Okay - I have been thinking a little bit about making a cruiser with a uni-blade fork - mabe even a slingshot ™ - Copyright... lol

So, does anyone have all the details of a Kastan uni-blade hub and if so can you show some detailed photos?

Now - for all you technical guys / gals out there - shoot me down (I can handle it).

It should be possilbe to cut one fork leg off, create a thicker dropout on the existing leg, then take a 36 hole (yes, they make them) wheelchair hub and lace it up and bolt it on using some new hardware set-up.

What do you people think? I am not going to spend $550 for a fork and hub! Let alone, it is only a 20".

Feedback?????

Don't let the guys at the vintage wheelchair site find out about this!
Especialy if you use a NOS hub. They're real purists over there.

Not sure why you would really want to do that...... but, if you do, Phil Wood makes some super nice wheelchair hubs!!!

The Kastan Hub used a rather large axle (much larger than a wheelchair) that was welded to the Uniblade. The hub would slide over this axle and was attached by a large nut similar to a headset locknut. This "Axle" design is very close to the current Cannondale "Lefty" forks that can be seen on MTB's. The 24" Kastan Uniblade I had back in the day just never felt right. Besides being flexy I really never felt secure riding it let along leaving the ground. Just thinking about it makes me want to upgrade my dental insurance.

Team,

I wouldn't even go near that project and I even rode for Kastan. Either buy one or give up, its a silly thought. Lynn Kastan had troubles making it work. Do you honestly think you will be able to? Sorry to come across harsh but I am trying to save you a lot of trouble and possible injury.

I've met Steven a few times and seen his incredible collection of bikes.
Always wanted to try riding a peg leg fork but it never happened.
It looks squirrely but Steve assures me as long as you don't look down you dont notice a difference.
I guess everyone has their " bucket list" build.
