Steve,
I don't remember Kevin's colors/numbers. I might have something, but can't remember what to look for.
Also, you can tell Kevin I think Mike has always felt bad that he might have hurt Kevin's pedal with his face ... seriously, Mike has never complained about that moment. It was no one's fault and could have been worse.
All of you guys had your share of spills BITD.

Crys and Steve,
So I guess I was right after all. I'm embarrassed about my guess. Mark Augustine looks correct to me now.
Hi Crys, I should have a photo somewhere of a finish line with you in it that I used for NBL training classes, but I don't know where. BA is the Eagle Snacks uniform I think. I wish I had more of the rider with the McFarland's on the sleeve so we could see him too. I do think Rick wore the U2 helmet.
Mike
Hey Steve and Mike,,, Yes there are probably a few pictures around with me on the finish line.. I just am thankful no one ran over me... Charlie is better at picking out the riders then I am.. I have pictures , but all are stored somewhere in a box in Ohio...It was our pleasure and certainly a blessing to have so many friends young and old in so many places we all visited... Crys,
I have vivid memories of you and Rosie Au standing your ground in many a close encounter at the finish line and just kept recording riders.
You and Charlie had so many friends because you were such wonderful friends to
everyone.

Ok Mike you caught me riding for McFarlands. I see Jason Sevolt's leg in this pick (he just bought a plane). I tracked him down on facebook. The Dk rider in the other pic was Mark Aug. ,B.A. eagle snacks, and RVH sportin his bono fetish. I shure miss seeing all you guys. I had a blast a Rays. No crashes and the DK 24 was Fun. I hadn't rode one in 20 years. I forgot how much easier they jump and ride. I think I may use it at the next old school race. It handles my fat gut better even with the short neck.

I might make a few limited appearences. Nothing to serious. I like to keep the "I don't ride enough to be fast " excuse. Both my boys are playing football again, and that limits the time we can get away. I remember having to quit football to chase all you guys around the country. It was worth it!

Do any of you remember Mike Earley? He was one of the first older riders that I looked up to BITD. He had a factory ride w/ Puch and did a lot of announcing. He was a super cool dude, and still is. Well... he will be on 60min this Sunday on CBS; they are doing a story on the economic state of Wilmington OH. Mikes had some tough times; lost his son in the war and now his longtime job at DHL is going away. Mike has a cool hobby though and I hope to see some of it on the show. Oh yea... he did change his last name to his surname O'Mahearley or something like that? Anyway..I though some of you might want to check it out.

Hey Jered.
It's sure good to hear from you. I might have seen you when I went to an open house at DK with Norm White in about 1996 or 1997 (?). Thanks for the lead on 60 minutes this Sunday. Mike looks pretty much the same as he did 25 years ago. I used to stay at his house when I was 16 and he was 18 or 19. Seemed so much older then. I'll be sure to watch.
I don't remember which park we went to that day. There was a place in Sharonville called Dead-Man's that Mike liked. It was a long downhill into a dry creekbed and back up the other side. If that was the day that FM Achor showed up (you remember Lorelei?), I chewed up my shin pretty bad on a pedal slip.
I did have a blue JMC that I ended up cracking at the old Apple indoor skatepark in Columbus with Mike.
You guys got me so excited about old times that I dug out a VHS tape of the last day at Joyce Park in 1983. If you were there that day, there's a good chance that you're on it. If you were, let me know your class and what you would have been wearing and I'll try to find you. Mike was announcing that day too.

Jrad,
!st the flannel - Probably when you were already racing for Whitman's I found a Redline with Bob Reedy pedals, Bullseye hubs, Scott Mathauser brake pads, sealed bottom bracket and much much more at a police auction. I didn't even know what BMX was but the bike was cool and other people were bidding like crazy on it. The rear tire was a non-knobby street tire. I bought it for $170 and went to Eastland Schwinn to find out were you could race them. They told the about the Madison Township track. I found an old 1/2 helmet in a field and painted it like the "Chips" tv show. (I hope Mike doesn't read this) poor kid had to have a cheap skate for a dad. Anyway, I bought the cheapest number plate I could find, cut a number 5 out of some prism material, grabbed a long sleeve shirt (Flannel) for Mike, threw the Redline in the back of my 1957 Nomad and headed for Madison. I was furious when they made me add a #1 in front of his #5. In his typical style, Mike just went with the flow and had a great time. So that is Mike in front at what I am pretty sure was his first race. I think we started about 1980. There wasn't really a team flannel, but it looks like it in that photo. I cannot remember the other two riders.
I cannot remember the details on the second photo. I do not recognize the gate or the starter/gate-watcher on the hill. Also Mike usually did not race on 1.75 wheels so it's all confusing to me.
Eddie,
We did try to save weight especially up high on the bike and in the rolling mass (wheels and tires).

I remember at least once that he lost most of the spokes on a wheel, so it could be.
Here's a bunch of small tires (and low numbers on plates):
