have built it as is, but that is just my opinion. He certainly did it right by sending it to C4. It is stunning.

I don't understand the repaint either. As always great work by Chip, but he was probably scratchin' his head as well.

Very pretty. I like the '85 stickers better, too. Can't wait to see how you build it up.

???
Call me dumbfounded as well. Why not pick up a rusty beat old frameset that needs restoration and do that one instead?
These frames are plentiful and cheap.

I get the feeling that SAF is pulling our collective legs in one way or another.

the "before" photo doesn't look mint to me - mint means unblemeished - there are chips and scratches all over it

That's correct. When I say the original was mint, I meant the frame itself, not the paint, which did have some chips though not many. The original frame was in excellent condition, and the metal underneath the paint was flawless - no washer marks at all, and the seat mast looks like it never had a clamp on it. I wanted a Performer that I could use as a basis for a perfect restore, and this was it. No rust, no blemishes on the metal whatsoever. Usually a frame that has bad paint has other issues with the metal underneath. I wanted something as close to perfect to start with as possible and this was it.
