Full Version: Help Me Fill in the "History of BMX" Timeline
VintageBMX.com > VintageBMX Talk > Vintage BMX Racing
MikeCarruth
As part of our partnership with the new web site "BeijingBMX.com," I am working on a "History of BMX" timeline to bring people who are just learning about BMX up to speed on the rich history in our sport.

The timeline I have roughed out so far starts on July 10, 1969 (which was, according to many accounts, the date of the first organized BMX race at Palms Park in Santa Monica). The end is 08.20.2008 when BMX debuts in the Olympics.

I am not going to give you the rest of MY timeline, as I would like YOU to fill in what, to you, were and are the pivotal events in the history of BMX Racing. It can be the first mass-produced BMX bike, the first National number one pro, the largest race ever, etc, etc.

So, please post your responses in the following format:

July 10, 1969 - First Organized BMX Race at Palms Park, Santa Monica, CA

If no specific date, you can use the month...or Just the year.

Looking for events that changed the sport, or the overall "method" of racing (like the first time someone used clips in a race...that would be a good one).

I have a handful of photos to go along with this, but if you have photos you'd like to contribute, we'll give you a photo credit.

Let's show the world that VintageBMX.com is where the history's at!

Best,

M

P.S. By posting here, you understand and agree that some, or all of your submission may be used in the story, and grant us permission to use it. People who's submissions and/ or images are used will get a "shout" in the "Special thanks to" section of the story. Images will carry a photo credit.

The American Bicycle Association (ABA BMX) was formed in Chandler, AZ. on October, 13th of 1977. Chandler BMX was ABA's first BMX Track and is still listed to this very day as ABA Track #1.

Awesome, thanks Shannon! Can we get some "follow the leader" action here??

The person with the most posts gets a "Hot Topic" tee!

Oct 7 1975, a father whos name BMX has forgot becomes the first parent to change his 5 years old gear after every moto. The kid, whos name BMX has forgot did progressively worse each race. 2 months later he abandoned BMX and currently resides at the Pelican Bay State Prison.

Don't forget On Any Sunday which to me is the single most important event in the history of BMX.

How about the NBA race in the LA Coliseum in 1974 and the Murray World Cup 1982?

Chandler BMX is also still on the very same peice of property since 1975. Yes, that's right. Two years before ABA was form it was ran by Merle Menniga as the Chandler Jaycees track.

That is correct on the dates for the Chandler track. We used to do Tuesday night races and drive up from Tucson back in 77!

But if you are doing history, don't forget that downhill at CORONA. I swear back in those days, if you wrecked, NBA officials would just cover you up and make you part of the track. There was no MERCY, but there were sidehacks.

Bart de Jong, www.fatbmx.com, December 2006 : History class never appealed to me. I dropped it as soon as I could. When it comes to BMX history, it's a different story. You see I’ve always thought that BMX originated in the USA in the late sixties until I walked passed a bookstore the other day. On the poster in the shop window was a picture of two kids riding bikes at a “fietscross” in 1956. The photo was taken in St.-Anthonis, Holland 15 miles from the FATBMX office. I walked in the store, searching for the mag and found “Ach Lieve Tijd”. The € 4.95 cover prize was a steal for a piece of BMX history. A quick search for more BMX pics was a negative but a story about Motocross I found. It mentioned that the sport of Motocross was started in the Netherlands on modified Nortons, DKW’s and BSA’s. Seeing that there is a truth to this, it is acceptable to believe that there were kids around pretending they had motorcycles but riding their bikes instead. Bicycle Motocross anyone? It’s hard to beat the date of the organized BMX race on Queensday of 1956. The Bultaco’s and Montesa’s had not made it to the USA yet and Scott Breithaupt wasn’t even born. Greetings from Holland, the country where BMX was born.

Yes, the Dutch have the oldest documented historical roots concerning early BMX (nice job BMX Mom), yet to me, there is no doubt an amazing and unique simultanius event that occured after the invention of the American 20 inch bicycle wheel and the subsequent emergence of BMX all through North America during the late sixties and seventies...

Essentially anywhere you could purchase a Shwinn Stingray in the States (or if you lived outside the US - the equivelent or copy such as the CCM Mustang in Canada for instance), BMX suddenly was born completely and naturaly in the back lots and vacant fields of most suburban neighborhoods.

It was kids imitating their Motorcycle Motorcross heros of the day and for some strange reason, it happened at pretty much the same time as Woodstock!

Thank the late sixties and thank the birth of the Shwinn Stingray! It is the basis for everything that followed up until the very first Japanese and American BMX designed bicycles in the early seventies.

