Hello friends!!!!! ...seeing this thread pretty much forced me to register. I remember most everyone that has checked in here. My first race was at Ft. Hamilton in 79 and ever since, BMX has been a huge part of my life. I havn't raced in a while, but do ride as much as possible It's great to see all the names & pics from the old days; I'll see if I can't dig up something to contribute.

Good to hear from you jared ,also good to see dk doing some local support [seen josh smith is riding for you guys and heard a rumor of another ]you and the dayton crew should all come out to the state finals and hang /race .When i saw sean dunn he said hes been riding with you some here and there, and i chatted with john fecke online about a year ago .Bmx is much more fun when your friends are inolved id say thats 100% why alot of us never came back after many of us dropped out in the 90s cause noone we knew was still racin. You guys would crap if you seen how many racers winning the nationals right now are old school guys or 2nd generation kids of bmx parents from the 80s/90s .

What's up Jered? Good to see that you joined the site. Maybe you can convince some of the old Dayton gang to get on here also. It's been forever since I've heard from you, Beem, Fecke, Dunn and who could ever forget Ryan Nesbitt. Some of my greatest memories are from hanging out in Dayton with you guys and I still tell stories about the month that I worked at DK...hehe...man, Charlie sure made me nervous when he would come back to the machine shop!!
I'm sure that you remember Tim Brown, right? He came out to AZ and visited a couple of months ago. And Andy Johnson came out a short time later. We were going through my old zine collection and came across an issue of PUNCH.
I hope you, Nikki and the family are doing well. Maybe one day I'll buy a scanner and start posting some pictures and other funny stuff I can dig up. Later, Brian Boneau

Does any one rememer the EBA? eastern bicycycle association. They had their Grands in Niagra Falls. Wooden Jumps & Coke in the turns. Just like Ft. Wayne Indoor nbl, without the poles everywhere. I beat Donnie Hier for 4th in our semi one year. He came with me to the race. That was a quiet ride home.

E-mail me at tlyons@sebikes.com & give me your addy. I will have it shipped to you.
Have fun @ the race.
Oh, and my most memorable race @ Kettering was the 1982 State finals there. I was up for #1 in 10 expert & my wheel slipped in the gate. I told the starter to hold the gate, but he still dropped it. I cussed at him & took off & got like 7th & #2 Ohio. Later, I found out that my 10yr old self cussed out Charlie Danishek as he was running the gate that day. Whoops!....

Good deal, thats very cool Todd thanks !
Since im not footing the bill my big ask is in the mix cc your gonna have to earn it lmao!
I agree JR Big Nard would be best choice .I was accually thinking of him alot this past weekend as jeff upshaws dad was announcing the regional at cleves and he reminded me alot of big nard.He works /owns the blockbuster near both our works jr on pioneer ill try and stop in there and at least get his #
We were going over old times at woodbridge and the guy who beat Todd for #1 that year was Jay Favorite and he quit after the state final that year -but it didnt matter todd took it the next 2 years straight he was on fire !
I also remember that year you swinging off the vine into the blue pool in the creek at kettering remember that?I wasnt allowed to do that either ....

Unfortunetly yes,it will be ran at a regular race as a regular moto. You will sign up as normal and well just tell bob how we want it ran.I think if you been out of the aba for awhile hell honor the free liscense for the length of your current nbl liscense.

Jun 6 2008, 08:11 PM
Dont kid yourself chris i seen you at the columbus indoor ,and on mavericks video at the state race you guys both are fast. You 2 have the most seat time and are shoe -ins to win the frame .Im gonna come down and hang and get some lap time with you guys at the cleves st race but dont plan to finish the series just race the cleves race .The aba series is more important to me -me and my boy raced the first race at dayton indoor .The whole 2 racers 2 entrys and trying to hit nationals is tough so the nbl is out for me at state level.
Most of you guys will be able to get a 30 day liscense for 20.00 idk if greg will ?the aba honors new members with nbl liscenses so many of you will only need to merely pay to sign up if you have a current nbl lisc.
Id kill to get greg beam back in it again too he was bringing the heat when i quit in 93-besides being one of the coolest racers from ohio ,suzie lavan says she talks to him regularly.

