So Today I pulled the old Mongoose out of the attic and broke the lower headset bearing, Where do I find a new bearing? I took it too 2 bike shops and no luck.
I pulled the bike out so my son could ride the bike, I had been telling stories of ABA racing many years ago. When I was racing the bike I upgraded everything but the frame. I was saving for a JMC, But never got there.
I am glad I found this site.
Any ideas what year my Mongoose is?

Without a serial number, I would guess at a `77. What's the serial number?

wow thats a killer goose. I would say a 76 with that gusset at the BB.
I'm surprised the shop didn't have a headset cup. They aren't anything special. Unless you wanted the proper Mongoose headset. They come up on ebay quite often.

How about a pic of that 1956 "kickstand" sitting in the back ground?...........
that looks pretty sweet too.

I was gonna say about the same thing. Old mongoose, what model of '56 is it? not a good enough picture to tell. I've got a '57 Chevy stepside and a '55 Chevy 210 sedan.

Looks like a 76 nickel frame with later model chrome forks. I too am loving that bow tie "kickstand"
Kick me an e-mail with your shipping address (RealtorKen@aol.com) and I'll send you the headset parts you need for that.
Welcome to the site!

The latest it could be with that gusset at the bottom bracket is an early 1977... you can tell exactly by looking at the serial number printed on the bottom bracket... what is it?

Serial number is: ch6 23781. I have been polising on the frame with the Mothers Power Ball (Where was that 25 years ago?), Its shining up real good.
I am meeting up with Ken Pliska this afternoon, He has the bearing I need.
The "Kickstand" is a 1956 Bel Air 2 door post. The funny thing is the Chevy obssesion started with Mongoose obsession, I think skate boarding was in there some where also, And Girls yet another ongoing obsession.
Thanks for all the help and input.

Steve,
Looks like an August 1976 Frame.
Bring that with you when you stop by today. Let's see what all you have on it.

Well 24 hours after pulling the Mongoose out of the attic, 2 failed trips to bike stores, 1 successfull trip to ken Pliska's house for a bearing and some new AME grips, Lots of polishing and bearing packing. Fianally a child hood dream of mine realized, My son to finally ride my old Mongoose. I kept wanting to hop on it myself but I was afraid I am a little over the weight limit on the wheels.
Thanks for the visit and the parts Ken Pliska, It was great talking BMX after all these years, You have some amazing bikes in your collection, I was and still am in awe of your BMXness.
Thanks to everyone else and this cool site for the help.
I think I will go lay claim to my brothers Mongoose in my moms barn, I will post some pics when I drag it home.

How is the brake attached? Did somebody add the brake bridge later?

Great story. I've got my original '76 as well....not too many of us around. It's great that you have the original finish too and didn't attack it with steel wool. Yeah,
I was wondering about the brake bridge. Keep us posted with pics. Did your brother get his at the same time.....love to hear the stories.

i hope Pl1ska didn't show you his "leg".
he will tell you he did it racing, but the real truth is he fell at his Dancing with the Stars birthday party.

jmt788, A piece of flat bar was welded in for the brake bridge, Which always killed me as a kid.
76 Mongeese, My older brother got his Mongoose about 6 months after me, He got tired of riding his Huffy while I was on my cool chrome Mongoose, However after My brother got his Mongoose my dad started to tease me that my brothers was shinier than mine

(Its a newer one than mine), Year unknown till this weekend, Ill be dragging his home.
Steve Bourke, Sorry I missed Kens leg, I was too busy looking at all the cool BMX stuff.
