I hear Cables suck and chains are heavy so is the U-lock the only why to go??? What about the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit U-lock... What should I get to lock my bike up with in downtown Austin where everyone rides a bike and there are bike thief's on every corner or bums...

I live in Miami Beach. Lots of bums, and bike thieves all over as well. We don't always have a bike rack to lock up to. So, I bought one of each of the NY Fahgettaboudits. The chain we bring when we're going to be locking up more than one bike, and/or we're going to lock it up to a tree or something. The chain lock is very heavy. I keep it in a camel pack when I ride. It's not that bad while just cruising. The u-lock works with one bike to a bike rack. That's what my son takes with him to school when he rides his bike. If you have any questions about the locks, I'll try to answer them.

I have the Fuggetaboutit U-lock and it seems pretty stout but it's heavy and cumbersome so I got a set of the Master Lock Street Cuffs because they will fit better in a small backpack etc... I use a Kryptonite cable lock if I'm not letting the bike out of my sight (ie. getting a drink at 7-11) someplace where I can see if someone is getting close to it or not.

I won't leave one of my favorite bikes locked outside... If I think I'll be in a situation that requires locking the bike I'll take a beater.

i have both sizes of the kryptonite evolution and i think a cable came with one of them or maybe i bought that after but some combo of all that is what i use. depends on the situation and what i am riding.

When I have had to lock my bike up I have used multiple locks. A U-Lock, and 2 cable locks. Kind of a PITA, but I have never had a bike stolen that was locked up.

the u lock has always worked best for me

I also should add that I used a Walmart U-Lock (Bell?) to lock a bike up that was being stored with my ex in-laws. They kept it under a patio but it was exposed to the harsh Arizona winter (that's a joke guys). Anyhow, it had been there about 3 years so I brought it home and figured that I'd come up with something to get it off. Ended up just whacking it with a 3lb hammer and it took about 5 hit before the lock came apart.

Someone claimed you could pour freon over a U-Lock and shatter them with a hammer. I don't know about that. The Bic pen cap trick did work on old ones.

One legend claims Tommy Brackens can look at a U-Lock and it will fall apart.