I hardly think Bob will honor the whole Nbl/ABA license deal. He won't honor the ABA first race free coupons. But if you can get that deal to work I guess you can count me in.

If he dont i will make a stink in front of everyone and also boycott aba .Im doing this to try and HELP bmx and dayton bmx so it will only hurt him if he doesnt .
He told me we could do whatever as far as a cruiser open /old school race etc.i didnt ask about the honor system on the liscense deal -ive only been to 1 race cause the outdoor seasons been so late due to rain ive only seen him 1 time since end of april.
I doubt if he will honor someone that held a aba lisc. within a few years its mainly to attract new members -so greg may have a hard time .The 30 day deal is mainly for new members too.
If the $ is too much just come and hang out im getting hyped up to see some of youall i havent seen in 15 + years .

it almost seems like it would make for a better event to do it when there isn't a race. just turn it into an entirely older guys event, more of an outlaw race, which also gets rid of the whole NBL/ABA issue. I believe that you can reserve the Delco track for an event by going to the city parks office and doing so, or at least that is what i have been told. If we can't use the track at Delco maybe we could use the Dayton NBL track, they don't have many races going on and the track has gotten a ton of work done to it, albeit a much longer track which may not help the cause of some of the older guys...lol. But anything is better than nothing and this is your deal Steve i am just tossing a few thoughts that myself and a couple other guys have spoken about. thanx

I understand what your saying rick. The whole aba /nbl thing in my opinion shoulda never even came about -our tracks in dayton area shoulda stayed nbl 15 years ago imo ,but stuff happens im not sour about it if bob hadnt done what he done bmx WOULD be dead in dayton .I went to lousville yesterday and thats the only track in the whole state of ky now !
I personally know of a few members in here that that dont care if i was not on this earth but stuff happens- time changes people and you move on [if i offended anyone in the past im sorry-im still a dilk heads]im a dad now and i try to be a decent human being .I know a few rumors of why the tracks are aba and honestly i dont care ,i also dont care that i have to have a seperate liscense to run locals but im racing again almost every weekend .If your worried id call bob on the dayton bmx websites hotline about the liscence issues .This being said kettering is where alot of our memories were [besides west jeff and its gone as well as marietta]at so thats why i thought it would be best choice ,but we can have the next one anywhere ?I also thought it would be neat for these people to get props for starting what has evlolved- by the present / future bmxers out there .Otherwise we could all just meet at hooters on wing night for some beer ....
To be very frank and i hope im very wrong ,i dont expect a record attendance .I hope everyone on here comes at the very least and it would be great to see all of you[successful event] !
If anyone has any ideas this is all for bmx and you guys and the future bmxers like my son.

I don't wanna jump on your thread and spoil anything, but, if you think Bob may give you some problems with the ABA licensing i could probably set it up to be run at Heer Park in Columbus without any worries with the licensing issues. We have run an old school race there before at our vintage shows, and, only required non-licensed riders to sign an insurance waiver and a $5 entry fee to race that moto. Like i said, don't wanna jump your thread, just wanted to throw that option out there for you too.

Hey Steve I think you missed my main point which was mostly to get the ABA/NBL out of the picture. I like the Idea of a race or some kind of event at the track, but i think it would be better served by being more lowkey. Like it or not some people just won't show up if it is held during a race at Delco, not saying it's right or wrong just the simple truth. And by doing it as an outlaw event you open it up to more guys simply by reducing the costs. It also opens up more options when it comes to something like having a BBQ and some adult beverages. The event can still be at Delco, as I said before I am pretty sure anybody can run an event on the track they just have to go through the city. Just some thoughts I have discussed with a few of the other guys I know from the area, but after all it is your deal so it is up to you. Thanx and good luck

You'd have to bring your own ram and starting system for the gate, because I *think* that belongs to Dayton ABA and not the City of Kettering. Bob and Anna keep that in the trailer and set it up before each event. (note: I am not commenting on this idea one way or another, just throwing out this info)
I probably won't be there for the event. I think I am done with BMX.

