Dude...you are a TV celebrity! Soon you will be moving to Hollywood!

So is this a re-run or something else?
burlyearley
its a rerun with updates. they wanted to know what has happened to me after the last one. and the AP came and did a story on me for this week. so lots going on. got at least 2 years of work ahead of me right now. and more time to get back in shape and ride my bmx bike. i often wonder what became of frank henrys cyc pikes peak bike? like to have that one.

Mike Early,

How the hell are you? I saw the first 60 Minutes show. Sorry to hear about all that. Tough stuff. Hope you are doing well/better.

I was going to post this in its own thread, but since I started my racing in OH, I'll add it here. . .

I did my first race in about 25 years last night at the Orange YMCA (Orange, CA). I raced on my 1980 Torker L.P. Long and wore vintage Torker gear.

Watch me race the kids in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArYpyCP8dRE

As the only 41+, I got stuck racing the 17-18 experts. Not sure if that's better than racing Stu, who races at the Orange Y, Eddy King, who started practicing there, and the no-name guys who I saw beat Stu a few weeks ago, or not. No matter, I'm just there flying the OS colors and having fun.

My puny road-racer arms were killing me after just three practice laps and two laps of racing. In the third moto I could barley lift the front wheel. In the main, I suffered even more. My roadie legs were good though.

Video is my first and best moto.

I'm in the yellow, in case you weren't sure.

Thanks to Greg/Huntin4BMX for the video. His kids got 1st and 2nd.

Quote of the night: A kid (15 or 16 years old) was looking at me in my Torker gear. He was chatting with his friends. I overheard him say, "That's old school. That's so tight. That's really old school. Like when my dad raced."

Cheers,

Michael Gamstetter

Just posting to keep this post updated.... hey!!! you '80s Ohio racers that raced at the 2009 grands, post some pix for the non-Facebook peeps... that will be something to talk about...
Chris C.
Tim, you don't have to ask me twice. LOL. The photogs got some pics of me from the Grands this year and a couple of them are pretty cool. Thanks to JRod, Klicks By Kris, and Mike Carruth.

I raced the UGP 30+ Open. Went 1-1-3 in motos (no points = slight chill in 3rd moto). Won the semi, and got 3rd in the main.
Also raced 35-39 cruiser. Went 2-2-2 in motos, no main (that class is rediculously fast). Ended National 16. No complaints from a guy on flats.

Here are a few pics - racing the 26.

Some of the others at the Grands who are active in this thread . . . Brian Wick, Greg Boring,Steve Smith, Lisa Vonderahe Motley. Tommy Riggle and Jim Hill also represented OH old school.

Just wanted to let the old school guys know that Don Hire was seriously hurt today. He wrecked and the fall caused a laceration on his liver and kidney. We had to help him get home from the Heer part state qualifier. He has lots of internal bleeding. He is on his way to surgery. I am sure he and his familiy could use your prayers and support. I will keep you updated as I am.

Thanks again for the update Dave. I just read this over on the Ohio NBL site. I didn't see the wreck but though that he even raced the third moto. Thanks to you and his friends for helping him out and getting him home. Best wishes, Doni.

Thats horrible news .
Thanks for being there to help him dave [i know what its like to be alone at the races].
Doni and i talked several times at the akron national -hes getting back up to speed fast i hope you get better soon i enjoyed talking with ya and meeting your kids doni.
Musta been hectic for the lil ones ,if you get to read this keep us posted dave/ doni if theres anything we can do.
Ohio25B
Cool site. I raced Ohio during the 80's - Tom Blackburn. I think Jimmy "Crab" was remembering me in his post and another friend sent me the link to the site. I still have one of my GT's and a 24" profile that my kids play with now. Spent a lot of time at local tracks like Hilltop and Stow getting ready for the states back then.

I talked to Don today. God blessed him with no surgery! Had the pleasure of clear fluids today. SHould be going home tomorrow for about 6 weeks of recovery.

On a side note. Any old schoolers remember Scott Zitchem or Tom the Goose Gosorn. I have been talking to those guys about them racing Ohio in the 80's.

BMX TEACHER
Anybody from the dayton area remember Mike Hoover? He just got back into BMX this year riding a cruiser (of course). Seen him at the State finals last weekend, really looked good on that bike. I was able to beet him in the main but it was a good race. He should be really good if he rides all winter in the Indoor track. I'm taking the winter off this year and will se you all in the spring. Would like to let my body heal completely before taking on next season. Tommy

anybody have any more pics/info on this race?

Tony Ooten , can anyone tell me a little bit about this OHIO racer. I kinda know the basics but that's about it. I was told he raced for Factory Schwinn etc. I think he held some state plates etc. Did he ever race pro ? Was he factory Schwinn etc. I purchased his old red Sting and some other misc apparel from another collector who had some pretty good stories but just digging for info.

Steve,
Not sure what happened to the Davis'(Chuck and Scott I think), they lived in Beavercreek across the street from John Caupp(sp?), he always rode GHP colors. My Dad use to work with the Davis' Dad on base but that was BITD, not sure if they were military and got transfered or what. I use to ride with them occasionally tho? J-rad might know since he's a Beavercreek local? I always wondered what ever happen to the Harry's(KC Racing), always very cool people and Brock had style for days for a little dude!

