1985 NBL grands in the 14- 15 open class, I was blowing everyone away nothing but first in all my moto's, (hey it was my home track) and a first in my 1/4, and then in the semi I was one of 2 guys on my gate without a National Number, and I drew gate #1, and anyone who has ever raced at derby city knows gate one sucks, so i got the best start of my life started moving over on the guy's next to me, you had to at that track because at that time gate one went straight into the tower, had a good lead on everyone going to the first jump, that jump was tricky that year, you has do do a little wheelie, then pre jump clear the lip, and tuck your butt, and ride down the other side, I had that jump dialed all day, untill that semi, cause my back tire didn't clear, and well I may have unoffically been the first guy to do a front flip on a bike, FUN FUN,,,

My worst wreak was around 86. I went down in a crowd of bikes and my middle finger on my right hand got caught in someones chain and chainring. Needless to say I got to have that finger reattached. I still have no feeling in the tip of that finger.

All these talk about fingers................I got the whole tip of my first finger caught in the chainring and it went halfway around--I had to freewheel it backwards to get my finger out----just stitches to mend it together---it did crush some bone too. This was not while racing though----I got hurt more goofing off than I did racing.

Well Joey let's see. Hmm, it was December 1980. I was a 14 expert racing in the Jag World Championships in Indy indoor on the concrete track with wooden table top jumps. I won my 1st moto. I thought wow, this is awesome, the biggest race of the year and I won a moto.

I then finished 6th in the 2nd moto only because me and some other dude got together.
Then came the 3rd moto. I happened to win it also. I was so excited that I popped a show off
wheelie at the finish line.

I didn't know my own strength cause I was so excited. I flipped the bike backwards and landed on
my left ankle breaking it in 3 places. The tibia, fibula, and a growth bone in my foot. Needless to say, I raced only one time after that and went car racing.

I was bummed cause I was gonna go to the main with people I had only read about in magazines.
My one shot of a possible Factory ride down the drain.

Florida State Championship race in 85 at Cape Coral. 16 Nov class. The first jump was a crazy steep and tall roller, and guys were slamming their front wheels on it all day. I only saw 3 other guys all day who could speed jump it and I had it dialed. It was easy really, all you had to do was pull the bike completely vertical and let the jump pull it back. So I guess they got tired of cleaning up all the wrecks there and wanted to move the motos along, so between the 2nd and 3rd motos they decided to chop the lip off the jump. I got a good start and was leading at the first jump, pulled up (not as hard as before cause the jump was like 8" shorter now), and let the front fall like i had all the previous laps, and my front wheel sank like a stone. I completely dead sailored and the back end launched off the new lip. I was still hanging on to the grips and my feet were still on the pedals when my face slammed into the ground. I got it on video at least.

LOL....I was at that race too! I was 9x. That first jump was brutal, especially for us younger guys that couldn't speed jump yet. All we could do is go all out and let the jump send us flying. Then we would land on flat solid groud and hope not to slip a pedal. They were scraping up guys from that jump all day. Anyone remember the first jump at Orlando when they moved to the fairgrounds?

Most people who knew me or was there remembered that .Homer from coastal needed my homestead story to jar his memory of me .They helicoptered me out across the street from the track.

Mine was 1982 at the Orange Y. Third moto in 15 expert I passed for the lead over the doubles. Then in the third corned I got punted over the berm in to the fence. Resulted in a compound fracture on my right leg. Had to go through three surgeries.

mine was at a loal race at the old st pete track back in '81. prior to the race my teammate and myself were learning to pedal the first jump at full speed. so, at the race i pulled the holeshot and coming up to the first jump i pulled up too early and my foot slipped off the pedal and jammed into the fork right at the lip of the jump and shot me like a catapult. i must have flipped a couple times in the air only to have just about everyone else run over me after i landed.

I got taken out on the berm one arvo (i was in 2nd spot) and fell on my face then 3 riders behind me rode across my back.

My worst wreck was at a track with a really fast 1st straight, I came to the 1st speed jump with the rest of the pack and someone hit me from the side. I came off at high and hit the up slope of the speed jump with my knee which was bent at the time.

The slam actually snapped my knee-cap in two, which in turn sheared my Quadriceps muscle and also snapped my Medial Collateral Ligament. After many operations and about 1 year in recovery I started riding again.

Mine was at my home track, Apache Land BMX in Sanger, CA(Randy Stumpfhauser's dad was the track manager). I was actually racing against Randy in a State Qualifier and I over cleared the doubles and shattered my Growth Plate in my ankle. My foot slipped of the pedal and I landed with my ankle parallel to the ground. It looked like I had a soft ball inside my sock. Two surgeries and nine months later I was back in action! This must have been around 1988. I miss those old days at the track. I used to be friends with Randy and we would always go to the track to practice during the week with another friend John Bushell. Sometimes we would go to Randy's track he had in his backyard. It trips me out that he is one of the best in the world now!

I was lucky I guess, I never crashed in a race (practice yes) until I was 19. The first time ever I had forgotten my gloves. My boss would let me leave at night to race as long as I came back and finished my work. I went down every moto and still managed to trophy in 3rd (thank god for the 2 8 y/o novices and a 10 novice racing cruisers that night). I tore my hands up pretty bad. I went back to work and used the first aid kit as best I could but it was hard with no hands. I went to my sister's house since her husband was a combat medic/EMT and woke him up to fix me. He used toothpicks to push the skin back to gether.

The worst part is I was 19 with no girlfriend and I couldn't take care of things for about 2 weeks to_take_umbrage.gif