Hey Steve, Ryan Wuerdeman here. I finally made some time to put a post out there.
Hey it was great running into you at Cleves. Wish I could have caught up with you the second day to chat some more, but by the time I showed up (about noon) everything was pretty much packed up. I'm not used to Nationals (even Regionals) being over by noon. That kind of shocked me.
But yeah, this site is great. I just spent hours reading most of these post. Definitely brings back some great memories, even just hearing (reading) some of these names.
You know I look back now and think how lucky I was to grow up in Ohio with being into bmx. There were soooo many great riders to come out of this state. And I was fortunate enough to get to see them all ride on a consistent basis and "try" to learn from them. I dont even know if half the people on here would remember me, because I was a few years younger (34 now, ouch!!) then the people I see posting on here. I was the kid from Cincinnati who was pretty much attached to Little Nard's hip through the 80's, well except for when we were racing, then I would be attached to his back wheel. Damn he was fast!
But guys like: Mike & Tom K, Steve Smith, Bill Au, Todd Lyons you guys were my idols back then.
Hey if anyone is interested, I just happend to stumble upon a video on youtube which was titled "1986 NBL Grands 12X", which was my class back then. So I contacted the "poster", and it ended up being a guy named Simpong Wongpumin. He was a super fast kid from California that Nardie and I used to race. So he posted mine and Nardie's first moto out on youtube for me. I'll have to go and find the link again, and post it out here.
But anyway he said he has the entire 1986 Grands on tape, all ages all classes. So if anyone wants to see any of their motos, I guess even mains from that race, let me know and I'll shoot him an email and see if he can find them.

Steve, It seems that getting an Old School Race together is more difficult than expected. Maybe just setting a track, date and time would be the way to go. Show up and tell the Track Operator we want to have our own race. See how many of us are able to attend and go from there. It really just sounds like fun to me. I'm in for when/ where ever it happens. Tommy

Its going to be at kettering and at the state finals aug24th [sorry guys i allready posted it elsewhere]
I really dont want to get everyone red in the face by expressing my opinion on the past few posts ,but we need to realize bmx is dyeing people. The main focus was my old friends but a second reason was to get more racers -either former bmx'rs or thier children.Sooner or later the volunteers arent going to be willing and i see it now!We have volunteers we need more faces. And its not just dayton louisville has the very best of everything and they still only had 40motos at thier state race sat[yes i attended]
Many of you havent raced in 15 + years and some never even raced aba at all so im pretty confident you can get a 30 day lisc.
Others who have raced nbl and currently hold a nbl liscence can get a aba waiver [or vise versa ]i know i got my nbl for free =1 yr too[believe me they tried to shaft me on the lisc but i insisted at the track i was TOLD IT WAS FREE IN A E MAIL FROM THE TRACK-INDY.
On a lil different note ill say i dont make alot of money at my job ,i did race every weekend at dayton indoor i could to help support my local track -i seen a handfull of racers who came in - week in and week out and only practiced and left [didnt pay squat]i dont believe this helps bmx grow .And no these werent teenagers.
I hope everyone reading this comes to the oldschool race and if anyone needs $ to race ill do what i can to help out .The next one can be at shadylane or heer park i think that would be cool and ill help plan /support it too.

