Full Version: GT frame question

I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question because I am a newb to the site. BTW - I'm glad I found it! Love this site! Came across because I was looking for a few parts to try and replace on my GT because I started riding it again.

I have a GT bike that I purchased in late 86 early 87 when I was 13 years old. The rumor when purchasing it was the previous owner was a factory rider and it was a factory issued bike. I have no proof currently. There are no serial numbers on the frame anywhere, nada....

What does the lack of serial numbers mean?
How would I identify what year bike it is?

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Adam

Its not totally un-common for the serial to be non-existing. Usually its on the inside of the freewheel side rear dropout. Look again, if not well you have a more un-usual version from what I can see of an 82-83 GT pro. Got a closeup? Neat bike! I had many of those.

I would have to agree 81/82 gt pro and if its no sn its a early model...

serial number should be on the inside of the drive - side dropout

It's a date code too

My bad, thanks for the location. I obviously didn't have the rear wheel off when checking.

Serial is 122681

http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/info/122/

From this link it is mentioning the first four digit are relative to month and year but I doubt that is the case here...

Is this an 82? Dec? Jan?

Thanks.

2681 frames, not from Taiwan, in 1 month?

It's a 12/82

Here's mine:

1/82 307

Its a 24" - original owner

It looks a little different now, I put the spokes back on and some other more original parts

Ah, thanks for the info and picture proof! Love the cruiser! Hopefully my GT will look almost that good when I'm done. Thanks again.

The frame is an 82... Positive tongue.gif

82-83 frames were the same. The only difference on most were the seatpost tube decal. 82's had GT's wings and 83's were Nora Cups.

81's had the smaller diameter down tube to the bottom bracket. In 1982 they discontinued the euro BB on pro's after 81 and from that point on only used American BB, thus started using the larger tube. 81's and older are my favorite and harder to locate.
