The Red Baron
I found these in a bunch of negatives that had never been printed. These first 2 were some of the local kids at a jumping spot in Whittier called 'First and Lambert'.

Are any of you old enough to have used Motomags on you bikes BITD? Got any pictures?
Reilley1
Killer pictures Red
COASTY
Yeah but not in the US! Cool shots.

Is that first shot of the first "No Hander", that looks like a girls bike frame

Funny how shots like that make the memories flow, also makes ya wonder who that guy might be and how his life turned out. My strongest memories weren't of racing back then but of hangin out with my neighborhood BMX Buds at places like that.

Thanks for the nostalgia injection Dennis
Monster-Robot
Motomags, Carlisles and Redline forks everywhere! How cool!

I totally agree!

My Motomag days......

The Red Baron
Spike!!! You postin from Russia?

I don't remember seeing that bottom picture before. Are you riding/jumping the frieght train? I'm lovin the details in there; Ashtabula forks, Schwinn 'mag' sproket, your usual European influenced head-gear and gloves, Converse and duct taped pant leg. smile.gif ...but your seat post is much lower than usual.

Thanks Mike, cool stuff!
Cash Matthews
Spike:

That pic of you jumping into the grid is one of the best bmx pictures ever. Where is your landing ramp? Nice stuff.
The Red Baron
Can't have Motomag pictures without sidehack action. It was standard operational procedure for the bike part of the hack.

These are both from Coronas' first turn. That turn was probably the most photogenic turn in racing. These are probably from around 1976.

spike
Thanks Dennis and Cash, yes, I'm rockin' the freight train at Merritt not long after my L.A. trip and I'm posting the pics while in Stockholm, already been to Moscow and St. Petersburg and other places.
Stu Thomsen

rick kast
nice air on the last pic, stu
awesome
The Red Baron
I was hopeing you were gonna chime in with that picture Stu. That one was on my list to post next. That color jump pic at WSA would make a great Motomag add.
mongoosedrummer
This is a mind blowing thread!

Breathtaking vintage bmx at it's best!!!
The Red Baron
A couple more Motomag shots from around '76.

Heres my Kawi from BITD. Back of pic says June '76
Keep_It_Warm
Not 1970's and not cool B&W, but here's my younger brother in...hmmmm, maybe 1980/81/82???

My "freight train" that I ran for awile.

The Red Baron
Hey Spike, that side shot of your frieght train reminds me of those 'gravity bikes' they built in the 80s, long, sleek, and low.

That is great! I don't expect all pictures in this thread to be black & white. I also realize there are some of you out there who were not around BMX in the 70s. Hey post em if you goy em! smile.gif

A Kawi with Motomags, that screams old school.

If you never rode them BITD, you would probably be dissapointed. It's a nostaglia thing. They are heavy and stiff as heck. They served a purpose of not bending under the abuse we put them thru while jumping. Personally I thought they looked real cool at the time. I still love thier visual appeal.

Thanks for sharing guys.
The Red Baron
Let me see how far back I can reach. These are from my home track, WSA, way back in 1975. This first one is off the same jump as that real cool picture of Stu with the sun in the background. This is me and my teammate Todd with our ugly brown Western Sports Arama jerseys. (and Motomags)

This next one is a race shot from WSA, that is Chuck Pinkston in front with me in 3rd.
mongoosedrummer
Bump because Red Baron is the Man! wink.gif

Street testing Motomags in '76:

chooch123
Awesome thread!
The Red Baron
I was sooo fortunate to be in Southern California in the mid to late 70s when BMX was going through it's transition stage. Being a talkative, flamboyant redhead helped too. laugh.gif

Anyway, I was so very blessed that I even got my own photo session with the "great and powerful OZ". These are a couple of the pics (with Motomags even).

mongoosedrummer
Dennis we are all very lucky to have you on this site! wink.gif

These pictures are giving me goose bumps!

Although decades have gone by, it seems just like yesterday when I was reading "Minicycle/Bmx Action" looking at your pics and thinking... This guy is from another planet!

You ROCK!!! drinks.gif
John Sandberg
Awesome thread, awesome photos. Thanks all for sharing.

The Red Baron
I still have that bike pictured above, pretty much with all the same components. including the original Motomags. Reilley rebuilt it for me last year.

vonmark01

Yes it is. Quite possibly the only one left. smile.gif

Can't see the motomags very well, but I love this picture.

Last turn at Rancho San Diego.

The hack getting pimped, isn't that a Webco mag on the back? scratch_one-s_head.gif

This thread ROCKS!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif good2.gif

Not a Webco mag. Here is a Webco mag add.

The wheel on the rear of that hack is a MX60. In my opinion possibly the strongest wheel ever built. Motomags were susceptible to side stress and I remember my share of seeing and hearing of them breaking. I exploded a rear mag on my sidehack once. But as heavy as Motomags were, MX60s were heavier.

Stu raced with them for a time (and won) but he was 'strong like bull'! laugh.gif

MadCowboy
Wow! those had sealed bearings?? too freakin cool!
KenC
Smart move bringing this thread back.

Here are a few photos of a poor boys BMX (my Schwinn 77-78ish) Motomags, Gold stem, Grab On's, Redline bars and forks. with blue Comp II's

The Red Baron
Ya gotta just love a Stingray with Redline forks and Motomags!!!

I was thinking I was looking at 6 1/2" cranks but that might be stretching things a bit.

That's roots right there. smile.gif

I spy a Gran Torino station wagon in the first pic

How cool is it to see the advertising banners in the background in the second pic

And I love the fact that we get some good background info
btw what WSA?

WSA= Western Sports Arama

That is what I would consider my home track. It was located in the Orange County area of Southern California. It was the first track I raced at back in 1974 and I hung around there so much as a kid the owner ended up sponsoring me. smile.gif The track was built behind the existing batting cages. Some people called it "The Track Out Back".

You can see the batting cages behind me and my friend Herbie Wendorf. smile.gif

Here's a shot of me at the Cape Cod (MA) track in '76.

Hey Dennis was this pic taken at the wall? I think it was in La Habra???
The Red Baron
That pic was taken at First and Lambert in Whittier, named after the street intersection nearby. The street veered away from the railroad tracks and created the dip that we jumped in and out of.

Craigmeur77
Not Motomags but MX-60s on my Sting-Ray circa 77-78

and on my Mongoose circa 78-79
