Full Version: Multiple speed BMX?

I know that the standard BMX rear is a little cramped when built up with the hub flanges, freewheel/cassette setup, discs (that's another story alltogether) and chains. They obviously are built for one speed.

My question is this; Are there any companies that make a conversion or have found a way to add more gears to the standard BMX frame that is adjustable on the fly? I know White Industries makes the "dos freewheel" but in order to change gears, you have to manually take the chain off and replace it.

Any ideas?

The best one out there was the Browning Two speed kit. It was late Oldschool like around 85ish or so. I have never seen one in person or riden one but Bmx Plus did test one if my memory serves me correctly. It had a front chain wheel that part of it slid or something and accomplished the same thing as a front derailure but it never had to search for teeth. Browning is/was a gun company to my knowledge. There was a Nos is the box on Ebay a few months ago and it sold for a pretty reasonalbe price. I thought about bidding on it just because I have always wanted to see one.

Acs made one also. It was after I quite racing. I think it is called the Hole Shot. Its a two speed freewheel with a tensioner down below the rear wheel. Its useless for anyone over a hundred pounds from what I have been told.

Profile brought a 3 speed casette hub out, for BMX back in 98. They still make it i am pretty sure. Check out there website.

They still make the 3 speed BMX hub. Comes with derailure hanger. You use shimanoe cogs.

Josh,
Thanks my friend. I am going to repackage everything into a smaller box and get those out ASAP.
Thanks for the info on the hubs.

Are multi-speed hubs allowed in BMX racing today?

The answer would be yes. At least in the cruiser classes where you can run a MTB. I know that Joey Bradford raced and won on his 4X bike a few years ago at a few nationals. Lopes showed up in PHX one year with a 3-speed Mongoose (obviously custom made). Unless there have been changes to the rulebooks, they are legal.

That Mongoose was called a "Triple Threat". A BMX frame that was standard in dimensions except for the 130mm rear end.

Yes, but the frame Brian showed up on was a prototype, custom made for him. After they got some requests, Mongoose made the "Triple Threat" frame available, although I don't know how many were actually made and/or sold. It was an interesting idea though.

I know there was the ACS claws 2-speed. I bought a used Hawk that was a 2-speed with the ACS Claws hub and freewheels.

I have a 3/32" two speed 16T/18T Suntour B.M.X. Japan freewheel. i think it's for 24" cruisers. friend of mine gave it to me a few years ago and its just been sittin' in my toolbox. he said he ran a shimano XTR derailleur with it and shimano shifter on the bars. ya just gotta turn/set the range setting screws on the derailleur in pretty far to limit the range it moves for the two gears. pretty simple. it works on a 110mm spaced bmx frame with a regular threaded bmx wheel.

This is the Browning system, sold for $66 the other day;

I've been running the Profile 3-speed set-up on my custom 26" for years. Works sweet. If and when I do shift it on the the track I do it over a jump. Just click the shifter in the air and pedal once and you are dialed. It works sweet on the double into the first turn at Chandler BMX. It shifts and works excellnet. Never once has my chain come off. I have a 17,18,19 combo on mine, with a 39 up front.

That's him! He made some pretty cool stuff when I was kid. That bike in the picture above looks NICE. Almost makes me want to look into them.

Woody's a very good friend of mine. My custom 26" is a one-off he made for me a few years back. I told him what I wanted and we drew it up over lunch on a napkin and there we have it. It rides like a 24" and has race geometry, but it's a 26". Woody still makes some amazing stuff. You should see the stuff at his shop he doesn't show the public. Very, very, cool!

I believe it. That 26 of yours looks awesome. Where's his shop?
Thumperpilot
Connected to the back of his house. Definitely a place you need to be invited to. LOL!!!

Ha! Yeah, I would guess so - I misunderstood your comment; sounded like he had a retail-type shop - only reason I asked.

I ride my 26'er at Chandler BMX quite a bit. If you see me out there, swing by and say hello.

Does Woody still have anything to do with Direct Link or no? I remember seeing the OG Works bike back in like '86. It had a similar rear to a D Link but the front was like a Quadangle or TRM. Freaky!
4themasses
Does this work well on a 20" race setup? Has anyone raced wih one?

I remember the first one, I can remember, was Tommy Brackens in the early eighties...Powerlite maybe? That blew peoples minds!

Is this the guy/bike you're talking about ?
