I always thought that the Au's were Amish because Mr. Au had the beard with no stach. Apparently they aren't, who knew??

I just watched the videos of the old school race. It looked like a good time.

Now please explain to me, how you were able to convince Tommy M. to get one of the precious JMC's dirty? I had to watch it twice... still can't believe it.

Any plans for a 2009 version?

I got out the cruiser a while back, ever before this OS race was announced, and it was so much fun on the track. It really loves to jump. I didn't have room to bring 2 bikes with all the other riders I brought, so I had to ride it in the regular class, also. Like Steve, I skipped the Class Main, it wasn't why I was there. I don'treally care about "state points". I might have raced it if it wasn't raining. The JMC is almost as fast as my Staats is.
On another subject, Steve, what is with you and crashing? I herd you went down in the Main at the Redline Finals. I hope you are alright. Tommy

Funny mr bill photo..I remember that look/bike/uniform as well at my first year at hilliard in 82'.

Yes i know ,i know,it wasnt tech. a crash i rolled/slipped a pedal.I did the same at the east moline natl and blew that win too scratch_one-s_head.gif
.I cant win ....To top it all bob had the flier wrong for the state series and if i hadnt went to east moline raced the states instead of as listed [only brookville] we woulda qualified for the state final=my son 2nd at the kettering qual.and won the final last weekend -he woulda been ohio #1 talk about a major mistake ,good thing hes only 5 and dont care too much ..
BMX TEACHER
Steve, thanks for the update, I herd your crash was much worse. About the ABA State series, I never really put much into it. Your son will win much bigger things. Our Cruiser class was won by a fist year rider, Roger Compton, from here in Toledo. He was so excited. Makes me feel good about racing when that happens. Its all good.

The 2 or 3 riders that slammed me from behind got the bad end im so fat i didnt get much carnage ..Ryan fultz severly hurt his shoulder from what i hear .Guess from what frank hull says he tore the muscle in 3 places and broke some bones too, along with some kidaver donor parts to hook it all back together.
Wondered what happened to you at the final.
Travis welch said he got #1 did they combine 30-35 with 36-40

Steve, I can only get out once in a while, I got home responsibilities. I can only get family members to help out once in a while. My wife takes our daughter to Regattas, and if a race falls on that weekend, I'm stuck at home. Reason I wasn't at the Cup or the State Finals. Kids stuff comes first in my family. I just wish they were into BMX. I have 3 and they all are into other sports. Not that I'm complaining, I love watching them do their own thing. I'll be seeing you around, its just a matter of timing. I really hope that Ryan heals and comes back. He has always said that if he got hurt he would stop riding. We need fast riders to push the race along.

That is too bad about Ryan. HE raced a few of the NBL state races and did really well. Hate to hear he got hurt.

You guys should check out the NBL state series, we have had a main at nearly every state race in 35-39 cruiser - meaning 7-12 guys each race.
BMX TEACHER
Chris, I would love to ride both sanctions. But with my schedule as it is, I'm only riding ABA due to the fact that is what my local tracks are. If the track in Toledo goes NBL, so will I. Then I will hit those races. Right now we have enough riders to fill a gate every race with riders who really enjoy riding. We may not be the fastest group, but we are having fun. Lay Industrial BMX is closing at the end of the year. There will be a new track opening next spring in Toledo. It should be near the Auto race track about 5 miles from the existing track. More info to come later.

We need to schedule a Old School trip to Rays. Whos in?

Chris C.
I am very excited about Rays this year. It's closer than the nearest known indoor track, so I suspect I'll be there way more than last year.

Oh, that's a long way of saying I am in for an old school get together at Rays. PLus, it might let the northern OH gang get there a little easier than going to Kettering.

In the past, the way I understood it, is that you can get in any time on a bike with bigger than 20" wheels, so a cruiser gets you in anytime. I had no issues on a Sunday on my cruiser - then again, I am not drawing any attention to myself due to the way I jump (well, at least not in a positive, getting too rad kinda way. LOL)

My hope this year is to do Saturdays and be there when they open, ride a few hours, and be home to have Saturday afternoon/evening with the family.

Ray has always been cool about letting the older guys ride 20's anytime. I think he just doesn't want to deal with the younger bmx guy's causing trouble. I've never been turned away on my 20" @ rays.

Hey guys, I am new to this forum and I caught this ohio thread. I came here looking to build a bike that was stolen from me when I was 11 or 12 back in 1983. I just recently realized that one of the dads of my son's football team here in Mansfield is Billy Au. I was talking to Nicole his wife when I mentioned that I wanted to build a redline 600a for my 10 year old son. She freaks out and tells me her husband was a professional rider and was sponsored by DK. Billy Au. Well I dont know Billy that well yet but he is going to help me in my quest for my vintage redline. It also turns out that the coach of my sons team, who is also one of my best friends is Mike Osgar who raced for GT and finally Titan! He never brought up that he was a racer either. SOOOOO do you guys have any dirt on Billy or Mike that I can embarrass them with? Nothin too bad I hope.

