Yo Tom,
Thanks for ringing in here. Answers, in order or appearance:
Threads, I think, is the best way to approach it (both technologically, and from a community management POV). A full thread is, to me, a "body of work" on the part of the community, and as such is where the true value lies to VBMX as a whole. Naturally, every person posting to that thread can't get an award, but the topic starter gets the props for thinking and acting on behalf of the community.
Regarding best of voting on specific POSTS...Not so sure...we get SO many posts it would be really tough to get enough critical mass for votes to mean anything. (you could end up with a few dozen posts that have, say, five "best of" votes, and 200 that have four, 1200 that have three, etc). If the goal is to award the best of the best, we need the ability to "bracket down" to a set of winners within a month or so leading up to Rockford (whether a "winner" ultimately means the Top vote-getter in each of our categories, or the top 5 overall, or some combo thereof is still up for discussion). Also, with so many posts, you will probably end up with a few thousand best ofs per year. That is more action than some BOARDS get in a year.
The preserving pictures thing is a great idea as well, especially since most of our images are hosted off-site. I guess there would be a way to have a script go through and regularly "crawl" every thread on the board and write a PDF of the thread to an archive. As we stand here today, that capability is kind of "science fiction" (the means to do it does not exist in the current software, but the technology is definitely there for us to do it outside the confines of the software). Of course, the STORAGE demands required by such a feature might make it cost prohibitive, but it is definitely worth a looksee.
Best,
M

So this will be entire threads? Or single posts? Or both?
What about preserving any pictures in the threads? Is it possible to archieve a scrollable "copy" of a thread? This would preserve the pictures that may have been posted and since removed.
Did that make sense?
