Dunn, How's it going buddy. It's good to hear from you. Tom Cantrell told me that he's seen you and Jared out snowboarding this past winter or maybe the year before.
Anyway, here's what I remember from the Marietta weekend. I'm guessing this was very early 90's. I was sound asleep since I had plans on getting up super early the next morning to drive down to Marietta. I was woke up by my mom who told me there was someone named Sean on the phone. Half asleep, I had no idea who she was talking about. I answered the phone and was told by Sean that he and Carl Potts were driving to Marietta and their car broke down. They wanted to know if I could come pick them up and take them down with me and a couple buddies the next day. Thinking that they were somewhere in the Columbus area, I reluctantly said "yes". Further questioning revealed that they were actually in Springfield. Which from where I lived, was easily an hour drive. Not bad but it was the middle of the night.
Fast forward to the next day, and we're cruising down to the race. Sean and Carl in the back of my pickup truck with all the bikes and gear. After awhile, I hear mega-laughter coming from the bed of the truck. I glanced over my shoulder and remember seeing Sean halfway standing up wearing nothing but a sock wrapped around his "junk", and showing any passerby's or anyone else that would look. Funny stuff and a haunting image to this day!! lol..
I have no idea how I did in the race that weekend, but I do remember the drive...lol..
P.S. who is ricksimpson?? And how's the family??
you'll have to talk to Fecke to find out who Rick Simpson is. the family is doing well, how are you? any little ones yet? it seems like everybody left the 614, i feel like i don't know anybody in Columbus any more.

You're right. Alot of the 614 crew have moved off in all directions. I can tell you that Smallwood is still in town. He recently became a father and unfortunately, just suffered a bad wreck racing motorcycles (sport bikes, I believe). From what I'm told, he broke the c4 and c5 bones in his neck but is NOT paralyzed thankfully. This was about a week or two ago. Last I heard he was in good spirits. Hopefully I can get a home address soon if anyone want to send any get well messages.
Toby Hawk is still there. He teaches at a high school and I think still has some awesome trails in his backyard. Tom Cantrell is around also. Just started up his own printing company and is staying busy with that. I think Blatant Finger may have broken up. There is a new band featuring Smallwood on vocals, Fred Sarginder? on guitar and someone I don't know on drums. They're called The Garrison and pretty good from what I've heard. As for me, my girlfriend and I moved out to AZ in Nov. 06 to escape the winters. Our only little one is a boxer named Rocco. That's enough responsibility for us..lol!!
So how is Fecke, Beem, Landis, Josh (why can't I remember his last name..?..Green Auburn Josh), etc.

Maverick had it on his thoughts .This was mine : must be 30 years old and raced or lived in ohio in the 80s
1 moto for old guys on modern bikes
1 moto for old school guys on old school bikes
If there's more then 8 riders in each class then thier will be a semi/main .
Either the old school guys on old bikes can consist of the the b main ,or top 8 riders [4 from each class] is "a"main .Bottom 8 [4 from each class] consist of b main.or just keep the classes seperate?
Either way thier will be a frame for each class. You guys so far[chris ,maverick, protour look like the ones to beat cause your racing on a steady basis.Im not racing in either class it will be fun enough just seeing all you guys plus ill be racing the st race on my cruiser.
Personally i like the idea of keeping the classes seperate -rather then top riders from each being the a main..

my bike is mid school, My helmet is old school, And I'm not getting any younger. Sounds fun but, Race them all together and award them seprately. Some Classic old school might just whip the new clipped in guy with his talent on loan from God! (won't be me!!!! :}). I would still run two mains just for fun. It's all about the fun of competition. Let the racing determine the placement no questions then on who still has it! I've put my self on a new oreo diet. I swiched from double stuffed to reg. stuffed, and 2% milk to 1%. Can we run any plate we want like one of our old school state plates? or do we have to run our current plate?
maverick
Jun 30 2008, 06:22 PM
The format I was talking about was everyone race together no matter what type of bike you have since this would be considered an open wheels class. Depending on the number of riders you have break them up randomly into groups of 8. For example if 16 guys/gals show up split into two groups of 8. The top 4 from each group would make up the "A" main and the 8 that didn't make the main would run the "B" main.
And if anyone has the inside track to winning a frame it's Steve since he has the first straight pull.
I plan on running my old school zeronine mini plate

