I apologize if this is an old topic, but I'm relatively new here. Is there an existing thread of Where Are They Now for old school BMX racers?

I was curious about the usual suspects as well as some of the 'other' guys like Kevin Hull.
Deanna
I talk to Kevin often. He lives in Washington State and is working at Boeing I do believe.

Sorry, the last time I was on a track I was in high school and I obviously haven't kept up with the racing scene. Now I'm married with 3 kids, but I still go riding my 1983 GT with my 8 year old son.

Forgot to mention that Eric Carter is married to "Rocket" Rich Houseman and Gary Houseman's sister Laura.

Of course if you really want to know what some of the people are doing you listed you can always check out Gary's Tuesday 10 interviews. He does a real good job on tracking down and interviewing some of our sports greatest riders.

Sounds good to me! I miss the old GT Days. I had a pretty good childhood riding for that team. Nothing but good memories.

Red, Yes I did know Jon Anderson. I also had heard you were married to his sister. How is Jon doing these days? I'm not sure he would remember me as he was a few years older. I did know his teammate "Chicken" George Seevers real well. He went on to be teammates with me on GT and his dad Mike managed the team.

Someone on here recently mentioned Jon Anderson. He is a machinist nowadays, and is pretty private, and "shy" (if that is the right word) about his racing career. He certainly was a consist rider over his racing career.

That someone was probably me. I think I remember talking about him earlier. He is doing well and BMX is just something he did back then.

Now that you mention it, yes, it was you.

I'm glad Jon is doing well. He was one of those timeless racers from back then.

The last I heard of Jon Anderson was from a friend of his in Roseville, Cal ( Billy Bowerman Jr. ) He told me that he was a machinist for a small company that built drag racing components for top fuel drag cars. Also, he was heavily involved in r/c racing back in the day racing for Team Losi in SoCal. He did alot of R & D for Losi as well as designing some of the r/c cars we see today. He's definately a pioneer in radio control racing off-road racing 1/10th scale.

I quit racing in 1985 because I no longer enjoyed it. It seemed more like a business, so when Torker folded, I sold all my bikes and moved on to other things. Since then, I've gone to college and grad. school, and I have been teaching high school English for the past 13 years. I spend most of my free time these days on my boat. I fish saltwater bass tournaments and sometimes write and edit articles for saltwaterbassanglers.com

As far as looking for people goes, does anyone know Carl Butler from JMC? Mike Horton? Lots of others as well.

I always find it weird when people disassociate themselves with their past like it was some fat girl the used to date.

Does any one remember Alex Dameron and Jim Mackey back in the late 1980's?

Craig,

Good to see you posting on here. My brother remembers racing you at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney Australia. He travelled over from Christchurch New Zealand, and remembers you on a black chrome GT. He said you were fast smile.gif

If I recall, you have some tie up with New Zealand? Is that correct?

Cheers,

Mike

I remember him making quite a few main with big names like Mikey and D. Davis C.Townsend back in the day.
HBPUNK
thought i already gave a Pistol Pete sort of update on this thread but didnt

anyway Pistol Pete is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt under Joe Moriera, he ran through the ranks very fast and was a natural, incredible balance and just natural athleticism that was to be expected. He got his Black maybe 5yrs ago, havent heard any news on him in a few years now though.

I got word he was training when he was a Purple Belt, my friend that trained at his academy remembered I raced BMX and asked if I ever knew of a guy named Pistol Pete, that he heard he was pretty good at BMX, I said yeah he was ok, lol

I saw him at some tourneys and he was well rounded in all aspects
JohnnyJohnson OMAS DirtSlinger
Jim Mackey was fast in the early 80's if I remember correctly.
Think he won the 81' Worlds against Doug Davis.

Doug Davis is very much a family man and is an operations manager
at a very big automobile dealership in San Diego.

Shawn Texas came back to racing BMX in 1998 as a re-classified A Pro in ABA.
He wore a jersey that said "Team Jesus".
Got a few seconds at some nationals between fall and summer 98'
That year I saw him and his best friend Dex Arcibald at the So. Cal Nationals
at the Lakeside Rodeo Arena located in about 25 miles East of San Diego.
He got second in A Pro behind Mike Hanner (Herda's).
That was the last time I ever saw him.

Heard a rumor that Nor Cal old school BMX racer Anthony Wadley saw Shawn Texas
in Oakland sometime over the last few years.

WOW! Someone said "Pop Lemon!"
1981 little GT factory rider.
His real name was Preston Lemon.
I remember someone calling him calling him Pres Lem for laughs (?).
JohnnyJohnson OMAS DirtSlinger
Todd Henry moved to San Diego over 10 years ago.
He got back into BMX racing and was pretty good in the cruiser class.
He's in really good shape. I mean REALLY good shape.
I built him a custom XXL GT 20" a few years ago.
Was expecting him to really lay into his comp and make a big BMX comeback.
Then he got this idea to start a photography business focusing on action sports
He owns www.worldclassphoto.org
and he's doing reaaly great.

Talked to Gary Ellis about 2 years ago at the Legends of BMX Monster Reunion in Arizona.
He's got a corporate job and is completely out of BMX racing except for a handful of friends
he stays in touch with. After about 20 straight years of racing, he said is was definately time
to start the next chapter in his life. Said it took him quite a few years to make the adjustment.
Cherishes his BMX past for sure.
JohnnyJohnson OMAS DirtSlinger
Heard Wil Scurto was STILL running the family company either under the name Tuff Neck or Pro Neck
until just a few years ago. From what I heard, they were primarily making chainwheels.

Mike Scurto has a job at Oakley.

Hey, Mike, it's cool to hear about some of the people I used to race with. That was the only black chrome GT out that year, and it was my favorite bike. Won the '83 World Championship on it and took it to Australia as well. 83 was a good year. As far as NZ, I have family on the North Island, and I've been twice in the past few years. I'm thinking of heading to Australia and NZ this July and August..
