I have been hanging/lurking around this board for many years now and have got to know a bunch of really cool guys here. I know some legends sign on from time to time but for those who us are not legends, did your picture ever make it to BMXA, BMX Plus, Freestylin, etc? If so, it would be cool to hear your story about how you made the cut either during practice, racing, as a spectator, or just plain rippin it up.

Let the bragging begin....

Ha, so the only shot of me - and I don't have the issue. My name wasn't mentioned but I was dead even with Brian Gass - can't even remember the race, I think it was in Bakersfield or something..

Big thrill though..

I was in Dec. "78'' bmxa basically a spectator in the pits watching Stan Robinson ride a micro bike. No pictures of me racing but I did pull a holeshot on my idol Kyle Fleming but ended up 3rd in that moto and 22nd overall at the JAG world championships in Indy. It was cool racing my idol DG to DG!!! My bro. finished 5th with about a 4' tall trophy he was 6 at the time.

I got a photo in GO from sending in a letter with a photo; fat X-up on my cruiser.
I'm lurking in the background in the Texas Tour edition of BMXA; maybe 1988 with Darwin Griffin/Boss no-hander on the cover.

Good stuff guys. Keep it coming. The best I got isn't even worth an honorable mention but I recall getting into the ABA paper back around 83/84.

bbohlmann
ESPN series, St. Louis, 1982, full 2 page spread in BMXA. My brother is the "shadow head" sitting down to my left. That "Coke is It" sign hung in our gararge for years............

i told this story back when i joined. got no play. anyway....
i attended the 84 aba grands when jose did the flip. i was front and center at the ramp when he did the 1st one and alot of the rest. so march 85 comes around all the mags come out with coverage. back then i got them all. poured over them. nothing.
i go to an indoor race on a hockey rink at austin mn. guy next to me is looking at superbmx special grands edition. i flip through it--on the last page-- there it is. ME standing next to another guy with his jaw dropped. who was this guy, oh only STU THOMSEN.
needless to say i would pay stupid money for that issue. march 1985 super bmx special edition for the 1984 aba grand nationals.
thanks guys
MikeCarruth
I remember that shot.

Didn't they put some kind of "speech balloon" caption on you guys?

can't remember, i know plus did though.
so the question is-- we know bmxa archives went in the dumpster, hi-torque has plus, what happend to super bmx's
did you take that pic??
Chris C.
I was on the cover of Bicycles Today once.

Also made it, barely, into BMX Plus. It was a B-Pro or Pro Open moto over the first jump at Woorward. You could barely see me through the pack.
or01bmxr
In some old Super BMX's in 80 or 81, my whole family was snapped standing behind the second berm at Riverside BMX in Clackamas, OR, multiple times. I never bought the mag cuz I didn't have the cash at 14 and I have never seen the issue since.

And, my brother got a sweet pic of him being jumped over by Darrell Young at Gabriel Park in Portland, OR in GO, The Riders Manual magazine.

Oh, and my buddy Jeff Tabacchi doing a Toboggan on the COVER of BMX Action.
npsarider
i was in total bmx pompono war of the stars cant think of the year and bmxtoday 2 times
Mark 'Gonzo' Summers
Great topic. I was captured in the most obscure fashion in a photo in BMXA when they covered the NBA Shawnee Nationls 30 years ago. I will need to go back to find that issue and scan it.

Keep your seats while I dig through my closet..............
Mike'Ultimate Sin of Bmx'Crehan
On the cover of Bicycles Today twice.
Jason Chang
Shot by the one and only Windy, I think a very young Gork and Spike was there too. More work than any race or training session. Had to add alittle moto style to the full race tuck by Travis.

Yow. Nice air over those triples Jason!!! I couldn't pull that one off in my best years. The stories are great but keep posting pics if you got em.

Love the "Jose Flip" story. Those pics blew my mind when I saw them. A flip back then was just unthinkable. Now it is almost common in xgames and dew events.... how the time have changed my friends.

