Full Version: What's all this about chains?

The Red Baron
I posted this picture on another thread and was asked questions about the chains.

In the 2nd issue of BMX Action we were interviewed by Oz. He asked about the chains, being the good (great) journalist he was/is, he wanted to make them out as a scare tactic. That was never the intention.

My favorite track BITD was Corona and that is where we spent most of our track time racing and riding. The 3rd turn was a right hand hairpin berm. We would go into it so fast that as we slid into the berm part of the turn, we would actually roll the bike tires off the Mags.

To fix the problem I would let the air out of the tires, wrap chains around the tire and mag, then when I inflate the tire it would tighten up under the chain. No more tire roll.

I'll see if I can dig up a picture of that turn later. For now, here is a picture in the first turn at Corona. This is a left sweeper at full speed and look at how agressive it is on the tires.

You must have been hauling to roll tires off the wheels! Cool idea with the chains and it worked too! Just wondering with the hack coming off the frame from behind the headtube, did it ever get in the way of your knee when pedaling?

Super cool story and technique...very DIY.

What a cool story man. I appreciate you sharing it, Im just fascinated by hacks as I never seen one in action in my life.

DD,
That's a cool way of keeping that tire wrapped and under control....is there anyway you can secure a collectors belly from flopping over there belt buckle? smile.gif
Darrin Stout.

Cool...the BMX equivalent of bead locks.

Thanks Dennis!

Part of the 'tire roll' was speed and part was just the way we went into the turn. Remember, you can't lean the bike over while cornering on a hack. So we would enter that turn 'upright' and at speed. We would already be sliding on entry to the turn, then when we hit the transition to the berm is where we would roll the tire off the rim.

Actually there is plenty of room for the pedal stroke and I even ran 7 1/2" Astabula cranks.

Back in the day it was quite a site to see a whole gate of hacks charging into a first turn. I rarely got to see it because I was out front. smile.gif
While this video clip is not a race, it is pretty cool. This is the place where Reilley and I went to 'practice'.

It's called a "bro-sierre"

On a related chain thing, just for fun, we put some cheese imitation tuff wheel on the hack and hit Rancho's first turn at warp 2 a few times. Eventually the wheel blew into a few pieces.

I love the smell of shredded plastic in the morning...

O.K. Rick..then what's it called when a Rockford-T-Shirt rides up over an over-exposed collectors belly...A "Holeshot"? smile.gif

Baron I cant get that link to work, can you just give the address?
The Red Baron
I don't know what it is about that link. I am working on it. How about another picture to tide you over until I fix the video.

This is another picture from the interview in BMX Action. This is one of my favorites.

You can see Steve using another one of our 'creations'. My fabricator created a looped nurf bar for around the rear wheel and on the left side he put another loop extension for the monkey to stand on. It was designed specificly for the first turn (pictured) at Corona, it was a long, fast, left sweeper.
