They were chrome or white. this comes from a productions manager of REDLINE

Yea, white was an option in the years when white became the new chrome.

You sure you're not talking about the PL20, rather than the Carrera?
I can recall this argument raging ever since I got into the hobby. Every time it concludes with the fact that chrome was the only option for the Carrera. The only exception is Stu's bike, I think.
Be good to get comment from someone at Redline, to put this to bed permanently.

Well, Ill be the first to admit I could be wrong. I remember a lot of white Redlines in ads, but they very well could have been other models. In fact, after looking over on the redline history site, I am probably thinking of a 700.

I think this is a common thing - Redline did plenty of white frames, just not for the Carrera, which was chrome only, as I understand things.

Isnt that a cruiser?
Also, the decals are from 84 - the Carrera was on sale between 81 - 82. There was a Carrera II which was on sale between 83 to early 84.

This bike at the top of the thread was correctly ID'd as a 81 PL-20 Carrera and the decals are reproductions for this bike. The say PL-20 Carrera and the serial # matches. It has a 6 number serial # and an oval stamp with REDLINE in the oval-just below the serial #) Thats all I know and I may rebuild it or I may sell it. These are the undisputed facts of the case!

Carrera's dont come in white, mate. Only one did, and it was Stu's bike.
I think yours is a PL20, which is not a step down at all. Still very collectible.

I guess the guy that worked for REDLINE (building and designing bikes) was wrong. I never trusted those Redline guys anyway. But I trust you! Thanks for the heads up on this.

Carrera was the name of the bike, not the frame and fork. How to tell if a frame and fork are from a Carrera bike: the rear dropouts were brazed on instead of welded.

They were only chrome and I think i recall reading that some had brazed F&F dropouts and some were welded depending on when made and was not Carrera specific.

Dont take it so seriously. I dont. Its only a discussion. Wind your neck in.
Besides anything else, I am only aware of chrome Carrera's, as Ben said. They simply didnt come in white.

I was kidding...I have been told its a Proline and from someone @ Redline its a Carrera. Either way Im selling it and hopefully someone will build a nice ride and they can call it whatever they want. I hope to get 500 out of it. I will try the old school sites and then on to ebay. Fun talking to ya thanks for your insight.

No worries - all the best with your sale. PL20's are cool, maybe not 500's worth of cool, but cool none the less.

I am not trying to add fuel to the fire but if you look on BMXMUSEUM's gallery
all the PL-20 Carrera's are chrome. it looks like ALL Carrera's from '81-'85 were all chrome, none in white. sorry but unless it was Stu's factory bike it should be chrome.

It's your frame, paint it pink if ya want! In the end, if you are happy, that's all that matters!

At the end of the day, after all is said and done, that is really all that matters.
But for history - chrome only. Thats how they were made. What you do with yours is completely up to you.
