Steve, thanks for all the clarification and certainly for all the work you have put into this!

I raced 20" and 24" today at the Warnike race at Heer Park. Only 12 motos and I thought I was going to die racing both bikes. LOL!!

I raced one bike on Sat. and thought the same thing. Lots of respect for trying it on 2.

Thanks. I have been trying 2 classes at state races and the few nationals I raced. I am going to finish the state series on both bikes, but park the 20" next year. For a guy, like nearly all of us, tyring to have a career, family, and other hobbies, it is nearly impossible to stay in the shape I would like for BMX.

BMX TEACHER
Chris, what will you do at the O-S race in Kettering, run 3 bikes? You better eat your Wheetys and bring more Oxy than usuall. I can't wait to see how this O-S race turns out.
bBoneau
By luck, I have vacation the following week. So I'm coming back to Ohio a day earlier to attend this race (and visit family of course!!). I'd mentioned before that I raced the novice class forever so many of you may not remember me, but I looked up to you fast older experts for what you could do out there on the track so it will be fun to see some familiar faces again.

I'm assuming that there are alot more pictures from the good ol days of Ohio BMX than what we've seen online here, so I was thinking it might be a good (fun) idea if people brought some photo albums of tracks and riders from back then. I've got several pictures from Hilliard, Kettering and Phase IV (Pataskala) and some zines made from the early 90's that came out of Ohio and will bring them along. Whatta ya guys think??
BillJones
Wow. The names that have been thrown around really bring back some memories!!

So there is a reunion on the 24th of August? I would love to attend but have to clear work schedule first. Is there an attendance list floating around?

From what I have read, the old school network is still around and doing well. I cant wait to catch up and exchange war stories.

BTW is racing still popular in Ohio? Is NBL still an organization?

Talk soon.

Billy,
Hey Chris Cline here. Yeah, BMX is still popular. IN fact, the over 30 classes are some of the biggest. And, yeah, the NBL is still around. A number of is in this thread have come back recently and have been racing NBL.

Steve Smith is the hero doing the work for the 8/24 event. Many on this thread are coming. It is in Kettering I think, but not where we used to race. Never been to the new place, so maybe Steve can add to this.

steve smith
Hey billy long time ,heard you were busting faces in japan in extream fighting ?
Its basically in the same exact area in the park in kettering .The track is about where the parking lot used to be .
The nbl is still around but more nbl tracks are in the north now- bob bruns took many of the nbls around dayton to the aba .
Def. would be cool to see you again billy
BMX TEACHER
I definately here ya on the photo albums. I'll bring mine, it has many pics from Bitd. Good idea.

Hey Steve,

My mom just gave me a tape labeled Marietta National May 25th 1986 and one of the very first races on the tape was you racing who I think is Shelby James. I am gathering all my old tapes to convert to DVD here in the near future. The only bad part is my mom cut to the next moto and I didn't get to see if you beat him or not. You guys were side by side coming out of the last turn. Do you want me to make you a extra copy? I think I already know the answer but I figure I would ask anyways. LOL
protour77
Steve,
I just watched it again and you are racing Shane Hatfield, not Shelby James. My bad!!
steve smith
Hopefully im beating shan -he was a thorn in my side in '89.He raced 25-30 nationals a year angry.gif

Heres annas reply- basically the same as beth klundt on the os race.BTW well have them set it up as a open class =no points

IF THEY ARE RACING A NON POINT RACE THE 30 DAY LICENSE IS OK. IF IT IS A POINTS RACE THEY WILL NEED TO BUY A FULL ABA LICENSE OR FOR NEW ABA MEMBERS IF THEY HAVE A CURRENT NBL LICENSE THEY CAN GET A FREE FULL ABA CONVERSION LICENSE FOR THE TERM OF THEIR CURRENT NBL LICENSE. THEY WILL NEED TO BRING THEIR NBL LICENSE SO WE CAN CONFIRM THE DATE OF THEIR LICENSE.

THE AUGUST 24TH RACE IS A STATE RACE QUALIFIER AT KETT. THE FINAL STATE RACE IS SUNDAY SEPT 21ST AT KETTERING.

WE THINK IT IS GREAT IDEA AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP. PLEASE CALL US IF YOU NEED MORE INFO 937-271-2733.

