Here are the specifics of Ant Dog's KOS series!! I found them on Museum and have posted them on the Ohio NBL site (months ago).
King of old School
Rider Requirements & other info
NBL license is required.
Helmets are required.(open face with mouthgaurd is allowed)
there is no age limit for this series. anyone from age 7 to 70 is welcome.
there will be a 10.00 entry fee. With all fees going toward the year end prizes. 100 percent goes back to the riders.
the top 3 will receive number plates and prizes.
This will be an open wheel class 20 24 and 26 inch if you have it.
bike requirements
SINGLE SPEED BIKES ONLY
NO CLIP PEDALS
NO THREADLESS HEADSETS
NO V BRAKES OR CANTI LEVER STYLE BRAKES
NO CASSETTE HUBS
(UNLESS THET ARE OLD SCHOOL SHIMMANO style HUBS)
NO CARBON FIBER PARTS
SCORING
This series will be run with the nj state series. We will use the nbl scoring system. But at the state finals it will be triple points. There will also be a show and shine at each event. If the person wins the show and shine and the race WITH THE SAME BIKE that person will receive 200 bonus points toward the year end title.this part of the event is only for bikes that are being raced. You are welcome to bring a bike and show it.
Savings bonds will be awarded as part of the year end prizes.
This class is for the guys who want to have some fun and show off their bikes.
If enough people want to come and try this ill get a new old school setup frame /brakes etc ..If theres enough with newschool bikes and still want to come thats cool too.Maybe the total old school can be a akron thing after it grows or next year?
More then anything a picnic is in order so dont feel obligated to race if you want to come out and visit thats cool too.
Btw kettering is aba now also.
Thanks to antdog for sending info.

Steve,
If you run into Doug Zimmer anytime soon, tell him I said Hello. We hung around each other up in Toledo when I was going to college there. We had some good times riding up there on campus and some local spots. Man he had a weird living situation up there with an old girlfriend.
I am up for the racing. Let me know what I can do.

A way to get around the need for a license is to have the renunion during an ABA "Race for life". None needed at one of these races, anyone can race. Just a thought.

Doug would be easy to track down .His dad still has a office next to the kettering track .He was out at the finals in 2000 when i went with my brother in law im sure he still stops at the track from time to time.
We need a few more entrys to make it worth a plan, but Bob said we can do whatever we want [didnt run the retro lake jump idea by em yet

]
If anything we can have a class of 85 open for all of us old schoolers bob will ham it up for us too .He gives us oldschoolers special props/recognition when we race even though he shouldnt.
Bmx teach ,they just had one for lukemia at the redline cup race a few weeks ago.

Hey all, new to the board here. I too raced here in Ohio back in the day. I lived in a town near Marietta named Belpre. I remember the Hines Brothers quite well. Actually, my uncle used to work for their father (Tom) at the Boat Shop.
I raced at:
Marietta
Hilliard
Akron
Christmas National 1986 (Battelle Hall)
Vienna, WV
Ripley, WV
Key names I remember from back in the day are:
Todd, Tony, and Troy Hines
Rod and Barry Boice
Scott McMahon (from WV I think)
Drew Smithberger
Jason McNutt
Todd Wettle
Geoff & Ben Schenkel - Their parents ran Pioneer Trails (Marietta) back in the day
Todd Lyons
Cool that Todd Hines' son races for SE. I saw that awhile ago, but I wasn't sure which Hines brother was the parent.
This is a really cool thread.
Thanks,
Chad

