I've got a '77 frame, and over to one side of the BB there's a six-pointed star stamped to the same depth and apparent age as the serial number located just to the left of the serial number. I can't recall seeing one on any other frame I've had or come across online, and was wondering if any of you might know the significance (if any) of that stamped star. Thanks...

I'm no expert, but my take on it is: It was most likely a personal ID ingraving someone did after they had the bike. I know that frame and I've looked at the pics too... I was also curious about that little star as well. I thought it looked really cool. wink.gif Plus, it's a very nice clean 77!!!

What I found interesting was that the "star" was done very well and looked like it may even have been done at the factory... Again, I don't know for sure but, it won't be long until the experts around here should give you a better take on this little celestial Mongoose mystery... Good luck! smile.gif

And yes, it appears to me that the star was stamped professionally, perhaps in the manufacturing process at some point. I just can't seem to find any information on what significance it has.

A Jewish Mongoose?

You got me. It definately wasn't scribed into the metal, it's a clear, distinct stamping only slightly less deep and wide as the serial number.

It's listed on Ebay if anyone is in the market for a Jewish Mongoose...

That star means it's Kosher.

It may not actually be a "Star of David"... It could be the "Creator's Star" or "Star of Creation". Its six points stand for the six days of creation, and also represent the six attributes of God: power, wisdom, majesty, love, mercy and justice.

The basic six-point hexagram, while generally recognized as a symbol of Jewish identity, is used also in many other historical, religious and cultural contexts, for example in Islam, Christianity and Eastern Religions as well as in Occultism (Black Magic Mongoose?). It's symbolic and decorative use can be traced as far back as ancient Egypt during the reign of the Pharos.

It could be the much less chronicled and far more enigmatic "Hess Star" of Chatsworth... A symbolic mystical symbol so deeply shrouded in mystery that only Rick Twomey knows it's true relevance.

It may also have been, just a cool little engraving stamp that some kid (or his Dad) used to identify his BMX bike back in the 70's... wink.gif

maybe it was a frame for a factory rider,,,and he was jewish

This little Hexagram star thing is quite interesting... Perhaps resident Mongoose expert Waza can get to the bottom of this one.

If you check out Waza's website www.vintagemongoose.com it actually appears again...

Under the page which explains serial numbers, you will see a picture of the underside of a bottom bracket from a Team frame with the serial # CI7 48484 "T". Look closely at the top of the picture, and there it is again, the Hexagram star!

The one mentioned here from Ebay is a July 77 and the one on Waza's site is a September 77. There were 5441 frames made between them. I doubt it would have been a special factory run for one person. Or maybe it was... One regular and one Team both with that star? Maybe there was a few made for one particular important person. A sponsored rider maybe? Wouldn't their frames have only been "Team" then?

For sure we now know one thing, it wasn't a "one-off" personal stamp from one owner's bike. It certainly appears to be an "In-House" Factory stamp.

Maybe the original owner had stamped them both himself, but unless one of his frames ended up with the guy selling on Ebay and his other one somehow ended up in Waza's possession down in Australia 31 years later... Well, I doubt it.

Another Mongoose mystery to be figured out... scratch_one-s_head.gif Waza?
