OK, so back in the day I always wanted a Redline but couldn't afford one. Recently I have gotten back into the BMX/Freestyle hobby and am having a blast collecting things I always wanted (as soon as I get back from Iraq, I will post pics of all my bikes). I also recently bought about 3 RL-20IIs. I plan on restoring as a custom rider my chrome 1988 RL-20II. It currently doesn't have a sticker pack on it, and I am torn between the orignal or an olderversion (always loved R.L Osborne's chrome redline). So here's the questions:
1) Does anybody have a good spec web site for what equipment came on what year of redline's?
2) If not, what were the 88 specs?
3) I've always dug 2Fresh Timmo's bikes because the are original to him over NOS...what (component for component) would you use to build up this bike for straight up old school coolness and funtionality (price not being an object)?
4) I'm a sucka for all chrome, but I wanna hear about other year sticker packs, color combos, and even if you would paint it (like an old school Radberry, Teal, or RL Hazard Yello with chrome). I'm even open to other bike color/chrome combos, or a custom color.e
Peace,

Brian P just finished his new chrome rider a short while ago and put a real old sticker pack on it.
Check it out here:
http://www.vintagebmx.com/community/index....wtopic=27020155I'm working on one now too which will be a custom color job for an RL 20-II. The hazard yellow is the Redline color, but I'm going with blue instead of the lavender which is normally in the stickers (It's normally lav in the stickers where I have the blue squares) Everything else will be a stock color part, although I may dye a white seat that I have to make it blue like the mags I have for it.
This is it so far, but I have some blue mags now too.

So that's just a couple examples of making it however you want. As for parts for yours, Peregrine chrome super pro HP-48's would be killer for it. Also Redline forklifter freestyle bars, I wouldn't go with a forklifter stem though. I just don't think it would be strong enough for a rider. They look cool, but that's up to you. I personally like Hutch stems, Pro neck, or Tuf Necks. Definitely Redline 401 single-pinch flight cranks (I'm using a little newer double pinch), Dia-Compe Nippon brakes would be cool for the front, 990's in the back if it's an 88. Well there's a few suggestions anyway. I've got a bunch of Tuf neck/Pro Neck parts on mine, stem, disc/chainwheel, seat clamp. I'm looking for a Tuf Neck seat post too, then I think that's about all I can get on there of that stuff. I think chrome/red/black would be pretty cool to go with as far as colors. I always liked the turquoise on Redlines too. With it sitting there all chrome right now, you pretty much have any option you want, which is REALLY cool. You can hopefully get some good suggestions here, piece together what you like best out of them, and it's all there for the making. Bet you can't wait to come home now with 3 RL 20-II's waiting for you.
(Thanks for that chainwheel Brian P!!!!!!!)

RL's chrome 86 RL20II actually had an 85 Hazard Yellow sticker set on it. The chrome RL20II's were sold with the same decals that came on the white frames(with the red lettering) but as everyone knows RL always did something a bit different. I like the Hazard Yellow decals better on the chrome frame myself as opposed to the stock set with the red lettering.
Here are 2 pictures of RL's chrome RL20II.

It's cool seeing those 2 pix that even RL didn't like to use those tiny stock pegs.

Enough with the Napolean Dynamite reference to that picture! That's the third time I've seen that mentioned this year. lol.
Honestly if it's going to be a rider the only other redline component I would go with would be flight cranks. Build it nice and comfortable. Skip the forklifter stem and bars. Also, bend the tabs on a gyro and run that instead of a rotor. Try to keep it low in front. Peregrine Q-Bars and a tuff neck would be a nice combo. Chrome double walled 48s would be killer. Super pros or Araya Super 7x.
If I had a spare 20II to build as a rider that's the route I would go anyway. Can't wait to see it built up!

I agree on bending a gyro to fit over the 2x top tube. I had that exact bike and thats what I did. I kept the forklifter stem an didnt have any probs with it. I ran it inserted all the way into the fork right on top of the headset. For a 88 it was the six bolt forklifter. Also i ended up runing normal axel pegs in front.

