WOW.

This is unbelievable. This could really be a turning point for this hobby and I certainly hope for the better. Best wishes John. It sounds like you will be looking out for all our interests as collectors. We need more people involved in this hobby.

It terms of the new school market, the products and styles are flat. I hope you can shake it up a bit.

Whatever you do please make these products in the US. However, you may want to consider chrome plating outside the US to keep costs down.

Ha! My unobtainable dream would be to build a new-school JMC and name it the Jim Melton signature. There's no other guy I can think of who has more class that him, or should be immortalized in such a positive way. I think he truly enjoys helping other guys restore his product. That comes from the root of his personality, and I'd like to think that's why he kept such good records.

Whew! Big concepts. I would like to talk with Toby. I never knew he was with Sinz until 3 years ago when I shot an e-mail off to them with a pic of my Judge II saying that I wanted to add 1 piece of new-school to my bike to remind myself that this was a modern build (even though everything was vintage). I chose the Sinz chain ring because I really like the style, and can see a subtle flair of old-school in it. I was surprised to see the reply come from him.

For those interested, the Hutch chrome was done thusly:

Copper plate, polished by hand
Then Nickel Plate, polished by hand
Final coat of chrome plate

Yummy!!
monkeybiscuits
good luck with the new venture, can't wait to see the products...!!

In addition to he tires mentioned above, I'd like to see Snake Belly skinwalls be made. There are already a lot of Comp knockoffs.
Bill
Congratulations John on your venture and welcome to the pool, the water's warm.

When I set out to produce the Mongoose and GT decals, my goal was to provide an affordable source for collectors to finish their bikes and allow the NOS decals to be preserved and gain in value. We recently received approval to produce and sell Team Mongoose Factory Grips. I'm excited about this addition and now with John geting the Hutch brand going, it will only be positive for our hobby.

I mean look at the current state of Hutch repop stickers 79.00 for Hollywood stickers yikes whats the profit margian on that 400 percent??

$34.95 a set for my Mongoose decals since day one. And they are made in the same labor intensive method of the old school decals, screen printing.
66alfa_gtv
There are a lot of comp like knock-offs, but none of them capture the original Comp II. Colored sidewalls and skinwalls (not gumwalls!) with the correct texture and proportions would be a huge deal for us vintage guys. An original set is almost impossible to find, and it's certainly not a good idea to ride them.

Thank you, Bill. I wish there were more people who had the combined passion for bmx, and the knowledge of manufacturing to be able to resurrect more of the great names. It's the whole car dealership analogy. Ever wonder why they are always located next to each other even though they are all competitors? Because people will always go to that area to buy cars, and they actually support each other's efforts just by being there.

I wish I could do silk-screened decals. But with so many sizes and style variations that Hutch had, the setup and investment cost would be too much. Mine are still top quality, albeit using modern print technology. For the preservationist fanatics out there, it supports the argument that there is a difference between mine and vintage originals.

Wow that is great news, always was a fan but never owned one. Now I have a chance and don't have to pay collector prices. Will it be remakes of past line or are they going to be all modern with the name being carried over? Would love to see both a rerun of old for nostalgia and a new days one that we can take to the track without fear of damaging a rare collector. I am sure your heart will take you in the right direction.

That would be cool to see new Hutch bikes at the track, not just old school. To me, Hutch was about the chrome and being American made with no cheap shortcuts.
If todays frames are mostly (if not all) aluminum, can this be chromed effectively to build a modern day bmx bike? I went to the track recently, and while the painted bikes can look cool, I miss that chrome.
MikeCarruth
Isn't chrome-on-aluminum a manufacturing impossibility? I once heard the reason there were no chrome PK Rippers BITD (polished, yes...show chrome...no) was due to the fact that the very process of chroming would melt an aluminum frame. Maybe tech has caught up...maybe I am full of it in the first place (accused...never proved smile.gif ). I am not a shop-floor kind of guy, but I think this is the case. John...anyone?

I think it's more that just about every time you chrome aluminum, it's gonna peel sooner or later, big time.

G-Boy Frames and Forks in the 1970s and Araya Hoops up until the late 1990s are just a few examples that it can be done on a production run. The last set of G-Boy forks I restored had to be stripped, coated with some type of liquid, and then chrome plated to replicate the original process.

By The Way John, Congrats on the purchase!

I had a set of 24" 7x's chromed, along with a Phil spyder and a couple other items. It is difficult to find a shop that does chrome on aluminum. I believe the process is very different, and may include cyanide or some similarly dangerous chemical which has tight regulations. Don't quote me on this, but I vaguely remember something along these lines. Oh, and I think chroming die-cast aluminum (like Hutch pedal bodies) is even different yet.

Thanks again for the positive comments. I really do appreciate it.

Nope! I have had many aluminum parts chrome plated by a shop here in IL and they turned out great! The prices are very reasonable as well!

Hey John, how bout this guy: Ebay

That guy will be gone very soon, if only the VeRO registration wasn't such a long process. He's probably the same guy that was walking around Rockford last year at 7:00 AM with them stacked on his fingers saying "$25...anyone? $25?".

