Ted, there was a BMX bike at Friday's??? I wonder where they got it from. Did you ask if they would sell it? If you didn't ask them, could you please post their phone number here so I can call them and see if they will sell it? Did the pedals have clips or not (clipless are the best you know)?

QUOTE (Brrrrrrad A. @ Mar 20 2008, 10:08 AM) *
They don't sell them. They bought them off the ebay.

Mongo was just being sarcastic, TGIF bikes and clips are also some topics that get folks dander up here

IMO NOS is only worth anything if you're gonna just sit and look at it, and hope maybe it'll be worth even more later. If you're gonna put it on a bike...my opinion here...a mint used or restored piece will do ya much better. My .02. And I'll agree, some of us take this stuff WAY too seriously.

Frankly, stupid debates like this are the exact reason I've spent the last 30 days selling my ENTIRE collection. The thrill is gone due to all the stupid politics.

This isn't the first time someone has done this, and I just don't get it? How do you "let" this stuff get to you so much that you sell off all your stuff? If you truly enjoy this hobby, all the "stupid Politics" and "stupid debates" would be just that, stupid and would not really matter!

Anyway, ya gotta do what ya gotta do! Plus some people are gettin some pretty cool stuff from ya!

I know, I don't see why drama gets under some folks' skin so much. I view it as entertainment. I just like BMX stuff and hanging out with others who also do. Love looking at the bling at Rockford, and yeah, building one every so often but I've been kinda dormant for a while in that regard. I've been playing more with my new school ride.

As mentioned earlier, whether you think something is NOS (or not) needs to be determined by the prospective buyer before the transaction is complete. Whenever possible. Either by holding it in your hand or lots of really good photos on eBay. You just gotta watch out, it really comes down to that.

Some good points were made about things that may have been installed but show ABSOLUTELY NO SIGN of ever being installed. Lots of parts could fall into that. Pedals, installed once on a show-only bike---how you gonna know? Even grips can be taken back off and cleaned. Seats. Stems. Seat post clamps. Even tires. If installed carefully, they can be put on/off without a mark being made on them.

Eye of the beholder.

Hayes has a good point here about searching...BUT, in defense of 91GT347, if you search "NOS" using the "search" link, it returns no results (at least for me). Obviously there is something rotten in the state of Denmark here, and I am going to work to get to the bottom of it, but soon!

Notwithstanding the tech gremlins, for my part, I would much rather have a new user post a comment, opinion or question (even if it is a dead horse that has been ridden into the glue factory in days gone by), than be reluctant to do so for fear of a public flogging.

So how many here buy NOS parts (using the term lightly) and just look at them and pet them rather than putting them on a bike? I guess I'd only buy an NOS part to install it on a bike, making it not NOS (cough)

LOOKING OVER THE WALL

In my humble opinion (And in a perfect world), the term NOS should be redefined... We should have something like:

NOS Museum Quality
NOS Mint (box or no box)
NOS Shelve Wear
NOS Survivor

Collectors have learned to accept stuff like pressed cups into NOS Frames (I guess it should be fine being done by some shops BITD), anything else is just USED in good-mint condition.

Just my two cents tongue.gif

No, sorry. No Mongoose stuff.

The point we were all trying to make was that if the new guy had done a search before starting his own thread on something that has been beat TO DEATH, maybe he could have saved the energy for a more meaningful thread. Just seems odd for a brand new member (regardless of how long he's been into BMX) to come here and use the iron fist approach of "this is what NOS means, period". Just a bit odd is all.

It's hard to generate a more meaningful thread than one that's gotten four pages worth of replies in less than a week's time...

It hasn't been that long since we would get that many pages in several threads (often one covering definitions of NOS) over a 24 hour period....things are slow...

Louisville, not sure who you are calling a jackA@%$, but it kills me how all you new guys come here acting like this. The GT dude with his know it all mantality and you coming here calling people names who have been here 3,4,5 years or longer. This place (Vintage) has ALWAYS been home for me but recently, as has been pointed out above, things are slow here. I for one don't come around much because of the influx of you new guys who think you own the place. Starting to feel like the BMX Museum over here and that just plain SUCKS. If you guys want to come here and talk BMX stuff, then GREAT, but it's the attitude and tone in which you two are using that turns people off. No one could care that you guys are new, just no reason to be the new guy and act like a jackbag and call other people names who have been here wayyyyyyyyyyyyy longer than you.

