Ted,

WOW, that's incredible to see those sheets. Looking at the competition I had in the semis makes me feel better about not making the main. Great win, BTW.

IMO we had the stacked semi and my opinion is supported by the number of nationals won by the guys in our semi. In no way am I trying to take any credit away from Ted's win. In the end, Ted won fair and square. This is just my opinion. No sour grapes here. smile.gif

I was tellin' Carruth yesterday I have just found the entire 1981 Jag World Championship ESPN broadcast on a VHS tape at my dad's house! Unreal stuff. Also, an added bonus for all of us from IL-- on the tape proceeding the jag was a CBS report on Itasca BMX! Probably 15mins long, discussing how a local there would last 6 hours! Yep... Remember those days...

Just convert it to .AVI or .WMV and I'll give you an FTP site to upload it so we can all download it here. At least for a limited time. Maybe we can have several mirror sites.

good memories!

I was there and got 3rd begind Medlin and King in 16X. The drama was with Andy Patterson thinking he made the main when he did not. 16X sat on the gate forever while that mess got figured out. Needless to say there was no Big Foot Patterson in the main. LOL

I have a couple of magazine shots from that race but do not have a scanner.

Does anyone remember inside the Hyatt the way that all of the hallways were open to below and the things that were being thrown off into the lobby? Someone would throw a few hundred stickers and everyone hanging out watching from their floor would cheer as they floated into the lobby. After awhile it became some kind of contest, little bars of soap attached to shower cap parachutes, rolls of toilet paper.... The hotel security would race up to what ever floor and the shower of things would stop for awhile but eventually they gave up just like the waffle house staff.

I remember because security came to my room trying to pin a flower pot thrown over on me. Furtunately my mom was there and had my aliby. Kids were out of control back then. Actually, it seems hotels have the same problem now as they did back in the 80's.

We stayed at that Hyatt as well. We were walking down the "hall" next to the railing when my Dad took off running and dove on the ground. I was thinking "What the..?" When I caught up to him he had a SMALL kid by the ankles between the railings. Pulled him back up over the railing, put him down and the kid took off running...

That was the race when my parents realized that BMX was more that just some goofy thing we liked to do on the weekend.

Mike,

That is the most remarkable story I have heard of that event. I can imagine your dad doing that. WOW! Somebody was sure lucky that day.

Other than someone almost falling to who knows what fate, what a great happening that Hyatt stay was. That race is what later inspired the Christmas National and President's Cup.

I cannot get over that story about your dad though.

LOL That's my story from the race. Reading it now, I can't help but ask "what were they THINKING, running that?" Not too bad for a 15 year old, but still. It was either a stroke of brilliance on their part, or a clear case of dereliction of duty tongue.gif

Thanks for posting that. Not sure if I have that issue anywhere, so it was cool to see it.

Best,

M

That's my brother Jim Williams #69 riding for Honey's Pizza behind Dave Marietti. I think he made it all the way to the semi's that weekend. He was FLYING that weekend!

I was there. The 1980 and 1981 Jox/Jag World Championships were the most memorable races of my BMX career.

Here are a couple of pictures of me from the 1981 race.

You were adorable! I totally don't remember having the picture taken at all. Thank your mom for me.

That '81 Jag race was a great one. What a blast for a 13 year old kid! All the video games around the track, the circus at the Hyatt, and being a part of such a huge race with kids from all over the world. I can clearly remember my parents telling me we had to leave after my brother's 11 Novice main (4th place) but I couldn't even imagine leaving without seeing the trophy dash. I was just standing there among the seats going out of my mind because I was there and the trophy dash was about to be run and I would miss it! I was gonna miss history man, the next World Champion was about to be decided and I would probably be in the back seat of our van in the parking lot when it happened. I had no idea the gate wouldn't drop until 1:30 am. Now I can see my parents' point, having to drive back to the Chicago suburbs and go to work the next day, but back then I was pretty mad. My favorite memory of that race though was when one of my best friends at the time, Tony Portillo, swooped Richie Anderson, who was my hero, and actually led him for a couple of seconds before Richie passed him back and won the eighth or quarter final they were running. That blew my mind. Tony swooped The Avalanche! I'll never forget that moment. Thanks Tony. Thanks Richie . Thanks Mom and Dad.