Ok what about these rules for the old school race .
So you raced in the 80s and had a few issues at state races such as never being able to snap on doug zimmer -got swooped in the last turn by one of the kinyalocts or could beat chris cline on 20' but not on cruiser or-got cut off down the starting hill by doni hier or-couldnt manage to beat troy hines on his local track at state final or qualifier? What about if you made the mains at the finals and the last 2 cards to be drawn were #4 and #8 and todd lyons peeked at the cards and you got #8 OR if you did great and won everything but still after your main and winning - billy ross crossed the line into nikki daneshek and tiffany reddys arms? Heres your solution :
Race the old school 80s reunion at kettering if your not yellow?
Rules :
Run what you brung 20',24, clips ,mags ,coaster brakes whatever BUT?
If you run coaster brakes, mags or say over 225 lbs OR havent raced in more then 10 years you get a 25 ft shorter track.
The guys who still race get the b moto the guys who havent get the a moto.
Todd lyons automatically gets lane 8 unless doni hier shows then he gets #7 hier gets the uci paint all the way down the first straight.
No gate officials :got a wicked sling shot /or wanna grind the chain on your start go for it!
The guy with the longest layoff gets lane #1 in a moto
You must be over age 30 and preferrably rode in ohio sometime between 80-89
Jim wahl can race but has to sidehack bob bruns or take 2 laps [lol]
We can add lib the rules to our taste but this is a good beginning!
Prize a old school zeronine legit ohio state #1 plate from 88 but its gonna be a stanley cup style award you get to hold for 1 year til next race then new winner takes over [well also have a new school #1 but just for looks ]
Winner takes all no 2nd place anything 1 race 1 winner .
Also included a set of checkerboard vans slip -ons ,a 6 pack of bud light,a bottle of extra strength tylenol, and a poster of heather thomas-pending avail. [sorry nicki and tiffany are taken] and a pat on the back from your peers-not to mention the clout!
Better pull up your leg gators its getting deep!

Maybe we can get a "Race for life" to coincide w/ the Kettering State race. More people, more riders, more fun. We can get Jeremy Mudd to set the date and set it up w/ Bob. Could be fun. But I think we should have to ride an 80's bike to enter the race. Just my thoughts. Tommy M.

Hey Todd. Man, we are getting old. My uncle's name is Don Church. He worked for your dad in the late '80's. I live in New Albany, Ohio (outside of Columbus).
My family moved to Devola (right off of Masonic Park on a street named Ellsworth Drive). It was probably a couple miles to your parents' place.
My grandfather and I drove your family's El Camino to the other side of Nashville to pick up a boat from a Manufacturer named Fiberking in '87. I slept in the back of it for most of the trip. That was a long trip straight down and back.
Not any racing going on.... yet! My son Will was born last summer and I have another child on the way. We have 6 P.K. Rippers of all sizes for when they grow into them. I kinda went crazy with all of the new Retro stuff. I miss BMX. I had a blast doing it!
I watch races at Heer Park BMX in Columbus from time to time. I never miss the Christmas Classic in downtown Columbus. I stopped by SE to see if you guys were around. I saw Trent and Javi. Lyons was too tired from his world travels and 2007 was the 1st Christmas Classic he ever missed.
I saw Troy at the Classic in 2000. Are you guys going to be there this year? I'll be sure to stop by.
What are you guys into these days? Last I heard you all had moved south to the Carolinas (I believe). My parents retired to Pawleys Island, SC 8 years ago. Great weather!
Here are a couple of pics from back in the day:
Chris Backus (Factory Hutch) '86 National in Marietta

Marietta Times clip from '86. Not sure who the rider was

Clip from the Parkersburg Sentinel. Me leading at Vienna on it's opening day in '85.

Me holding a few trophies from Marietta in '85. I am pretty sure Troy smoked us all again.

Great to talk to you.

Chad,Cooool................great pictures and good to hear you're ready for Will when he gets old enough
We are all in Summerville, SC, close to Charleston. Mom and Dad are still on the hill, trying to get them down here for years now.
I think the racer in the 2nd clip was the older Boyce brother.
I spent many days on boat runs too, always hell finding a good place to sleep.
I don't think we've missed a Xmas race in the last 10 years. We go to a bunch of NBL races, I'm sure we'll be at Pittsburgh, and Louisville. We will have the team set up at the Woodbridge, Lexington and Nashville nationals too. If you make it out, stop by and say hi. I'm sure we can find some SE swag to fix ya up with.
Here are pics of the team pit and our "hbr" uniforms this year......

