Todd and Steve you could pick out a mile away. I don't recognize anyone else, but you guys were a few years older than me also. I am sure others will chime in and put some names to the faces.

I personally like the two guys sitting on the floor. They look really excited to be there. wink.gif

I still have that plate and trophy. I remember being mad because I took fifth in the state that year and barely missed 4th and a bigger trophy.

Cool pic.

Matt Eash is Far Left. Next to L.C. is Brian Brooks. Next to him is Kris Mosser. They were younger than me but were part of the 30th st crew (canton)

LT1
Wow this is cool... My age group is not yet represented very well.. Not even pictures of Jodi ???

Lee Herge from NW Ohio but raced everywhere-- Team Dirt Rider, McFarlands from 84/85-92

Raced with:
Mike Carr
Roland Pavlik
Ron Sutton
Little Nard
Chris Passen
Scott Smallwood
Troy Hines

Traveled mostly with Ryan Meyers-who I think is the same age as Matt Polkamp

That is until 17x: then we all raced each other.

Okay, I don't understand the "jugheads" or "kermit the frog" comment, but then again I've been away for a long time so there's probably alot I don't understand about the BMX folks nowadays. smile.gif

Chuck im glad you checked in .I remember the kettering days like it was yesterday too.The best seat in the house was at the announcers tower with the guy from kg in the wheelchair .I remember a few races where me you and steve paul all practiced and sat under the shade while he announced .Also admired your riding style -you and tom k had a slight turn in your bars as you accelerated i tried to learn it but just didnt have the style like you guys .Jermemy mudd talked about you quite a bit with me over the indoor last year and how he went to the races with you .I remember crashing at nashville and there was a guy in front of me at the tent i believe it was mudd [this was in 87 i think]
Im hoping that we can reach more of or buckeye friends before summer .If any of you are wanting to see a close kinda big race next weekend daytons having a redline cup qualifier [bitd gold cup] hopefully there will be a decent turnout .
Everytime i pass the main street exit in dayton i think about the ol whitmans bike shop [especially when you go to try and find parts /good help at a local shop]wish they were still around .

hey stever, is whitmans no longer??? I tell you what man, i get real sentimental and all teary eyed when i think about the old bmx years, right now i wish i was in ohio , i would be on my bike in a heart beat!! yeah, you are talking about doug kremer, {the guy in the wheel chair}he owns k&g bike shop, he got married a while back to one of my mom"s old friends daughter.he is an awesome person. i tell you what i wonder what d. zimmer is doing. he and i hated each others guts back then, always stuffing each other over the berms, wonder if he still hates me???lol...we used to start little mini races from the second table top at ketterin and race to the turn, there were many times i lost spokes in my wheels!!! j-rad was usually the one to inflict the most damage to my bike!! i remember nashville in 87, tom k had a REAL BAD crash in practice, i was standing against the fence and saw it all, happened over the first jump, they had to take part of the lip off that jump later on cause of too many injuries!!! i thought of some more names,... do you remember, jamie holiday{rode a cw}larrymeiers, sean cooney, eddie combs, jason mcnutt, wildman from w.v.(talked REALLY FAST)

I miss all the local bike shops with the latest and greatest bmx bikes and parts. It was nice to be able to touch them and compare before buying. Every town had at least one. Now it's Dans Comp.com or some other website to order from. I stopped in at Frankford Bike Supply (Bmx mailorder Gods of yesteryear) last summer and was bumbed to see just the average selection of low to mid range bikes they stocked. They used to have every frame and fork you could imagine lined up hanging on the wall. That was the place to see what was the difference between the new Elf xl and the new Free Agent Limo frame was live and in person 6 months before any local shops got them if they ever did. When I asked what they stocked for Bmx racing they showed me a $400 expert sized redline and a mini. That's all they had in racing bikes. It was SAD. Going to hilltop was sweet because we could stop and pick from Frankford's huge selection of Vans shoes before the race. Does any one remember custom ordering vans shoes? It took like two-four weeks to get them. Custom Shoes that was the poop poop poop, I say again, poop. I'm sure for you southern boys whitmans was that place for you. But for us up north we had Frankford.

Couple more names from the "Finals line-up" picture.
I believe that might be Chris Allman, seated on the right. Definitely Sean Dunn on the left as Steve has already said. Top row - Fourth from the left is Aaron Crampton. I used to race him alot in our novice days.

Hi Chuck! It's great to see you on here... I always think of you anytime someone mentions the Bio-Pace (oval shaped) sprockets that Shimano made, you had one of these right? Where did you live back then...Fairborn? Riding at Delco was super fun BITD. I take my boy there once in a while, he learns all the good swear words from the locals there, kids have such potty mouths these day....were we like that?
From what I understand Jicha moved to Fla. and later lost a battle w/ cancer, it was years ago, he was not very old maybe in his late 20's? ...sucks
Sorry about the damage to your ride, I learned that style from riding w/ Steve Paul....you can blame him.. ha! I see Doug Z. once in a while, he is doing well, riding MX for fun last time I saw him, had a cool 50's track on his property.
Welcome to the madness!

