raced into the late 80's...went to a pro road race and that was it....did the road thing with 'cross and Mtb thrown in for almost 20yrs....my kid got me back into BMX last year and am loving every minute of it.....plus alot less training then road and 'cross!!!

Broken leg 3 weeks before the Grands in a year where I finally had the races to go - 84/85. I than also discovered cars, girls, and after the indoor tracks shut down here I was bummed about having nothing to do all winter. 86 rolled around and after 1 winter of not riding I was done with BMX.

Purely Financial reasons. I loved racing but couldnt afford it. At least I still have the bike I raced and some really fond memories to go along with it.

I won the state championship in my class in '84 and quit racing after that, going out on a high note.
While I continued riding flatland freestyle and a little ramp until '86, my interests were shifting towards music, music and music...and moving to Los Angeles to purse a career in, what else, music.
Looking back on it all, it was a good move.

Quit the first time because I started playing bass and then got my car drivers license in 1983 or so... got back into it in 1988 because same car threw a rod and I started riding to school which got me into street riding... quit again in 1991 when I got my next car... got back into it in 2000 when I saw a bright red John Purse cruiser in the window of a local bike shop...

I now collect and build bikes. Also started Freeriding and mountain biking... and am back into BMX racing...

I'm not quitting again. Even if I get to a point where I can no longer ride, I will still own and maintain bikes.

My last summer racing was right before my freshman year. Raced all summer, gained the usual pizza elbows and knees and then went straight into summer 2 a days for football. I quickly learned that if you went into football season all scabbed up, you don't heal up until after the season. Football became my sport of choice and the bike was put away. It was a good move. I was much better at football than I ever was on a bike - even got to play a little in college.

I raced at Palms Park for many years. They used to have a 10 week season. After ten weeks they would give out the trophies. I won that trophy for four seasons in a row!! I was on top of the world.

At the end of the forth season my dad passed away. I was devastated to say the least. It was very hard to get back into it. I raced here and there but it was never the same......

..sorry...

quite because of burn out

raced for 4yrs and did it year round, never took months off at a time. Looking back I should have treated it as any other sport, as a season. If I raced maybe 5mo year, instead of year around, I probably would have raced a lot longer.

my first son is 4.5, just got his mini and he's pumped to race. I'm going to treat it as any other season, 4mo on and take a few off in hopes of avoiding burning him out.

I quit after I turned 17 because I started to feel a little silly racing a little 20" bike (I was 6'-3"). There wasn't a cruiser class yet in my local area. Plus I started focusing more time during summers training for cross country ski racing, which was totally different from training for BMX.
