COASTY
More to the point waza, why are you up at 3 in the morning? LOL
Some nice survivors in here too.
waza007
It was actually 4pm here Coasty.... LOL

I was trawling the bay... looking for mongoose serial numbers......... biggrin.gif
mongoosedrummer
Hey Waz, not quite sure where to post some of this info. but seeing as how this is your last thread I know of, I figured this is the place. smile.gif

First off, I now own another '76 long OG Nickel Mongoose to add to your serial # reference chart: CG6 22201

It's off the hook mint... Another "powder puff"! cool.gif OG finish, OG declas, with mint OG Preston Petty grips, Simi MM1's etc... Really sweet. You'll love it...

Secondly, there are a couple small additions/corrections to the www.vintagemongoose.com site you might want to add...

Under the serial # page it states:

"The '75 coaster brake tab also has thicker...etc." You might want to change that to "the early '75 coaster brake tab..." Because it did change within the first year.

Also the caption that reads: "Please note the Supergoose is just a chrome plated Team frame" Should be changed to "just a chrome plated or Nickel plated Team frame"...etc.

Here's some more anomalies to consider... BTW, I have no idea how to fully clarify all these strange differences in the Team frame information. blink.gif

A Team Frame with no extra holes on the brake bridge:

Here's one that appears to be a Team (w/extra brake bridge holes) but with no "T" in the serial #:

Obviously, it's no perfect science. So many crazy Mongoose mysteries... Anyhow, hope that helps bro. smile.gif

I had the serial # listed but have now added your name as the owner

Updated, thanks for that

Not quite, Ive edited the text to clarify

A Team Frame with no extra holes on the brake bridge:
QUOTE - "These extra holes were only on the full cromo frames that had the "step down" type dropouts."

Here's one that appears to be a Team (w/extra brake bridge holes) but with no "T" in the serial #:
QUOTE - "Also of note is the "T" (for team), was also dropped. When they dropped the "C", it was realised that there was no need for it, as there were other ways to ID a team/supergoose (full cromo) frame."

Ive noticed there was a few "crazy" months around April, May and June in 1981, when there was mix of old and new dropouts being used. So there is actually a month or more where there was a "team/supergoose" frame that had NO "T" in serial but was "old style" dropouts....

thanks for the updates!!
mongoosedrummer
Cool bro. wink.gif

So much insane Mongoose minutiae, I don't envy you having to compile and update all this information... Kudos for doing so. Everyone benefits from your hard work.

Obviously the Teams and Supergooses are both full Chrome Moly, but in terms of the old caption that read: "Please note the Supergoose is just a chrome plated Team frame"... As I think you know already, I have a survivor 1979 Supergoose that is Nickel plated with the flattened seat stay on the right. Not sure what that means in terms of histrionics or documentation. I believe the OG '79-'80 catalogue clarifies this as well. I'm thinking you may want to correct/point that out in the serial # page...

BTW, in case you didn't see this, I made a silly new video while practicing with some movie capabilities on my Mac. Skip has seen it and digs it...

Lot's of OS Mongoose highlights for your entertainment! Enjoy... smile.gif : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tYt-0AwE_g

Does your 79 nickel Team/Supergoose frame have original decals? I have seen the lit on a nickel Supergoose, but I didn’t think that actually made it. It was always my understanding that the 78-80 Team bikes were nickel frames painted with candy paint and the Supergoose was the chrome version of that bike.

I know allot of kids stripped the paint off their Team bikes and replaced the decals within a year of having them because it scratched and peeled so easy. My local bike shop owner talked me out of buying a Team frame for that same reason.

It's an `83 looptail with early `90's decals.

Hi folks - I don't post on here very often as i spend most of my time on RADBMX.CO.UK but i'm lovin this thread - so here is my flock biggrin.gif

1978 Short Nickel--------- CG8 88267 ----- BB
1979 Nickel Minigoose---- CG9 187404 ---- BB
1979 Team / Super------- TCL9 262289 --- BB
1980 Supergoose 1------- T-CB0 285265 -- BB
1980 Nickel Mongoose---- CJ0 346981 ---- BB
1981 Nickel Minigoose---- CA1 386221 ---- BB

1981 Mongoose------------ G142807 ------- BB
1982 Mongoose------------ A2000664 ------ Gusset
1982 Supergoose 2-------- I2005208 ------ Gusset
1982 Supergoose 2-------- L2001896 ------ Gusset