Very cool Todd. I'm not sure I'll make it to any other National than the Christmas Classic this year. I'll definitely look for you guys. Sweet looking pits and uniforms. In a handful of years, if my son takes an interest in BMX I may check with you guys to see if your looking for a 5 year old rider.
Have you ever been to Hampton Supertrack in Hampton, Virginia? I used ride there when I was stationed at Langley AFB in Virginia. Pretty cool place. Not too far from you guys.
I think Marietta will always be my favorite track though.
Here's a pic of my original P.K. which I sold...... (Stupid)

And one of the new Little P.K.'s with my Mid 90's model....

Btw on the os race .......
Im not into asking for a free race but i will do this .
I can tell we have at least a gate of 4-5 second string legends on here allready so i know theyll race for sure ..Ill sponser any 2 top dog legends from bitd such as troy, todd lyons, the kinyalocts, billy ross etc for the race as in 30 day aba liscense and entry .Ill also do the same for 2 old school rookies so we will have a main if 4 people commit and give me thier word .Id like to see troy -and bros come up but understand thats a long way to travel.Maybe if its big and everyone dont mind paying we can get some "se pull" on a retro ripper frame to the winner too?
I know chris cline ,myself, jeremy mudd, greg boring, will race as the second stringers if the big dogs dont come .

Ok ,the rules can be whatever you guys want them to be .Id suggest 2 motos and the 1st can be a strictly old school bike moto-the second can be a strictly old school legend moto[pending attendance]then 4 from each moto comprimise the main .We have plenty of time to plan this .Theres no date set on the state finals yet or location but bob said its prob gonna be kettering?

No kidding! I have been racing a LOT over the last 6 months, but went down at the last Cobra race in March. Haven't been able to ride since - tweaked my wrist. Must be Steve's fault since he was sharing how he hurt his wrist the week before. LOL.
I am working on getting an old school cruiser together (hopefully, a 1990 frame would count!). I have 2 80's 20"s I could get out.
Just don't schedule this race over the NBL Grands or Ohio NBL state races!!!!

Cool thread.
I just got back from vacation so I missed the start of this thread. I raced from about 82-92. My home track was Akron and still is. I remember racing all the tracks that have been mentioned. I loved Marietta, that was one of my favorites. I just drove through there yester day on my way back from Florida and was thinking about all the great times I had there.
The first track I ever raced on was Avon Lake. I remember around 89 when I got my Cycle Craft and I went up there to try out the new bike and took off like a bat out of he11 and hit the doubles on the second straight and came up about 2 feet short. I can still remeber that pain and its surprising I was able to have kids after that one.
I used to race for Holeshot racing. Ruth and Jim were the best. If you look at my picture you can see me in my HS gear ahead of a Cycle Craft rider.
Some names that I remember:
Matt "the rat" Smith
Jason "J-Dog" Hembery
Matt Dillen
Shawn Bone
I can't think of any other names off the top of my head but I will post them as I think of them

This thread just shows how top riders Ohio BITD. Depending on the number of riders willing to race this type of race and if we want it to be centrally located. I'll talk to the TO's at Heer Park and could get this put together for the weekend of their state race or a local race.
The other cool thing with this race, is I final get to race guys that I looked up as a kid since I was younger than everyone else that has posted on this thread.

My wrist is feeling better. I skipped a trip to Rays because of how bad it still hurt. Getting better.
I am not sure about the state race at 330. I don't currently have it on my calendar, but am having some conflicts with the other state race dates. So, I may try to come over for a race.

I just wanted to post a picture of the plate you made. It is still one of my favorites. It has alot of sentimental value to me.
That awesome!