You guys are great…for the support and the references.
So here’s the deal. I still am unsure how I want to build this up. I have a small inkling to go half frame painted but if I did it would be a custom color (metal flake Radberry?), but I’m about 95% sure that I will just go OG Chrome on the frame and fork. The next question is about the decals. I am torn between the ones I love…the 85 Hazard Yellow pack with Lavender Square, the 87 Neon Yellow Square with pink REDLINE, or the 88 Neon Pink Redline with zebra stripe. All in all, I think the 85 pack is more in line of what I want it to look like because I’m not a purist about this. I just want something that looks sweet and is functional (that’s why I am mulling getting 86 fold up Haro pegs, like R.L. Osborne used to run). So here’s a break down of what I think I wanna do. I still would greatly appreciate suggestions.
Frame: 88 Chrome Redline RL20II
Fork: 88 Chrome Redline RL20II (with 86 Haro fold-up pegs).
Heatset: Hatta (still need)
Stem: Either ACS 55 slant painted lavender, purple, pink, or blue to match. Or Chrome Hutch stem (that I’d prefer to save for my Trickstar when I restore it. Possibly even a GT mallet stem, especially because of the colors.
Handle Bars: I have a set of Chrome CW dual cross bars that are on my 84 California Freestyle that I could use, because I loved those BITD, but I am leaning toward Redline bars, Peregrine Q-bars, Hutch Woody bars (because I had a lavender set I LOVED), or a set of new school bars. I’m just afraid the old school bars will have too much of a rake, and afraid the new school will be too narrow. Still considering the RL bars heavily, but the set I have are painted teal to go with that bike, so I’d have to get some.
Grips: Probably new school colored.
Brakes: Obviously Dia=Comp 990’s rear, and Nippon front, right? Well actually, I am considering Fly Pink 990’s rear, and either Nippons, or a 990 plate and the same Fly’s up front.
Brake Lever: Dia-Compe Tech 77 Locking Lever. I’m thinking about having whatever pair I buy painted to be purple or pink.
Brake Pads: Whatever works.
Crank: Gotta go Redline Flights right? But do I go old-old-school wrap arounds? Or single bolt pinch, or even new school 2 bolt pinch?
Bottem Bracket: Suggestions?
Sprocket: I have a RL Flight wheel (44T). Probably gonna run that, or get a 42T one, or get a 42t CD.
Pedals: Torn between Shimano PD-MX-15’s I already have, Graphite’s I already
have, or new school plastics I would have to buy (to save my shins).
Wheels: Chrome Peregrine Super Pro HP-48’s (already have them).
Tires: Totally open to suggestions. Was thinking either Primo, or the Odyssey
RL EDGE replicas.
Roter: I loved my ACS Pro Rotor, but those are hard to come by, and not sure if they are that useful. Can I piece together a new school Gyro to work this, or should I opt for the old school?
This is gonna take some time. I will be back on leave to the US in March, but not sure how much time I will even have. So based on this, (and all the great support from you guys already), what are your suggestions?
BTW: I'm sorry that this isn't formatted correctly...It was when I typed it, but it lost something in translation.
Peace,

If you are building it to ride then put on the parts you like. A Gyro will allow you to have the bars lower but will need some modification. I personally like Forklifter bars on a Redline but here is a picture from AJK Bikes site of a chrome RL20II with Peregrine bars, I believe?! This bike looks so clean with all the chrome and the chrome Super Pros. I kind of like these bars that are on it.
The 85 decals are a good choice for your 88.

Here is what is going to be my rider, a Cali Red RL20. I like the simple design and they are very light. I'm going with chrome Forklifter bars and chrome Super Pros.

Another alternative to the gyro would be to run a rotor with an ACS 55 slanted stem if you can find one. That keeps the level of the bars down almost to gyro level. I know a few people didn't like those stems, and that people would break them, but I never had a problem with mine BITD.

They are probably axlepegs. That's what I used bitd. Cut up 24T axles & pegs.

They are axle pegs RL used. I have an article scanned from BMX Plus that has the set ups of the Pros bikes and RL explains that they are axle pegs. I'll post it here later tonight.

Heya B $oLo,
I have recently re-awakened the BMX beast inside also (or as my wife likes to call it my 'Mid-Life Crisis'), I am constantly looking for that RL-20II that appears in my dreams now, as it did say fifteen years ago. Are these just as hard to come by in your part of the world as they are here (Sydney, Australia)? Anybody you know who might have one up for sale. Cheers man S

A little hard, and definitley pricey. I actually have an 88 Black and Grey RL II that I am pretty sure I will be willing to part with. I can't tell you much about it yet, as I bought it off ebay a few months ago, and I haven't been home to see it yet. I'll post more about it when I go home for a visit in March.
