i've ALWAYS wanted an RL20II and hope to build one in the coming year. however searching around i havent come up with much info on how much i can expect to be putting into it. i've seen nice RL20IIs completely built on ebay for around $800...but then i've also seen rusted out, dented frame / fork sets go for over $500. craigslist is useless. i would just like to get an idea of what i am getting myself into.

What RL is it? 85, 85, 87, 88?

Do you need forklifter bars / stem? That gets expensive, especially if you go for NOS gear. Then there's the post, the brakes, the wheels - it all adds up.

The question is how much do you want to spend.
BOB-O
1000.00 plus
shawn o
I'd say more like $2000 to do it properly.
Nighthawk
Frame & fork - varies wildly on condition; anywhere from $250 for a beater to $500+ for mint. $125-150 for forklifter freestyle bars. Nice set of Peregrines $150-200. So yeah, to do it right you're looking at $1,500+ easy for the whole deal. .
Hudson
going show quality, you'll probably hit 1500-2K

Going medium quality probably 1000.

thanks for the help guys. i know i definitely don't want something so nice that i'll be worried about riding and damaging, so NOS is definitely out. just want to make my kiddie dreams come to fruition with a bike that i can ride and put some good use into. and the forklifter bars are going to be a must! smile.gif
RIDE A BIKE

I think a good rule of thumb on a 20 II in the current market is about double what it would cost bitd...so yea, 1500- 2k to do it era correct with good cond- good parts.

Probably do one under a G if you didnt go with 401s and Forklifters...88 frames seem to bring a little less than the earlier frames, and are cooler imo because of the 990 mounts, so you might save a few bucks going that rout too...

I saved some cash when I built mine a couple of years back by running Flight 2 cranks, KHE pedals, and Kenda tires...still had the look and feel I wanted, but I didnt have to worry about messing up some old 401s, MKS grafites, or Panaracers....

Were are all the RLs ?? I never see'em for sale or on evilbay anymore....it's like once a dude gets an RL he dont ever want to let it go....although ebay usually got a 1/2 dozen or more Trick Stars for sale....... sarcastic.gif

just to reiterate the point, everybody so far is right on the money. I too wanted an RL 20II, and scooped up an 88 a while back. It's almost done 86 style, and I'm coming in right around $14-1500

I'd have to agree with everyone so far. I am trying to post a pic of my RL20II frame and fork, but can't seem to make it work. Anyway, maybe I'm just not as dedicated, but I can't bring myself to pay as much for the forklifter bars as I did for the frame and forks. I might try to go with the racing forklifter bars, much cheaper and seem to pop up more.

everyone is correct here, all depends on how your building it.. it could cost over 3k going all out nuthing but the best show quality could go well over that, all depends what you get and if its a deal of if you pay out the ear for it..

This thread demonstrates exactly why I never tally up all the money I've spent on builds. It would get way too depressing. I just buy parts when I see a good deal and hold on to them in case I need them in the future. This has paid off time and time again... the reverse kills me too. I sell stuff off thinking I'd never use it then BAM! I find the perfiect fit for the part I sold a year ago.

Word. Build it your way....just like Burger King. My RL20II came with a slant ACS stem....I may use it....I may not. It's all up to you and your taste.
Pauly
Here's how I rode mine bitd....

Dyno bars
ACS 55 stem/pro rotor
peregrine brakes and CD chainwheel
GT clamp/post/seat
chrome plated araya 7x rims
comp st up front with more aggressive GT in the rear for off road traction.
Tioga crazy chain
GT steel tube rides welded to 24t Coasterbrake axles in place of the skinny redline pegs.

Note that the only parts that are redline are the f/f. lol.

That is beautiful!!! I know it's rude to ask, but I just have to...how much does it cost to gold plate a bike?
