Hey guys I just scored this in a trade and want to get some details. I know its a GJS but need confirmation on the year so I can build it era correct etc.

There are photos attached and the serial that can be read is 17. The previous owner had the frame x-rayed for cracks etc and to see if there was more to the serial but both came up negative.

Any infor would be awesome. I am also on the hunt for forks and decals now as well.

Thanks
Sumo
Kurt.
Wow. Rare ride Jake. I'd love one of them. Nice pickup.

Sweeeeeeeeet Jake! Can't wait to see it built!
Sumo178
yeah i was working on a JMC deal and then this came up. All I want now is a JMC.

Oh I'm still waiting on that Patto but I did get told the serial has an "s" at the front if that means anything to you.
Kurt.
Bugger Jake - that's the smaller "Expert" sized frame - I'm looking for a "Pro" - has a P rather than an S.

Nice frame Sumo. A mate of mine had one brand new in 81. His was the same color too. He had silver bits and it looked hot.
Sumo178
Coasty where about, what area was that in? this was a hard rubish find apparently.
COASTY
Last time I saw him he was in the Hills area. North of Parramatta in Sydney. I lost track of him after 84.
Sumo178
this frame was found in NSW so it might be his old bike. Do you remember the year he got it?
COASTY
I remember our girlfriends at the time hated each other so it would be around 81. LOL
I have a pic of him but not his bike. His name is Alan Short. I think he bought it from Castle Cycles in Castle Hill. I wish I had a pic of it. It was a sweet bike.
Sumo178
well that makes sence because I've been told this is an 81 model.

They are such sweet frame! I have two of these one that was originally that same color. If anyone can get me a paint code for that color I would really appreciate it. There wasn't enough original paint left on my frame to match it up to anything.

That's the exact same color as my original GJS. I bought mine around 1980 from Bikefactory in Bellevue, Wa. Iraced the bike for a season (loved it), but the frame eventually cracked. My shop teacher welded it for me, and I painted it black. In 1982, I sold the bike (really rare part and all) for $50.
Last I heard, the bike made it's way to a mid west collector who painted it blue. I have a GJS just like your, and it is black. I am not sure if it's the original color.
I'd love to have a paint code as well.
Sumo178
I'll match it up as good as possible and let you all know.
Anyone know how to tell the year?

Mattblack
Hey I believe it is about 80-81 by the time it got here.

The earlier ones had a flat plate brake bridges later had right angles on them. Use the search GJS* you get plenty of results- JU said some stuff here at one point.

The serial number would be 17xx and I think it was Allans who Coasty said. It was for sale on ebay a while ago and was sold in the area were we grew up.
Sumo178
yeah thats the one I traded with the guy that won it on aussie ebay.
Sumo178
still trying to confirm a year guys

Hey Jake, Ive found a GJS ad in an old BMX Bugle(SE). Photo of an '81 frame and the gusset tubes are the same size. Not much help I know but Im thinking only JU would know for definate.
The seller I bought it off said she found it in a shed with a ton of other BMX stuff. But apart from the GJS and a Kuwa ET everything else was low-end. Maybe a clue to its origin?
Only had the dropouts x-rayed and couldnt do just one dropout for a better look. Like old SE serials the stamps are small and often light which doesnt help. From my experience x-rays would only help with serial #s if the the number had been pounded in and distorted the metal a little. Could make out the 1 and the 7 but if they had been either 3,8 or maybe 0 it would have been tough to tell the difference.

I'm not an expert and I can't say exact years, but the first gen GJS frames had two gusset tubes (as does this one) that were both the same size tubing (unlike this one). The next generation had two gusset tubes, as well, but they were different sizes (as with this one) and the later frames had only one gusset tube. I think 80/81 is likely; it's unlikely to be older than '79 or newer than '82, would be my sense. I've got correct repop decals, btw, if you need 'em.

Cheers,
Frazer

I'm with Frazer. I'm sure it's 80/81 with the diff sized tubes. The A84 (1984) frames had two tubes again but the angle of the diagonal tube was different.

Anyone come up with a paint code for this color red yet?
