Who produced the fastest racer? Was it the wset coast or the east coast?
Reilley1
San Fernado Valley and San Diego county has had one of the highest percentage of well known fast riders.

San Diego includes people like Boo Boo Moreno, Ricardo Pedroxa, Coy and Dale Hudson, Eddy and Mike King, Doug Davis, Bo Stevens, Johhny Johnson, Taylor Troney, Bob Haro, Tom Marsh, Mike Mendenhall, Rick Chastain, Shawn Texas, Kyopmi Waller, Todd Cotton, Ronnie Rioux, Pam Koble, Duane Williams, Kris Parenthau, Brian Evans, Dean Hamilton and quite a few others I am forgetting right now....
Thumperpilot
Depends on who you ask. I say west coast hands down. There are very fast racers from the east, but the talent is deeper out west.

I agree with SanJoseBMX. I remember making the main in 16x was like racing at a national. If you made the main with Richie Anderson, Mike Salido, Jon Anderson, Vern Lathen, Greg Liggins, Shannon Kahahane, Mike Decipolo, Bob Coover, and Van Argeros; then you were considered to be one of the elite in Nor-Cal !! And this is just 16X. I didn't even consider AA pro.

yea..... my 2 cents cali hands down ....with no disrespect to FLA, the northwest, midwest, and the east coast mafia. but man did i wish i lived cali back in 1978 when the stork was droppin bmx off in my part of the country. my heart rate used to elevate with just the site of bmxa on the magazine rack at the local party store.
Iceman
A lot more great racers came frome places where you could race regularly year round.
There are a ton of talented racers from other places that could run right with all of these guys if they could only have the same amount of track time.

Heya Crash! Been a while. I hope all is well.

Iceman
robert foshag
yes, your right and although i put my vote in for cali. I do think there were alotta riders not from the golden state capable of holding there own, some riders got more press than they should just because the mags were west coast pubs and they hailed from there. it makes sense that Cali bred the fast dogs, warm sunshine and company's kickin out bikes in there backyard would put anyone at a advantage.
Deanna
Michigan didn't do too badly. Quite a few world titles and national titles (along with overall World Rankings and National Rankings) in the list below.

Gary DeBacker
Brian Colgrove
John Tomac
Special "K" Collins
Wendy Winter
Troy Raatz
Andrew Soule
Brian Barlow
Solan Foster
Marc Steimer
Melanie Cline
Heather and Shevona McKenzie
Robyn DesJardins
Todd Kingsbury
Franko Gregory (He was so close to the border we may as well claim him) biggrin.gif
Matt McCollough (Spelling)
Wally and Sheri Boryczka
Bradley Comment
Mike Felts
Ed Bauer
Scott Hamond

I know I'm leaving a ton of people off but that's the names I came up when I looked at an MI05 and MI07 top 50 list for the banquet.
The only big name pro i can remember was Brian Barlow. I know there were others but none of them were nationally ranked to my knowledge so I didn't list them.
robert foshag
realisticaly, no disprespect to the Mi homies... me being one and along with my bro who by the way was 2nd at Indy in a very tough 14 open and TD. In good taste i wont go into my background. michigan has had its share of hotshoes but not nearly as cali and few other states. Great state still the same. smile.gif
EddieNelson
Ohio Riders (most just moved to warmer climate when they grew up) Fact: Hilliard Indoor racing was harder than nationals with quarter qualifiers in expert and eighths in 16 and over open every week all winter long. Fact: Some guys had higher state numbers than national numbers. You just had to be there to believe it.
robert foshag
i believe it eddy, as Mi boy comin to OHIO was a treat racing top 5 national riders... always LOVED Hilliard indoor..
yea OHIO VERY UNDERATED AS WELL!
Deanna
Rob,
I agree we didn't have the depth/climate or sheer size as the state of California or Florida but we always held our own on the national and world scene.

I know you said your from Michigan and I recognize your name but the cobwebs in my head won't give me a picture of you. Not sure if your older or younger than me. I'm 38 and got out of racing when I was 18. Been back into it for the past 3 years with some good finishes.

I was practicing up at Waterford today. Solan Foster was there I'm sure you remember him from BITD.
robert foshag
deana, i remember you well, all the way back to the colony days through the davis racing times and finaly world class, i didnt mean any disrespect, somehow us southern Mi boys got neglected at times, but thats water under the bridge. good to see your back at it. I still eat, breath and sleep bmx, but for now i have been been racing other types of bicycles but the blood still runs deep with BMX.
solan ....yea i remember his first claim to fame when he dusted the experts at memphis WOS in open and then in the TD ...classic!!!
Deanna
Rob,
No worries i didn't think you disrespected me at all. Do you still live in the area? You should come out to Waterford and hang out. We had a pretty good crew of old timers out there tonight.

What kind of bikes are you racing now. I do a bit of mountain biking. Mainly Highland and Pontiac Lake. Wouldn't mind getting into some local races when they have them at Pontiac Lake but my body is not built for endurance. Us BMXers are sprinters and I do pay the price when riding mnt.

I remember you riding for JMC but just can't picture what class or what our age difference is. That may help.

You definatly hit all the teams I rode for with the exception of the big one...... GT

You think you South Michigan Boys had it bad.... try being a female in a male dominated sport. Not many of us are remembered, atleast not the way the guys are.

Kelly B
California, Florida and Michigan.

I have been racing mainly on the road in cat 1/2 and in the fall i race cyclocross i do some UCI races and some other outta state events. your right about having the sprint skills as thats my only real strong point too bad old age is catchin up to me.. the mountain biking thing is fun as i raced those for about 7 years right after i got out bmx. i would LOVE to come out to waterford....but I KNOW it would be like heroin...when i get FULLY burned out on what im doin now i may make the leap back. i think about it everyday.