THANKS AGAIN

Hey anna ,
I oked the old school race with bob and been planning it since dayton indoor[about 4 months]
I planned it on the final at kettering to attract more riders to the state race to build the rider /moto count for dayton.I expect there should be at least 15-20 riders .Some want to race vintage bikes the others want to race current bikes thats why 2 classes .
They have been worried about your flier saying that you accept nbl and that when they show up you may not im wanting to confirm this. Many have never raced aba and havent raced nbl in over 15 years .They would want a 30 day lisc. due to no northern aba tracks up near akron. If you would get back with me asap so i can relay the info on to them so they can plan the trip with thier familys ...
Some of the names might ring a bell....
Kiniyalocts,heisler,nelson,raflik,carnes,cline,boring,merryman,werderman etc
Thanks steve smith
BillJones
OMG. I took the time to go though and read the 25 other pages. Its incredible to read so many posts that bring back so many stories. Some of them even bring back memories of certain smells, ie indoor tracks, dirt in different states, the food sold at events, and even some odd ones coming from the Whitmans van on the way down to Florida!!

Steve - Thanks for keeping up with this thread and your many posts. I didnt realize how much effort you have into this to date. I cant wait to catch up with you either in person or though email. Either way we cant loose. I will give you the lowdown on whats been happening over the last 20 yrs (I cant believe its been that long) only if I get your story as well!!

Chirs Kline - Wow again names and memories!! Thanks for giving some info on this.. Remember in the 80's there was talk of BMX in the Olympics? I have not been around BMX for such a long time...... But I have so many great memories on 80's BMX.

Congrats to all who are still in the game. I have played so many sports but BMX is still the one I wish I could have stuck with. We left OH and moved to upstate NY and that was the end of BMX but the beginning of wrestling, judo, ju-jitsu and MMA.

After moving to BC in 2004 I have bought three different BMX bikes but broke them all doing stupid things. I tell you if there were some tracks out here I would racing!! Its lucky for you guys that we moved to NY (LOL)! I want my state and national plates back!!

Unfortunately I can not upload any photos of the 80's, while I was living overseas my Mom's house caught fire and burnt what we had saved. That sucked but nobody was hurt so it ended well. If I make it out to Delco hopefully I can connect with some digital copies of the 80's!

I saw some mention of the Nards, what ever happen to them? Big and Lil were kind of like staples in BMX.

I didnt see under manufacturers Elf or Cycle-craft? Anyone remember those white and orange cyclecrafts that Whitmans gave us??

~Bill J.
billythekid
Bill,
I actually just sold my orange and white cyclecraft a few months ago on ebay to someone in Alaska for $300 bucks. It was beat to heck!!!

Hello Billy Jones! Remember the GPV races at forest ridge! I think I have some pics somwhere; I'll look for em. That was a great scene and fun.

Where you at in BC? go ride MTN Bikes at Whistler if you havn't already; it the best!

J-RAD!! Wow, its good to hear from you. The GPV races, I remember them well although I have to say I had forgotten about them completely! The competition part was great but it took a second place to the smak talking that followed. If you could find those pics would appreciate it. I am trying to piece that part of my back together (all BMX pix/items lost in fire) and surprise Mom. Not sure if you remember her but she is doing well in Idaho.

I'm on the North Shore in BC so if I wake up early I can make it to Whistler in about 1 hr or so. I have been up there for other things but no mountain biking yet. I would love to go however at present I don't have those kind of friends and the idea of riding at Whistler solo is not so attractive. But I will go at some point. I tell you what, stop by the house this evening we will catch up on old time then take off early tomorrow. My treat!

I do have a mountain bike and its relatively high end but its not for the trails around here. You need dual suspension with some good travel in the forks. About three weeks ago, on the spur of the moment, I had my wife drop me off at a mountain about 10 minutes away (Semour Mountain). I couldn't believe the things the clubs make down those trails. Man made contraptions galore! It was fun but again best to go with a buddy, the trails are pretty technical and nobody around when you bang your head on a tree could be good for the bears but bad for the family;-))

I remember the trips down to Fla, Sarasota, Olando in the Whitmans van or Winnebago. Lots of fun.

Are you planning to go to Delco this month?

~Billy
bBoneau
What's up Billy,

You and I don't know each other, but I've been talking to a buddy of mine about this get together at Delco. I was mentioning some of the people that have been posting on this forum and I mentioned your name. Anyway, the buddy of mine is Tim Brown. Don't know if you knew him but he said that he had always looked up to you, Chad Lumpkin and another guy (I forgot his name) and I think that he may have gone to the same high school as you (somewhere near Xenia maybe??).