Billy is a class act. Always has been.

Billy IS a great guy... In fact, his entire family is.

He and I raced VERY competitively for probably 10 years and I can honestly say that we never had any issues. Sorry, no dirt from me, but I probably have some old pictures that might help! sarcastic.gif

The next time you see him, tell him Mike Kiniyalocts said hello and PLEASE try to get him on this site! I KNOW there are a LOT of us who would like to catch up with BA.

No I don't think so... That Matt runs a bike shop in Mass. called
Peak Peformance; he's the guy that rode for Kuwahara and later Huffy back in the 80's, I think he still kills it on his MTB.

Not sure what Ohio track this is from. I'm thinking this was '77. Factory Schwinn was at this race (Rupe's and some others). I was from Pa and rode for Wheels Unlimited. In front of the NBA truck is the owner of the shop and Matt Harris. So long ago can't remember the track....

No my name is marc. This all started because I want to buy a redline 600a for nostalgic purposes. It was stolen and I never got over it. My son is 10 and i have found a way to get that 600a back! Give it to my son! From there i have met billy, found out that Mike Osgar one of my best friends was a racer along with his friend. They have told me they would help me assemble or locate a 600a. We have some people talking to me but Billy wanted to contact some of his friends first to see if we could find one. He has been so helpful I thought I would check this site and lo and behold, I see his name everywhere! It is just a small world. Me personally...i never raced, but my friends did and we all had nice bmx bikes back in the day.

Wow I am glad I found this site, my sister and I raced back in the 80's - 90's.

(Mike and Michelle Dean)

She told me about the vintage bmx days at Kettering back in august, I was unable to attend due to my work schedule. I really wish I could have.

Man reading all of these posts made me realize how much fun we had racing, seeing all of the places across the country and meeting all of the awesome people. There is not one person on here that I don’t remember.

My parents have a TON of pictures, and videos from back in the day,

From:

Brookville
Kettering
Lagonda
Hilliard
The Christmas classic (which I live 10 miles away from now)
Nashville
The Louisville grands, and many more.

I will get them scanned and get some posted.

Thanks for the good times

Hey Sean and Jared,

How you guys doin ?

Well Jared its good to see you and Nikki are still together. I ended up in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin because of a girl. Id been with her for about 4yrs. She was deaf and didnt know many people here and had gone thru some depression. She split one day and left for wisconsin. Later we worked things out and i agreed to move up here so she could be around her family and friends. A yr later we had a baby. 6 weeks after the baby was born... she split again for a cop who lives in Maryland. She had been chatting with the dude on the internet for some time. So now im stuck up here... tied to a lease atm. in a month or so i plan to move closer to Madison WI where i work. I drive an hr each way every day and its breaking me.

Meanwhile since I am up here. im goin to use the remainder of my stay here to focus on my art. toss some stuff into some galleries in madison, chicago, and milwaukee. I need the time to myself to rediscover myself.

I'll be honest quitting BMX a long time ago was a big mistake, when i was doin that i had a purpose. I was driven ya know each day to get up and go out with a shovel to build a jump and just ride. I'm sure u all remember the adrenaline that we thrived on to go faster... jump higher... to pull off something obscure we saw in a magazine... even if some of us never attained iwhat we envisioned for ourselves, just doin it every day and not giving up or letting someone take that from you gave life meaning.

Ever since i stopped i havent found anything quite like it to replace that drive. I've ended up working a poor paying job paying bills and not having anything at the end to show for it. such is life and getting old.

Now I've been given a chance to rekindle that kinda fire into a new direction. Art, although less dangerous seems to be where i can rebuild my self.

As for that crash in Indy... lol yea i got knocked silly. I walked up to Todd Lyons and forgot he knew me... lol he was the only person i recognised after the crash. He helped me over to the medic tent. I left a 4" deep face print on the track and remember the track had been steamrolled! I tore half the flesh off my face on my left side. I was like "Hey your Todd Lyons!!, (all dazed and stuff" lol he said " you alright kevin?" and i was like "you know who i am?" he said yea man and laughed at me. i was like "oh" Then later 2 hrs later i still couldnt remember who i rode to the track with... I remembered the Dean's so Chris Moeller let me borrow the BMX Plus Test Redline 500c bike. I raced with one eye sealed shut and finished 3rd in my main. Reason i raced instead of goin to the hospital was they were giving away an MCS frame ( which we found out later were defective framesets.) all weekend that weekend i believed i was in Akron Ohio instead of Indy. I've never ben knocked like that since... well there was the time i had my ear cut off at the NBL grands.