I'm not directing my comments to anyone person, and yes I may be new to this site, But I raced BMX way Bitd just like everyone else, so new to this site doesn't make me New to Bmx, I was simply stating that a guy shouldn't feel uncomfortable to voice his views about what he thinks NOS means,,and it seems that there is a small group of Know it all people who think they coined the meaning of NOS and by looking at your last comments you must think you are one of them, who cares who has been on this site longer it just took some of us longer to find it, I'm glad that I found this site, if anything came of it, I know the meaning of NOS now, and I also know that Brian Hays thinks since he has been on VBMX longer than me, that doesn't give me a right to an opinion, and he also thinks that us new guy's think we own the site, WOW ,,Seems Brian thinks My words must have been Directed at Him, so what does that tell ya,,,,he must think he is one of the know it all's and got offended,

Your knowledge of old school parts and your definition NOS may be stronger than mine I don't really care, I'm just tired of seeing all of you older VBMX Members thinking you own this site and that your word is GOD, it is Stupid that some Guy you don't even know post a Thread about NOS and 50 Guys Jump his A@% and try and make him feel Small, my opinion,
But I really guess I should check to see how many years i need to be on this site and how many post i need to make before I voice that opinion,,,,Brian since you seem to know everything maybe you can be the Judge on that too.

This is funny ,you uptight nos guys need to be concourse car show judges .Theres a easy way to id stuff as like new or new ...if your gonna pay 3000. for a set of v bars then fly out and look at them before you buy them laugh.gif Its always the guy that assumes quality and dont ask or worry til its at his doorstep.
Personally i think having a house full of 70s bikes and parts is silly and ive still gotten ripped on used parts online wether its cars or bikes .People lie ,fib, dont inspect ,over exagerate, underexagerate to sell ..I been around since 81 myself so im no newbie either ..
mcam
I think it is kind of strange/funny/interesting how peoples interpretation of the term NOS differs so much. It is almost as interesting as how the term "repro", short for REPROduction got twisted around to Repop. Repop doesn't show up in any dictionary, but Repro does....

Anyway, NOS means to me, means unmounted, and should (but not always is applied) be in its original packaging, ie unopened. And NOS doesn't mean it is mint, asnd blemish free. Shelf wear is REALLY common on old NOS parts.

QUOTE (BridgeCity @ Mar 19 2008, 02:09 PM) *
yah, this is well discussed.

actually a new person to the site is the most logical person to mention this because they probably got taken by an ASSUMPTION of what they thought this was SUPPOSED to mean, but got something entirely different in the mail. smile.gif

like when i was back to doing some bike building after decades away from building bikes, i got some "NOS" stuff in the mail and low and behold, I never knew that black grimey grease with road sand in it was part of the NOS assembly. DOH!

Now this Mr. Hays and and oldprobmx
this is a guy making a good point and also making a new member feel welcomed and not like an idiot about voicing his opinion and posting a thread,,,,,,,maybe you guys should take some notes,,,

Sir perhaps with your 164 post are not aware of the site's hazing policy.
Quite frankly, I can't fill you in on details, but all noobs are to be treated as inferior in every way possible (this weeds out the weak hearted) until they have reached an acceptable number of posts, at which time they will be considered still inferior, but at least capable of forming a rational thought (even if by accident).
That condition will persist until you hit the magical 1000 post mark.

Once your at 1000, a new window opens up, explains the rules, which include chapters on "Noob hazing", "Poking the hornets nest", and "Turning away the poseurs".

It is in fact our sworn duty to keep check on the noobs, We all took the oath when we were given the password to the secret "cool kids room" here at the V.

That has to be the funniest thing I have read all year so far RCain, but its true in a kind of way, yes this is my second post on this site and yes I am a n00b here, but in other places on the net I am not a n00b, but this doesn't give me or anyone else any reason to be treated any different than some one with 1000+ posts, as I have information and opinions too, but that person might have earn t his/her respect from the time and effort and contribution to the site, and I have quite a collection of oldschool BMX stuff and have been into BMX since my first looptail PK in OZ in the eighty's, now at 34yo I haven't as much to offer as someone like Mr Hays who I know has been around longer than me and is well respected in this community by me and others in the vintage BMX scene, not only by what he has to say and inform us of the facts but also as a trading partner and someone who will help others out if need be especially when it comes to SE stuff, But I totally agree with this thread that NOS has different degrees of meaning and that some aren't honest about the fact that NOS show bike mounted isn't NOS anymore, but is still a great piece of BMX ether way, especially if your just going to mount it on another show bike, Keep up the good work and ride hard, cheers Mega