So I was wondering where all the Ohio BMXers went. Most of you guys left me here all by myself. LOL
Good to see some of you are back on it & on this thread.
Pic of me is from 1983 when I was 11yrs old. At these jumps in Upper Arlington called Ciao's. If any of you ever came to my house back in the day, we probably rode to these jumps. You had to sprint across the parking lot & launch the jumps to the flat ground. Fun stuff back then.
I remember riding the Coasters by the Kiniyalocts house. And I still remember how to spell their name after all these years.
I got a few names for ya that have just popped into my head:
Marty Brown (and his dad who ran the gates at Madison)
Aaron & Andrea Cargle. They were black & rode for GT around 1981. I beleive that they were ranked nationally. Aaron was #1 in Ohio until I & some others came onto the scene. I think we retired him by 1983. LOL...
Scott Wallace. He was my age & I think from Norwalk.
Vince Cowie. Me & him were buddies. He was my age as well.
Michelle & Mike Dean. Michelle went out with Chris Moeller in the late 80's.
Matt Henry. He was in my age group. I think he was def.
Aaron Hido e-mailed me a bit ago. He sent pics of his brother Todd with an '07 Floval Flyer. Cool.
Nobody has mentioned my brother, Brad. He was at the races back in the day. The he started riding "freestyle" with the Mid-Ohio Trick Team & the Chesrown Trick Team. My uncle Jim ran the team & shows with Dave DeMattis, Russell Tschimpke, David Fenstermaker, & my bro.
Brad Leach. He was a couple years younger than me. He rode for DK.
I think Lisa Vonderhae was one of the first girls who I ever kissed back in the mid 80's. And no, it's not in my journal. I didn't start my daily journal until 1988. LOL...
Anyone remember Craig Billingsly? He got back into BMX quite a few years ago & opened up "The Flow" skatepark in Columbus. It's one of the most famouse skateparks in the USA.
That's all I got for now. I'll have to dig through my photo albums when I get back home to jog the memory.

Remember Bender's, Griffith, Chernega, Cowley, Dillon, Kelly, Carje, Thompson, Hamillia, Hill, Riggle.
Hamillia told me a story about diggens stealing some grips @ the murray world cup.
he spit on the grips,
put them on,
"sure there on good"
One flew off over the big double down the 1st straight.
What was the name of the mexican kid who was fast as $hit.
raced @ norwalk
pre bmx track
dad owned a bike shop

Todd, I just sent you some pic of me this winter racing my '07 Floval. Us old Ohio guys can still get it a little bit.
Also, with all this old school talk, I thought I'd post an old school Ohio guy doing it new school. Here is a pic of me at the NBL Indianapolis Regional in February '08 on my 20". Was still in 35-40 Novice that weekend (since turned expert again). Did great that weekend on 20" (2nd Saturday, 1st Sunday). Even got a pic and a mention in the newest BMX Today. Didn't do so good on my cruiser (ended up on the ground at the wrong time each day. LOL).
I am in front in black/blue . . . yeah, a throw back to me and Tim Boring in Bruise Bros. colors.

Tommy Riggle and Jim Hill still racing today and doing well in 35-39 Cruiser. Tommy is still as super nice as he was back then and REALLY smooth on his cruiser.

Todd, I am sure you don't remember me but we hung out one weekend back in about 88 or 89 at the South Park national. We were just doing some random jumping over by the side of the track and we ended up kinda hangin out over the weekend. I had forgotten all about that until just now.
Chris, Cool to see you turned expert. Good luck, that looks like a tough class.

My first job ever was a dish washer at Ciao's. Where that picture was taken was just about at the side door to Ciao's too. That was just the view I saw as I left the building. I would ride my TA from across the river to work and back, That jump was pretty good, and you could get tons of speed before you hit the jump. I would also hit the jumps we called "sciota trace", back in the woods too before going to work most of the time.
Craig was a year older than me, and went to Hilliard. I keep saying I will check out the Flow... just havn't yet. I knew many of the same people, but I went to St. Brendans.
I only raced a few times, and only at the Hilliard track. Man was it always COLD....
Todd and the DK brothers were always the talk of the locals after the races around Hilliard.