MikeCarruth
No, I did not shoot it, most likely John Ker. I did not start there until July 1985 (the Del Mar Contest was my first event as a staffer).

No info on the archives.

Best,

M

My buddy made it in there a few times I think...

Iamwarthog
BMXA once. Ascot ABA National ('86?) pro open 1st moto, getting SMOKED by Tommy Brackens, Greg Hill, Ronnie Anderson, and Toby Henderson. I still recall walking up and looking at that moto sheet, which consisted of only those guys and me and thinking, "You've gotta be kidding me".
tedr
Back when I was much younger and slimmer I got a full page picture of my backside in BMXA!

JAG Worlds in Indy 1980, I wish I could brag that Windy took it... but it was the old guy Oz.

I had some BW pants with "NOBODY" on the back and I was leaning on a railing when he snapped the shot, a few months later it showed up as a subscription ad, it said:

"Become somebody...subscribe to mighty BMXA"

Thats how a mediocre novice like I was at the time gets a full page pic I guess?

Ted
rick kast
that's awesome, i remember that ad!
Wildman
I think 1980 Sept issue BMXA. ABA Midwest National. I was taking video of OZ and he took a pic of me videoing him. He used the pic in connection with the Kevin McNeil story. Unfortunatly my video camera may have gotten more coverage than I did. Wildman

BOY it was sure hard gettin in that mag all the guys that were gettin in on a regular basis hopefully didnt take it for granted....Me? inside cover at the 88 xmas classic, for the feature chrome small but it was me. riding for sundance, makin my first superclass main.
VADER
No pic here, but I had my name mentioned for some why I lost contest in BMXA around 84.
Fred Garvin
Nope, never made it into a BMX mag that I know of, but I may be on a few post office walls. worried_anim.gif
COASTY
I wish I could have made it in BMXA. Bit hard from down here though!
Had a full article on myself and a mate in our top aussie mag at the time.

One pic in BMX action from 1980. And one cover from
the ABA action newspaper nov. 1979. blink.gif

No picture, but a story on my car getting stolen when Mike C. was visiting me in michigan. Not funny then, but funny now. S
billythekid
BMX Action Cover of the January 85' Issue covering the 84' NBL Grands in Louisville. Right behind Kevin Collins. Ended getting a 5th Place in the main that year, totally screwed up my start, hit the gate.

Bmx Prof
I was on the cover with the Factory Bandito team, we were all hanging off of the motor home. When my parents basement flooded I lost my only copy.

Also did a BMX commercial for Nickelodeon when I was a kid. It aired during Monday night football. "kids programming is looking good on the cable system". I had a copy of the tape on Beta, my parents still may have it. My friends in the west all called to razz me about it.

I had a series shot in BMX plus! two years ago and been in the BMXer and BMX Today dozen or so times in the last six years.
jkraig
This is the closest I ever got. Cover of the USBA Racer. 1986 USBA Grands - Billy Griggs and I side by side in the main.

DeLuxxBmxMidWest
1981 NBL Lawrenceville NJ national on a 26" cruiser with Steve Rich in front of me clearing the table top jump.
I think I might have been in Total BMX, but don't recall 26 years later.
I think I was mentioned in standings not pics if that counts.
B. Apold
Anyone remember the joke captions on the back page of Plus. "I'm from the planet Metric, take me to your Liter". It should a couple guys in Scott masks... Or was it BMXA.

oc dave
Ya,I made a cameo apperance on the cover of BMX A in August of 82 sitting on the ground watching Eddie Fiola Bustin out a one handed one footer. I am the Geek with the cop shades on. Also made it to the back of a milk carton once worried_anim.gif

I got a sideline shot of me at the 1980 NBA Super Nationals in BMX Plus

Funny thing,
My dad got one too. Same day, different photo.
Tom Perigo
Wildman, I just bought that August 1980 issue because of the coverage of the Elkhart national and there you are with your cowboy hat and sunglasses. Pretty cool!!!