1983 USA Supergoose 3--- G3002777 ------ Gusset
1984 Californian------------ M4J19061 ------ BB
1984 Californian------------ M4J19069 ------ BB
1984 Blue Max-------------- M4-I6865 ------ BB

Top group are early dropout style, second group are the super dropout (with the holes) and last group is the gusset-less cali shaped era. I've added where the serial is stamped. Nothing too strange about any of my nos. i don't think, but i was pleasantly suprised to see a difference of only 8 numbers between my two 84 californians ! Especially since i bought one from a guy who owned it from new over here in the UK and shipped the other in from the states after winning it on ebay !

I've put the serials as they are stamped I.E. if it has a hyphen or space between characters on the frame then it shows it above.

NOTE 1 : The 79 team/super in the list i can't distinguish if it is a team or super as it had been powdercoated yellow before i bought it (and it's a nice finish so i ain't stripping it off !) I've looked for tell tale signs i.e. overspray of red or blue candy in the seat tube, BB and head tube but nothing there huh.gif

NOTE 2 : Can anyone confirm when the short frames stopped getting made as mine above is CG8 but i read somewhere that they stopped the shorties late 77 - obviously that can't be right because i have 78 in front of me !!

Note 3 : As far as i am concerned my supergoose 1 1980 is chrome not nickel and it is definitely the original finish with original decals so is this around the time they dropped nickel on the supergoose 1 and moved over to chrome ?

Sorry for rambling on guys !

John (bobafettuk) good2.gif

Wow, nice collection John! ohmy.gif

I think you are right about your observations as well. I think '79 was the last/only year for the Nickel Supergoose, that's one reason I really cherish mine...

Also I've never seen any short Geese frames after '78 so what you said about that makes sense as well. I may be wrong (so many oddities in the Mongoose history) but you seem to be right on track IMO.

It's nice to have the details to go with serial #'s as that will obviously help determine exactly when these changes began and when they were phased out.

Again, great collection you have and great observations/information. good2.gif
bobafettuk
Thanks mongoosedrummer - I thought my collection was getting out of hand.... until i saw yours good2.gif

Do you just collect the frames or do you build / ride any ?
I plan to build all of mine - got 3 done at the moment which are just for show and 2 almost built which i will ride. The rest of them i have most of the bits to build 'em but there is some restoration work to be done on a few and some need powdering rolleyes.gif

I'm going off topic here so i'll shut up biggrin.gif

A quick question on reco though - on vintagemongoose waza says reco built the frames for the first 3 years which puts my 78 shorty at the end of that era - just wondering from my serial if you think it is a reco build ? I might get a repop reco sticker for it to finish it off huh.gif
mongoosedrummer
The whole RECO thing is being looked into further as far as I know... I'll let Waz comment on that question. Personally, I'm still gathering information on it to hopefully contribute some more data.

Glad you asked about if I was only collecting frames... Gives me another chance to show off a couple of my bikes again! Ha! laugh.gif

I've built up many Geese but my two favorites (in terms of showing) are my original Nickel '75 and my one of a kind "Copper Goose". I ride them both also. There are threads here on both of them.

I like to be able to ride everything I build, it's my own little personal philosophy for collecting. I understand those who don't. It's a personal choice.

My absolute favorite riders are my '79 Nickel Supergoose and a '76 Redline Squareback with Webco mags that I have.

Here's my original Nickel '75 Goose and my one of a kind "Copper Goose":

bobafettuk
Seeing that 75 has just reminded me..... i still need some clear grips sad.gif

Lovin that 75 - and you weren't kiddin when you said one of a kind with the copper one ohmy.gif
mongoosedrummer
Shoot me a PM. wink.gif

These are getting nearly impossible to find...

waza007
As for the Reco part. heres a quote from the company history page on our webite.

"RECO (Racer Engineering Company) was a wholly owned manufacturing division created for insurance purposes to be separate from BMX Products, Inc, even though RECO was always in house"

spike
I have what seems to be a 1981 Mongoose frame #D107693. Dunno what I'm gonna do with it, I guess I'll build it up as a beater but it ain't what I'm into cause I don't dig BMX stuff after 1977/78. The black frame is in pretty bad shape visually.