There's going to be a couple guys who make repro decals, perhaps members of this site, that will not be too happy with me either. But here's the deal: I started this whole Hutch process by making decals because 1. Chris Baron made the best quality and was getting out of the sport and 2. nobody else was making high-quality Hutch decals. So yes, I will say I am 99.9% sure I made mine available before the others who are selling now anyways. The only exception may be 302Zapper, and he had a reputation for misrepresenting and saying his repros were NOS.

How does $199.95 sound... $299.95 with ti spindles? Die-stamped cages. Die-cast bodies. Plated/polished, plated/ano, or even powder/ano color combos? Oh darn, there goes the cat out of the bag. Ah what the heck. Chalk it up to market research.

There was a guy a few years back out of the UK making super-high-quality shirts like that with a heat transfer-type process. I bought the Factory Team short sleeve, and also the white shirt with red long-sleeves and white stars throughout. Both shirts still look like brand new to this day. They weren't cheap, but they were very nice quality. I love those heavy-weight shirts too. I still have his contact info, so I'll send him a message.

No interest to me that these new pieces engraved Hutch.

Copies made in taiwan with high prices ?..

The majority of the NOS Hutch bear trap pedals that you see on ebay were actually manufactured in Taiwan. Ever wonder for a moment why they come in a plain white box instead of the display-case box?

Wow! This is totally mad! Never thought I'd see the day this would happen. At first I thought this was someone's joke but I take it you are quite serious about this. This is very cool. One day I was contacted by Richard's brother Jerry. He mentioned that he had found a Hutch web site I had built several years ago and thought it was cool that I had made it and consequently told Richard about it. I had then talked to Jerry on a few occasions and he even gave me a few cool free things from the Hutch past (poster, and a magazine signed by Richard himself for me. Very cool!). I am guessing many people here have probably seen the site at www.hutch-bikes.com. I haven't maintained it much in the last few years as I've been busy with other things and was unsuccessful in getting Richard to detail the company history for the site. Jerry has said that he and Richard had both seen it and when I offered to rewrite everything in Richard's words I was told that, although they thought the site was very cool, at that time Richard was not interested in talking about the Hutch bike company history. I got the impression that he wasn't happy with the way the company had ended. That might not be true, that's just the impression I got. He had mentioned that Richard had said some of the stuff on the site was incorrect but I was unable to get him to point out any mistakes to correct them. Anyway, I never got to talk to Richard himself, just his brother. I think it's great that this company name is coming back. What Hutch fanatic among us hasn't had that very dream? I suppose that as the Hutch company is returning there will not be much need of "fan sites" any longer so if and when the site should need to come down feel free to contact me about it.

Jason

The fact is simple, John owns the legal rights to the name and as such, he is within his legal rights to protect his investment. Ebay recognizes and did what is right when there is a trademark violation, they removed the items.

jcbel
Congratulations on buying Hutch and bringing the name back to the sport. Maybe now I can get a good set of Hutch chrome pads and frame stickers. I would really like to see someone on Vintage buy the rights to Speed Unlimited/Thruster. I know someone tried but that was a flop and the name went onto motorcycle stands. BTW, Does this affect Kappa in any way?
John De Bruin
Wow Jason. Great story! A 2003 autograph. That's as recent a mention of Richard that I've ever seen.

Don't worry, I don't plan on building a fan site as much of an place for product. I hope others continue to build great fan sites.

jcbel, I don't have a problem with anything Kappa has done previously. I have no idea what his present or future plans are. Who knows, maybe he and I will connect for some new-school product development.
Bill
Richard Hutchins was inducted into the ABA Hall of Fame in 2003. Shannon (Thumperpilot) Gillette attempted to contact him to let him know that he was inducted and that ABA would like to fly him and a guest to Tulsa OK for the induction ceremony. The message was received by his son who "passed" the message to his dad. They declined the invitation to attend the ceremony and when Shannon asked for an address to ship the award plague, we never heard back from them. It still sits in our office to this day.

Sir, besides now owning the company, I actually brought my reproduction decal sets to the market and eBay long before you. Part of the reason I stopped posting decals was because of people like you, who create less quality and cheaper priced product. The tradition of Hutch dictates that the highest quality should be maintained, and I have done that from the beginning. Now that your product can not be sold I will be able to again list my product. Thankfully, most people have purchased my decals through word-of-mouth, but I will resume to list them on eBay in the near future.
Respectfully,
John
John De Bruin
I have no grand scheme to try and contact Richard. His absense makes a clear statement that he doesn't wish to engage or comment. I think it would be awesome to get the guy to comment on a 20 questions written interview at his convenience, but even that will probably never happen.
stefane

Is this a joke? No one that "buys" a large name brand in "ANY" business talks like that.

I disagree with people starting old businesses (20+ yrs ago...which does not happen much at all) and trying to bring it back. It's like making a 2nd sequel of a movie....most fail.

John, I do wish you luck. Hutch was a great thing, as well as many other old school products. The good part is, that at least you caught it before it went to department stores.
Kurt.
