Its an 82. The bottom tube is bigger vs. 80-81's. Also the serial second digit states 8(2)....
They did away with the smaller bottom tube only to accomidate the euro BB that was once offered on the 79-81's... 82 it was American BB only and that when they did the bigger bottom tube...

What's the restoration plan? I have a GT of about the same vintage, with about the same pitting and corrosion. Is your buddy going to have it re-chromed, or just polish it up a bit?

Ted's chrome frames have turned out better than I've ever seen....period. Its almost toooo chrome.LOL!
I have this same frame/bike and mine looked the same way, so I had the chrome stripped and I powder coated it. It cost me about 100.00 and another 50.00 for real decals. If the forks didn't have a chunk of chrome missing I wouldn't have refinished it. I'd leave it.

A couple of quick questions - Who is Ted, does he do the actual chroming, and how can I get in touch with him?

I assume a frame with the number:
1283021
is a December 1983?

Jettmug: Ted Carl ( a vbmx member) has access to a re-chrome facility and from what I've seen first hand, its possibly the best chrome I've ever seen and I'm a car guy. Look him up, but its not cheap. I powder coated mine because it was cheaper for me AND I wanted it blue anyway

Brad I think he was right 1283021 would be a 12/83 #021. If it was a 1/82 it would be 12021

First post from a newbie! Just got my old GT back from a cousin that I'd loaned it to back in the early 90's. Thank God he kept it, but it's in really bad shape. Couldn't remember exactly when I got it, was thinking 81. The serial is 112640 and it looks pretty much just like the one in the OP. Will post a pic of what it looked like new later.

Thanks! Going to try an acid bath this weekend and get her all cleaned up. Would love to see my son in a couple of years riding a classic.