Man you do have a memory. How in the world did you remember my neighbor? Yeah it was Jim Kropfeld. He used to race Miss Budweiser (hyroplane boat). Super cool guy. After having many close calls from flipping that boat, including breaking his neck once, he lost his battle with cancer in 1999. Life's kind of strange sometime's huh?
But yeah his son, Rob Kropfeld was the first person I knew who raced BMX. I remember multiple times coming home from a weekend of racing, I'd be out in the back yard cutting the grass and I'd see Mr. Kropfeld, and he'd say "Hey Ryan, how did you do this weekend", I'd tell him and then I would ask "what about you", but actually I'd already knew he had won (most likey) because I'd probably had watched it on ESPN back at the hotel the night before, haha.
Yeah, I havent seen Pat or Andy Schollenburger (spelling?) in a long long time. There's a bunch of old friends including them I'd like to look up: Rick Hiesler, Tony Cruz, Tim Benning, little and Big Nard, man could go on and on......
Hey Eddie Nelson, I dont know if you remember me, but remember you used to hang with Rick and Tim, right? Any idea where those guys are at or up to?
The only people I've kept in touch with over the years is Jimmy and Susie Levan (Louisville riders, now in WA and NJ). I used to get Mike Lausman updates through Jimmy, although I havent actually talked to him in years. But since Jimmy moved to Seattle, I have no idea what's up with him.
I dont know if you guys know about Jimmy's accident, but I just saw him a few weeks ago and he looks and sounds great! I swear when I got that call, I thought he was dead. Thank god I thought wrong. Susie is actually hooking me up with an old S&M frame, so I'm trying to build myself a 20 inch again. But man my parts are seriously anceint!! haha.
Ok so I'm new poster on here, and I'm already long winded huh.

Oh yeah, one more quick little note while I'm on a roll. I read Todds post about James "Deuce" Good looking him up and giving him a ring. So right after I read that, I'm talking to Jimmy Levan on the phone and he was like "your never going to believe who looked me up and gave me a call out of the blue".
So if you know "Deuce" he's on the prowl looking people up. Man that was one funny dude!!!

The old school race at DELCO is cool with me. I'm planning on being there. I always liked that track as a kid and since getting back into BMX 2 years ago, I've tired to hit all the tracks that are still running from BITD.
Steve- I may have the most time back on the bike but I have been taking to easy this year on the racing, so I'm no lock on the bike but it sure would be nice to win something.

a few me pics:

1980 my 1st national in Henderson KY, made the main and got 10th! Bike:White Webco professional, you can see Peddlers Shop (Trotwood OH.) Brian Jones #72 behind us; he was fast!

Lap #2 at Indy indoor local race; wearing the 1st Whitman's Vera's gear, Bike: Thruster Vanishing Point w/Tange TRX fork.

1982 Catching some air at Kettering. Bike:CW / Tinker Juarez gave me his visor!

Miami FL. DK's Matt Ling & myself getting beat by one of Mel's Angles; Bike:Kuwahara When we first arrived we could not beleive they had concrete on the turns & jumps!

B'ville OH. Whitman's Tom K. & Myself; maybe a State race????

Whitman's team rig at Springfield OH. L to R is: Myself, Mike Hail & Mark Hayes. Mark and I went to school together at Beavercreek, in 7th grade we made up a bmx team (just our friends) and talked Whitmas into having a team; little did we know how genorous Whitmans would be and where it would take us: great memories and good times!

Those are some great pictures jared thanks for sharing ,The one with the motorhome is kinda a tear jerker man i miss the whitman days .You talk to supposed factory sponsered riders today and many dont get the support finacially or morally as we did from whitmans .
I still remember all the video games they used to haul around too.
P.s. Springfield had a tunnell and you can see it behind the trailer in the pic man that thing was hard to climb at age 12.
Im hoping to make the state race ,my son has a t ball game at 1:30 sat so we may have to split early -maybe i can run the motos or something?but ill make it sunday

Those are some good pictures Jared. I'll have to get on the ball about scanning and posting pictures I have of myself and brother racing.
Steve-hope you can make for Sat just remember that the State Series races are run under local rules therefore you only have a main if there is more than 6 riders in a class.
I'm also thinking of heading down to Louisville afterwards for the night race

Hey Ryan... and everyone.. This thread is awesome great to listen to all the stories.. Hey Ryan Tim Binning and I still hang out all the time i was his best man at his wedding.. he just had is first baby about a year ago. Steve Im going to try my best to make it aug 24th sounds awesome. I'll talk to Tim and Mike K. she if they are up for it... My niece is getting married this Sat. but I might try to make it to cleaves for abit that morning.. hope to she some old faces.....