11o is Tony Ooten, or Tony "Double O - ten". He raced all over Ohio, the Jox-Jag Worlds and much of the mid-west probably more than that but my memory is not that good.

Hey everybody, I just ran across this thread so here is another old-school 80's Ohio BMX'er checking in. I don't know if any of you remember me but I am Ray Conn. I raced 11-13N and 13-17X. My Sister Dawn Conn (#1 Ohio, #2 Nat' - early - Whitmans, K.C. Racing,,, later - Factory ELF) raced too.

I had a lot of fun with a few of you guys in here. I was part of the previously mentioned DELCO lake jump episode too. Which I think was after the first NBL National Race there. I/we had some serious fun at all the Ohio tracks though. Who can forget the War of the Stars races, Hilliard indoors for the winter, Marietta, Springfield, Ft. Hamilton, Brookville, DELCO, Jeffersonville, London, and the rest.

And what about those National Races. The Columbus Nationals (held in the Marriot?) was awesome. Memphis, Bradenton FL, Fort Lauderdale, Homestead, Louisville, Pittsburg, Fort Wayne, the Cool-Tool Nats in upstate NY, and St. Louis.

And speaking of St. Louis, I recall getting DQ'ed by the officials there because I had my KX 80 with me and we were getting crazy between motos. And one of you guys was riding it with me. I am wanting to say it was Todd Lyons but I can't recall exactly.

Oh, and regarding the Memphis Nationals. Does anybody remember that horrible crash and very visible compound fracture? I can still remember hearing the bone snap and that kid screaming over all the noise at that indoor track. At the time it really spooked me because I watched it happen a few moto's before me.

And what about Waterford Oaks MI? That race was always a riot. I recall getting my behind kicked by my Dad for getting sun burnt, and barely being able to race, at that wave pool that was beside the track. *lol*

And then there was Asheville NC. Man that track was fast! And what about the Nationals inside Charlotte Motor Speedway? Awesome!

As for the people mentioned in this thread, I recall most of you/the names mentioned. And when I can dig some more of the "memories" out of the back of my brain, I'll post them up. Especially the stories from the National races. I recall some wild times hanging out with the Ohio Crew at those races...

Ray Conn

ETA: As for a "where are they now". As a young adult I got bored with making cars in Dayton and joined the U.S. Army. My last assignment was to Fort Lewis Washington. And I liked the area so much that when I got out I decided to stay here. So I am out in the boonies close to Mount Rainier National Park these days.

As for my Sister Dawn, she is doing really well. She is married, has a Daughter, and lives in Beavercreek.

Hey Ray,
Welcome to the site! Of course we remember you! LOL Dawn showed up at the first 80's reunion at Delco so it was good to catchup! That's cool you were stationed at Ft. Lewis, my lil' sister and her husband were stationed there and I went to visit! Seattle-Tacoma area is very cool! Billy Jones is close to you across the border in Vancouver! I remember almost all the nationals you mentioned, we all had so much fun back then in our BMX world and am always glad to hear about any of you guys! How is your Mom (Penny?), I remember she use to crack me and Bill up when he got his license and we rolled his Fiat X19 over to the house, the good old days! Anyway, A LOT of the 80's guys seem to be toying with the idea of racing around a track again and some seem to have never quit! Hope to see you when you make it back this way or maybe we can meet at Bill's and go snowboarding in Whistler? Take care!

Nice list of names you got there Lisa. Hows the racing in Fla. these days? Would be nice to catch up at a race sometime. Kelly says hi also. Tommy

Agreed, that list of names brings back some great memories. Makes me wish I had a tape of Bob Lyons and Nardie announcing a state race to hear them and more called out over a PA again.

I have so many stories i would bore everyone to death...
I do remember the springfield track well they was the only ohio track with a tunnel from what i remember.I drove around the silloette of it a while back in my car on the way home from columbus laugh.gif
West jeff ,marietta, stow ,brookfield...Was telling the guy at columus last weekend about racin in madison[columbus]in 82 they used 5 fire trucks to water track!
Bob said marietta just got plowed several years ago bummer...Didnt hear about dj bummer!
I talked to mike and toms dad a few weeks ago they are doing well with kids -tom jr had some kind of tumor or something and lost hearing or vision from what i heard but is doing ok now?

The # of nat'l champions and quality riders from 80-90 in ohio is staggering even from dayton area too even today per riders out here theres a handfull of up and coming superstars -must be something in the ohio water..Hilliard indoor was like a small national nowdays as far as motos and comp.
This outta be fun to hear others talk about what i witnessed first hand in ohio...

ok, you guys got me on and registered. my father Joe Deem built and operated marietta bmx track (not pioneer trails) this one was across the creek from that track. he started this track probably around 1975, im going to get the exact dates. we ran nba, then later switched to nbl. my race age in 1975 was 7yrs. im going to get some history from my mom from these days. we had them all at our track.ill post it later, for now i'll say we had lynn kastan and his bmx "crew" come to our track with some fast guy named Stu Thomsen. and Jason Mcnutt and i wore out many bmx bikes. theres alot more for those of you may be interested. Brian Deem.

That Marietta track was one of the greatest, what fun it was.