I feel I need to point this out for accuracy sake. PALMS PARK IS NOT IN SANTA MONICA!!! I've been telling people this for years and it seems that it is always said that Santa Monica is the city where Palms Park is located. It is not! Palms Park was is and always has been in the Palms neighborhood of west Los Angeles. Its location is about 3 or 4 miles outside the Santa Monica city limits. As a young grommet I was a very minor part of that scene. I grew up in that general area (Venice beach.) and the races were put on by the "Los Angeles county dept of recreation and parks". The city of Santa Monica has its own dept of rec and parks. So for Historical accuracy please substitute Santa Monica for West Los Angeles when you make Your timeline. Let’s set the record strait once and for all.smile.gif

Karl D. VonSauerbronn invents the bicycle in 1816. We all owe this guy a big THANK YOU!

Charles Martin Hall brings us Aluminum from Ohio in 1866. No Aluminum frames or componenets without this guy.

George Eastman invents the first hand held camera 1888. Without this one, there's no BMX photo shoots!

Charles Goodyear invents the vulcanizing rubber process 1839. Without this we have no Comp III's.

Dirt master Team sweeps the Yamaha Gold Cup fianls in all three classes. David Clinton, Stu Thomsen, and Bobby Watts are the Chaps! Classes were small, medium and large. Riders were divide up by height and weight. LOL!!

Steve Veltman becomes the first ever ABA National #1 in both class in Cruiser in 1982. Steve also went on to win an ABA National #1 PRO title in 1993.

Brent and Brian Patterson become the first brother duo to told ABA National # 1 PRO titles. Brent in 1980 and Brian with 1982 and 1983 for three total.

Pistol Pete becomes the first PRO to win 4 ABA National #1 titles- 1984-86-91-92. Gary Ellis is the only other PRO with four ABA #1 Titles- 89-90-94-95.

John Purse sets a record that will probably never be broken with 25 ABA AA PRO wins in a single season in 1997. This is AA PRO wins, not counting open class wins. This record stills stands to this day.

Gary Ellis is #1 on the all-time AA PRO career wins list with 77. Gary retired from racing in 1998.

Clipless peddles are introduced to BMX racing by Brian Lopes and Mike King at the ABA World Cup time trail. I need to check the year but it was around 94-96. I'm thinking '96. Lopes also wore a full on skin suit for the time trail. LOL!!

That's enough for tonight. Have at it boys!

WELL sodbuster beat me to it on the real
location of palms park. when i first went there in 1972 ron mackler was the guy running the races with help from others richie lee for one. richie lee is another guy that most people don't know about. he did a lot for the kids in his venice area. thom lund, tom finvers, robbie o'hare, just to name few, and OH YEA his daughter BRENDA LEE she was one of the first powder puffs and was very good.
she later married bmx legend john george.

thumper ....... if i am not wrong the bmx track in simi valley california (and now a A.B.A. track) is the oldest/longest CONTINUELY run track in the U.SA.
i sat in at the city board meeting in 1972 to help get it started. it's been running bmx races ever since.

mongoosedrummer ....... WOODSTOCK was in aug. 1969. i think i was there but can't remember HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I just talked with Mike King about the Clips deal. It was the ABA BMX Fall Nationals in Burbank, California. The date was October 21st 1995. He said he also debuted the full face Carbon Fiber Troy Lee helemt at the that same event. So there are two cool facts to come out of the 1995 Burbank event.

N.P.S.A. national pedal sports association- founded by robert m. krokker in october 1974-taken over by ABA in 1988. first sanctioned race- april 25, 1975 in largo florida. first orginized race-may 18 1974 in clearwater florida.

here'a 1979 pic of the clearwater track.
also there was a central florida sanction F.B.M.X.A. in the late '70's-early '80's and is not mentioned in the wikipedia on bmx sanctions. it should be noted as it had a pro class even before NPSA did in '82 and attracted pros such as greg esser, eric and robbie rupe, roland veight and randy street . the jersey i'm wearing in the photo is an fbmxa jersey.

1962 Mattell introduces the Bronco and the Stallion designed to be like dirt bike motorcycles. They had shocks, knobby tires, and a pivoting swingarm. Very little attention is paid to this bike by bmx history but it is the first bmx bike.

What about Joe Cleavue showing up at the ABA Grands on the first 24" cruiser made by RRS. This changed the class from 26'ers to 24" cruisers as we know them today.

Christophe Leveque was the first foreign racer to win a ABA Title. ABA had a rule in the rulebook that stated a foriegn rider could not win an ABA Title. It was one of those dated rules, but a rule in the rule book none the less. 1997 rolls around and a French phenom named Christophe Leveque wins the ABA PRO title by the points, but loses it due to the dated rule. This then gives Gary Ellis his 4th ABA PRO title with him finishing second in points. This promps ABA to change this rule for the '98 Season. Christophe then wins the ABA PRO title in '98 and '99. It also starts the foriegn invasion on America and the ABA PRO is then won in 2000 by Wade Bootes from Austalia. 2001 and 2003 ABA PRO Titles are won by another Australian named Warwick Stevenson. Christophe changed the rules for the better.