McDonalds trails.... Too bad i never got to finish the place... just as well tho the city bull dozed it. Too me a long time to dig that stuff. 1 ft under the surface was a lime bed. I had to use picks and never figured out a way to drain the berms after a rain... Broke my collar bone there with michelle dean. (gofer dig a tunnel in the backside of that one large jump in the back) Ive got some goofy picks of greg beam myself and sean at McDonalds.) ill try and get them scanned in.

Yea man i miss it all.

Oh yea... and yes that was my art on WOXY.com

Whats up kevin, its mike dean.

I was by the old track not too long ago and it's still there. A little overgrown and worn down but still there. I thought I saw an ad a while back in the For Sale section where it was for sale. $179,000 rings a bell for price but don't quote me. I loved that track. Especially Friday night racing!

So I was wondering where all the Ohio BMXers went. Most of you guys left me here all by myself. LOL

Good to see some of you are back on it & on this thread.

Pic of me is from 1983 when I was 11yrs old. At these jumps in Upper Arlington called Ciao's. If any of you ever came to my house back in the day, we probably rode to these jumps. You had to sprint across the parking lot & launch the jumps to the flat ground. Fun stuff back then.

I remember riding the Coasters by the Kiniyalocts house. And I still remember how to spell their name after all these years.

I got a few names for ya that have just popped into my head:

Marty Brown (and his dad who ran the gates at Madison)

Aaron & Andrea Cargle. They were black & rode for GT around 1981. I beleive that they were ranked nationally. Aaron was #1 in Ohio until I & some others came onto the scene. I think we retired him by 1983. LOL...

Scott Wallace. He was my age & I think from Norwalk.

Vince Cowie. Me & him were buddies. He was my age as well.

Michelle & Mike Dean. Michelle went out with Chris Moeller in the late 80's.

Matt Henry. He was in my age group. I think he was def.

Aaron Hido e-mailed me a bit ago. He sent pics of his brother Todd with an '07 Floval Flyer. Cool.

Nobody has mentioned my brother, Brad. He was at the races back in the day. The he started riding "freestyle" with the Mid-Ohio Trick Team & the Chesrown Trick Team. My uncle Jim ran the team & shows with Dave DeMattis, Russell Tschimpke, David Fenstermaker, & my bro.

Brad Leach. He was a couple years younger than me. He rode for DK.

I think Lisa Vonderhae was one of the first girls who I ever kissed back in the mid 80's. And no, it's not in my journal. I didn't start my daily journal until 1988. LOL...

Anyone remember Craig Billingsly? He got back into BMX quite a few years ago & opened up "The Flow" skatepark in Columbus. It's one of the most famouse skateparks in the USA.

That's all I got for now. I'll have to dig through my photo albums when I get back home to jog the memory.

Billy was one of the nicest of the guys in the sport. It seems like every one younger than him looked up to him. We traveled with their family for years and still see his parents at car shows several times a year. I'd love a chance to catch up with Billy. We were at his wedding, but there were alot of people and I didn't get much of a chance to chat with him.

It would be great to see him on here.

I have joined the ranks of the officially un-retired racers. In fact, just got back from the Evansville NBL national and regional championships. Killer track. There are more and more 80s guys making their way back out.

Checking in from Cincinnati...Remeber Eastern Hills BMX/River Star? We were a small group of ABA riders at first. The names I remeber are Dan Lane, Nick Person, Bart Labby, Jeff & John Westerkamp, Daren Danials, Ashly Lutz, (ME- Scott Janssens), and I forget so many more. We would also race the downhill northern Kentucky track, Boone Woods. It was never the same once we switched to the NBL. Lots of nice people and great riders in the NBL (and fast) but the vibe was just different. Scott

I talked to Ashly at Evansville too. He gave my son some great advise about overcoming fear after a crash he had a few weeks ago. It helped. The Car show days were great fun. I cleaned my bike for a week getting it ready. It also gave us BMX'ers a reasone to get together in the winter other than racing indoor. We had a blast the last year riding in the shinny hallways of the convention center offices. After we got done, we saw all the skid marks on the floor and tire marks on the walls. Looking back on that now, that is probably the reason why we never got invited back. It was great exposure for our sport and we screwed it up. Scott

Hi I'am helping get the hamilton track back together and was looking for some pictures of it back in the 70's or 80's if you can help me that would be great also we are having a night race there november 1 please come out and see the track and share some stories we also have a web site it is www.hamiltonbmx.com if you have pics of the track or some history lessons i'm willing to listen or read them so i can put them on the history section of the web site thanks. steve s.

I started racing in Ft. Hamilton in the summer of 79... Let me look through my "archives" and see if I can find any old pics from back then...
