http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/jls...risMongoose.jpgHere is my Mongoose project, so far. This bike was given to me by my daughter's friends dad. It was in sad shape when I first got it, but it is coming together nicely. I will keep you posted.

Sweet ride J Stew Okla-1!!!
A NOS Mongoose stamped Kashimax seat and some Mongoose grips would finish it of nicely!
Maybe a goldstem too...not sure if you have one.
Looks great - can't wait to see it finished.
Mick
Forgot to ask...what pedals you putting on it?

For an 82 the stem that is on it is fine. Besides, complete's didn't come with V bars either The correctness thing is getting real old. Reality is that most of us bought our bikes a part at a time or swapped out parts along the way. Just build it the way you would have wanted it back then, and screw the complete bike correctness thing.

I'm shure a few would want that part., Having to change out the stem (that I have seen catalog pic's of that year with that stem) seat, grips, and stuff. It doesn't need it to be a nice bike, or worthy of being shown. The point I am making is that many of us didn't buy completes. If you chose to build only perfect completes than good for you, but not all of us give a crap about perfectly accurate completes. We would rather build bikes the way we would have had them back then. Just because they didn't make pollished Araya 7Bs doesn't mean that someone didn't polish them back then. I used to polish alot of my parts BITD, then spray them with clear to protect the polish. I even clear coated my ano parts . The majority of the community who show at Rockford would turn their noses up at that, but that is what I did BITD and therefore it's accurate for any replica of a bike I owned back then. I guess it comes back around to erra correct argumants that allways start before, and continues after Rockford. I like seeing the accurate completes, but don't think they should get any more voting attention than any other bike. It's also getting to the point where we need a survivor class. in which the bike could have non-erra correct parts on that would represent the often neccesary changing of parts along the way.

I hear what you are saying. I never owned a "correct" bike in the 70's. So it dosen't float my boat now either.

As mentioned, this bike was given to me by my daughter's, friend's dad. It was quite a mess when I got it, but thanks to steel wool and new decals the frame looks brand new. The stem (Mongoose) was what was on it along with Mongoose bars. I opted to change it up with the red anodized parts I had off a Takara bike that I found at a garage sale. I'm going to finish it off with a red set of KKT pedals, red Oury's, red anodized brakes (Dia Compe), red plastic seat and black gumwalls. Personally, I don't care if it's a perfect match or not. I never had a bike like that BITD and I don't plan to have one now. I do this for a hobby. By buying, trading and finding things at Thrift Stores and Garage Sales I have very little in these projects. Bottom line, I do it for fun, that's what it's all about. I will keep you posted on the progress.

Here's an updated picture of the '82 Mongoose. I'm still waiting on a chain, grips and a stem pad. Hope to finish it up next weekend.

Bingo!
I understand why some would want something "factory stock" for collecting purposes or whatever, but it's just not my thing.
I never had a "stock" bike - ever.... never saw one I'd want either.
Every bike that's rolled off the line in my riding lifetime has had parts that didn't fit my personal tastes.
So we changed 'em.
Never had the money as a kid to build 'em from "scratch" with all our fav's, so you bought what you could and changed what you wanted/had to.
Actually - I can remember the ribbing guys would take for showing up with something that looked like it just rolled off the showroom floor.
"Dude - if you can afford a Pro Star, then you can afford to get some decent grips and cranks" - lol
Just my two-cents.

I 100% respect and admire the "correct" bikes but they can get boring to look at after a while.
We already know what they are supposed to look like anyway.
I totally dig "custom" built or "swappped parts" builds because they always show the soul of the owner/builder.
Who ever rode a 100% stock bike for any amount of time anyway? Again, no disrespect, but I'll take mine personalized.
Awesome GOOSE! Love the spread of red...
