I've been told that the way to distinquish between the two is to check the serial number for "PFS" which designates it as a Pro Freestyle Tour. My 87 GT catalog explains that the PFS has a longer standing platform but gives no other details to the specific differences. I have a faded and peeling day glow pink 87 with PFS stickers but I don't see any PFS stamping. Could it be a PFS? What are the true differences?

The only difference in 87 was the parts/accessories that came on the bikes. There were no different stampings telling the difference between a PFT and a PP. You probably have a PFT. The only frame that was different was the Performer in 87. That did not have the "S" bend in the downtube.

That's right, they both use the exact same f/f set. The difference is in the components. Some will tell you the "FS" stamp means it's a PFT but I did research last year and found several examples of survivor 87-88 pro performers with the "FS" stamp and some PFT's with no stamp.

I thought the difference was the 990's? pft=990's, pp=no 990's..?
mr coasterbrake
they both had 990s (u-brakes).

I've had my '87 Pro Performer since new, and although soo much of the parts were replaced/upgraded over the years, check this out - about 10 years back, I had a seriously, like NEW 'purple 87 Pro Freestyle Tour in my possession for a few weeks, until the guy (the idiot brother of an ex gf) needed it back, since he lost his license.

Yeah, I know.. this mint '87 PFT as daily transportation. But remember.. this was before the "vintage scene" came around. Bike shops still had tons of old stuff we'd kill for now, going cheap. I bought new white GT tires and Dia Compe brake shoes for that bike before he asked for it back, and I remember billing him 15 bucks for that stuff, LOL!

Anyways, I rode the PFT around for a bit while I had it, and I remember the only real difference was the front brakes - Nippons vs. the FS in the front, and the addition of frame/fork stands. Everything else was the same as my Pro Performer.

This bike may still exist, in the near NOS/mint condition. The kid only used it for a few weeks then moved to like NY or something. For some reason, I don't believe he took it with him. It's one of my missions in life to find it, and bring it to a safe, loving home. I gotta make a phone call or two on this!!!

Like I said...in the catalog both had 990's. And now that read the descriptions in the catalog carefully it is pretty clear.

(Under the Pro Performer)

"The Pro Performer, like the team model and Pro Freestyle Tour , is built from the new frame and fork"

SOOOOO, don't let anyone tell you differently. PP,PFT and PFT TEAM, ALL MADE WITH THE SAME FRAME, SAME MATERIAL, SAME WELDS

SAME BIKE!!!!!!!!

About half a year ago when I sold my survivor "PFT" Frame fork bars and post so I could fund my new rider ( 86 blue/chrome Haro Master!!!!) a GT expert insisted that listing it as a PFT was fraudulent and I must change it or be reported (because it didn't have a PFT on the serial #). It seems that some where IN FACT stamped PFT (seen'em) but not all.

Thanks for helping to solve the puzzle guys

Never seen a PFT stamp ever..............anyone else?