Ok ,i dont think the clips thing is a issue last time i checked none of us are running them and if we were i really dont think wed beat them if they were running flats .As far as im concerned clips are out ,but i really dont think anyone will show up with a set ill let you guys call that one .
Yes any # plate goes this is our thing we can score it ourselves and since the winner gets everything hes the only # that matters .You can run both classes if you like ,i think it should be seperate instead of top of each .
Must be 30 years old or raced in ohio in the 80s
#1 old school bikes any size also cept mtbs up to 1989 moto #1 winner takes all B=main event if needed .
#2Old school riders -any bike newer then 99 clips optional 20',24',pit bike ,26 [sorry no mtbs]A= main if needed. This will be the ripper race grand prizewith the ohio state #1 -remember plate comes back to next years race!
I really dont want to change alot on the rules n stuff cause there will be someone not happy [especially some that critisize and dont even plan on racing the darn race]
AND FOR THE RECORD IM NOT RACING THIS EVENT THIS IS YOUR GUYS REWARD FOR KEEPING BMX ALIVE !Along with all the memories you guys have and created .Im hoping some of you keep on racing and get your kids, cousins, family into it too.If this event is pretty big ill keep on doing these kinds of things [even do them in columbus or akron too]
If it works out good maybe we can have another race at dayton indoor or columbus indoor in the winter and the champ can run his frame/plate like the old days ?
If you got the wheaties in your britches the lil deatails wont matter .
Heres the holy grail prize that goes with the ripper to the a main winner:

I believe the euro turn went bye bye some time in 84?We had one at our first track in middletown too.I raced the 81 or 82 wos also i didnt make the main or they didnt trophy thru 8th from what i remember ...The trophys were taller then me on a semi rig , i remember the se van rolling in friday eve ,and i also remember the line of porta johns were over 30 long those were the days

I think the good riders today would figure it out and love it - eventually. It's the kids are rely on glass smooth tracks, asphalt berms, and clips to ride that would have a hard time.
A few of us have had this conversation at the tracks in the last year - about new and old school riders and tracks. The old school tracks were visually more tame (except the pro section at the Grands !!), but required more power and spin since there were fewer jumps. Many of today's kids are insanely technical - the manuall is a very good skill and hard to master, but is necessary on many tracks. I still think the best riders today would have been good in the 80s and the best riders in the 80s would be good today because good riders learn to ride what they are riding.
That said, a decent rider from the 80s (without a time machine) can struggle on today's tracks. I am a perfect case study. Ugh. Can go fast enough to be competitive, but the good riders just kill me on some of the jumps - I am average at manualling and lower than average at jumping . . . but higher than average with fear of crashing. LOL!
I really like the look of the Hamilton pics - too bad it's nearly 3 hours from home.

I remember the tara gate systems jrad and seeing the name on the gates everywhere.
Hamiltons track is great it just needs dragged and dragged to get smooth its app. 45 minutes to a hour from ketterings track and has a state qualifier the day before the oldschool race if anyone wants to race/ride the track.
I think some of the tracks make it very tough to pass and come from behind ,you dont see many of the passes as you did bitd. When a rider gets back in the pack after the first turn its very hard to gain ground on riders on todays tracks to weed thru the pack. Not to mention many of the guys that do it "just for fun /exersise" arent doing it much anymore mainly its factory backed declassed former pro riders.
I think a brown retro euro turn thats brown /paved would be cool and non skid .Remember the launch /soup bowl stow had in its second turn?

Yes i remember stu's mountain .I had alot more pics and some from stow but the fence made many of mine horrible pics.I remember the dubs too but cant remember what they called them they had a silly name too.
Funny- look at the step up at hamilton and how there was no lip it was so gradual no wonder we couldnt jump squat back then or if we did put a lip on the only jump in the straight we landed on flat ground.
Chris ,im not much of a jumper either -buts its all coming back all at once- im loving to jump again .I went down and chased tommy board at louisville and i had to jump there to even get around the track.
Whats really crazy is seeing these kids transfer from the second part of a step into a roller on a rythm :jumping down.
I tried this in the rythm at l ville and its so unordinary but its fast outta thier step in thier rythm.I still have to warm up to jumping i dont have the faith to leap a big double right off the bat especially on 1st lap.
Oh yeah i got a email from smallwoody he says hell try and come to the os race and hes doing pretty well considering .He did say he had a hard time typing with broken fingers ...

Reading what everyone is saying, I am in agreement that the Cruiser is the safer bike. Since I havn't been on a 20" for about 4 years, I have decided to ride this JMC cruiser at the race. Original Plate, Demco pedals (bought new shoes), Bullseye hubs on Araya Rims. This race should be fun. Who all are comming and what are you going to ride. Lets see them. I would like to know what I'm going to be up against. LOL Tommy