Hey J-rad!! hope you are doing well!! Yep, kevin harry(k.c. racing) managed somehow to get me one of those bio-pace sprockets when they first came out. they were awesome for starts. the only drawback was they only came in certain sizes, 44 tooth was the only one that made sense to run on a bmx. Yep, i grew up in Fairborn, or as the locals called it,Squareborn!!! Nate chever, Jeremy mudd, and a bunch of other guys lived right down the road from me. ya we dropped a lot of "f" bombs back in the day too!! I guess thats part of being a kid, i can remember trying waaay too hard to look cool in front of my piers back then!!!!! Dont swet the damage, spokes back then were like 10 cents a piece and i was always building new wheels. It was really fun any ways banging elbows!I went back and raced some in 2003,I think I made a lot of guys angry,(Because of my 80"s riding style), Everyone now days seem to take it way too personally if you do a little rubbin!!! biggrin.gif How is Steve p?Do you still talk t o him??? Wow, I used to really look up to you and him, When i first found out about bmx, I was at delco one day, and here come you and steve, you were on your black chrome gt and he was on his robinson, (I was on an imitation redline)you guys were flyin!!! it totally blew my mind!!!! By the way, what does BITD mean??? Please tell steve and doug hello for me. biggrin.gif Hit me back when you get a chance!! cool.gif

I guess we ALL enjoyed BMX so much back then that its really easy to remember all the fun, traveling, and clowning around we got to do. The racing and missing school for Nationals was just a bonus!

Yah I remember Dave, yes I agree confidence is one thing most of us older riders need to get past. Jumping is the other, but not necessary at Dayton. The wife just got bumped to pick up call on Sat. so that means I'll only be able to make Sunday's RCQ. Don't need to race both days anyway. Thats what I'm telling myself. Good luck to all. And see you soon. Tommy

Well I went down to Dayton Indoor this past weekend to race the RCQ. 44 motos in that little building. It was a good turnout and Bob and crew did a good job at running the Motos. We were out of there at 5pm. The 36-40 cruiser class had a full gate with Steve Smith being the favorite (it is his local track). In the main my handlebars came up under my helmet and jscked my jaw so hard that I was seeing stars. I don't remember going over the next 3 jumps but when when I could see again all I saw was a big pole right in front of me. I hit the brakes turned and avoided it barely. Got back on the track and finished the race. I had bit the back of my tongue on the side and was drinking blood for about a half hour after the race. Just glad I didn't crash into anybody else when I blacked out. No training you can do to help that situation, so guess I got to get back to the gym. It still hurts to eat. Had a lot of fun and can't wait to get back on the track. Oh ya, Steve did win the main. See you all soon. Tommy

Tommy,
Glad to hear you didn't get seriously injured! You guys looked like you were having a good time and that's what the sport of BMX was/is all about. I still have a blast watching the races and it was great to see Ashley Lutz' son(all of 4 years old) out front winning. I'm glad to hear Steve Smith raced the main, I know his back was acting up but he's the same old Steve, winning at will! One of these years I'll let the bikes I purchased see the track but not sure when? I was also happy of the news that good ol' Springfield Lagonda is going to be coming back to the racing scene under a new name. It's good to see such a great sport start growing again, remember BITD when we (our parents) use to buy those BMX poster size schedules with ALL the NBL tracks in Ohio on them? I think in like 85 there were like 28 tracks in Ohio alone? I'm sure many of us from the 80's scene had that thing hung up in our bedrooms! Anyway, hope to see everybody at the races again soon!

Kevin im planning on trying to make it-i was there last year .
You ky/indiana.mich. guys are welcome to come to ours here in ohio at kettering too.we should be setting the date very soon ,and ketterings track is very mild for the older riders that have not touched a bike in years is fun to stretch thier legs again..

That standard bike he has 4 sale should be a great buy thier cruisers geometry are set up by a rider .They have a relatively short chainstay ,REAL top tupe measurements ,and a nice headtube angle .You wont be dissapointed on a standard from .Imo 14-3/4s should be a industry standard on 24' chainstays and there may be 4 companys right now with sub 15 [most are pushing 16].

Tommy merryman has been doing his situps since last year im sure he wants to take more se goodies home this year ..Hopefully we can have some kinda cookout [not annas snack stand]or eat at applebees or crispy creme laugh.gif afterwords.

Steve, I'll have a mini grill with me to cook on. I would really like to see a pic of that O-S bike you'll be riding. I really love that white cruiser of yours. If I had the $ I would be racing one too. My local shop has one in its front window. I can't wait till we can get outside and do some real training. All I've been doing this winter is riding my rollers, and some situps too. LOL They keep me from gaining weight, got to stay under 130lbs to ride those 1 1/8s.
They have started destroying the old track in Toledo. Going to move the dirt to the new location soon. It won't be long before we have a track to ride on. I'll keep you all posted when it starts taking shape. I understand that the ABA is sending someone to rough it in. There is plenty of dirt to build any size track. Should be worth the trip to come up and ride the RCQ in July. I will have to defend my home track. Tommy

Thanks Chris, but that Red JMC Cruiser is attached to my manhood. If I got rid of it, then what would I be? Honestly, it would be the LAST bike that I would get rid of if I had to sell off my collection. I ride it everyday, it is my practice bike. Its sad but, I have already let go of few this year to make ends meet. Sell a few to keep many.