No real point to that story, but myself, Tim Brown, Tom Cantrell, Scott Smallwood and maybe a few others will be coming out from the Columbus area. I contacted Mike McHue and got a confirmation that he and Greg Beem would be there also. And we're working on getting ahold of Terrible Terry Lee from Findlay. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!!

Hey, does anyone have a number for Billy Au?? I haven't seen that guy in awhile and he might enjoy something like this.
steve smith
coool ,i thought billy au was going to do the hamilton rebuild turns out the guys name is billy allen wrong guy!
Sounds like its going to be a good time .Wish lumpkin and cheevers could make it too.Someones gotta know how to get ahold of au?

Cheevers was the other guy I was trying to think of....Nate Cheevers, right??

Billy Au is working at the Mansfield Corrections facility. Chris Cline, I think knows how to get a hold of Billy.

I see Billy's parents multiple times a year and have his phone number. Worse case scenario, I have Rosie's. If we don't get a response to him about this thread, let me know.

I know I am coming in a little late on this whole cycle craft conversation, but I have to say that I still have my orange and white cycle craft from Whitmans.

I'm not a buckeye nor have I read this whole thread but I have some Greg Beem 411. He raced a dirt modified racecar for a few years around the KY/IN/OH area and kicked some tail doing that along the way. Google search him out and you'll find information and pics. Winter 2001 I was in Tampa at a race crewing for a driver. I looked over my shoulder and standing next to me there was Greg and his brother Dan. It was cool. They were down there watching races that winter. Next seen Greg in 2003 at Florence Speedway and then saw his name in racing results for a few years.

Someone else has posted and confirmed that other guys name is Nate Chever. We hooked back up a few years ago and talk about once a week, Lumpkin as well although i do speak to Nate more. Lumps is firefighter in Cincin and Nate is trying to get him to the reunion. Nate is planning on going but not racing.

Obviosly not one of my better races. Thats ok..... I enjoyed watching it. That was before our bright orange pants and the nicer jerseys and I was still in a full face helmet. The one thing I remember about hanging out in GA was a large group of us going out to eat and then someone decided to dine and dash (no names mentioned).First time I had ever seen that happen. Not too sure about sam and dan. Do you remember Big Nard cramming quite a few of us into a station wagon and driving us to Florida.
steve smith
Yes i remember something from just about every race we went to....I remember the pompano fla. race billy was reffering to he won one day i think -i remember him really destroying todd on video at that race both the pumpkin colors flying?-i was riding lil ryan bruns mini bike in between motos and missed one of my motos ...And mike k told big nard on me he was dissed off !-threw my bike in the trailer.... prolly only time i ever seen him loose it [even though i deserved it totally]I told bob bruns this story recently...

I remember Martin Day somewhat and I remember the NOrthside team. I also remember a Rob Williams who had a younger sister named RHonda.
And what about Chris Applegate or the Pennington brothers Rob and Chris?
As far as running the race, I will have to think about it. Thanks for offering to pay but I wouldnt let you do that. DO you remember Debbie Baker? I told her about the race but she is riding mountain bikes now and there is some big race that day that she has already entered.

OK this may seem like a strange question, but I want to make sure that I can use some "NEW" tires on my 1984 bike for this race? I really don't want to ride the track on the 1984 Comp IIIs. So, this is OK, right? What do you all that are racing think? Steve? As long as the rims are Old School I hope its OK with you guys. Thanks. Tommy.
steve smith
Some of those parts are very hard to find -its fine, dont sweat it tommy!

I hate to hear that greg..
Chris C.
Steve,
I propose the following, very loose, guidelines for the old school bike class. I have seen them used in other series and allow for some use of new parts - primarily older parts may not be available.

* Frame & Fork: 1990 or earlier
* Threaded headset/quill stem set-up
* No canti-style brakes (I believe they became standard in 1993).
* Flat pedals only.

Other than that, parts can be newer if safety is a concern. So, if a bike has newer rims, tires, or even cranks, no problem as they don't really make the old school thing. It really is the geometry differences on most pre-90 bikes, along with flat pedals and caliper style brakes that drive the old school flavor.

What do you think?
