I think I may have talked my brother into letting me sell it for him. He's supposed to send me pictures soon. This is one of 3 made and only one of 2 known to still exist today.

I will post pics when they get to me.

Mike

Still working on the pics.

I remember about 5 years ago a dude in Oklahoma posted pics of his real GJS 24" A-Frame, the serial number was simply "JU". He was not interested in selling.

Jeff himself posted that he welded 3 or 4 of these himself in his spare time, but his dad talked him out of production because he was afraid they would not sell.
Michael Weaver
Actually, it's Kansas, not Oklahoma. But anyways, it's the same one with the JU dropout.

I did post pics a number of years ago. That was around 3 computers ago.

Looks like he tried to use a GJS seat post clamp. Actually looks like he tried to use it 4 different times. SUPER COOL STUFF RIGHT THERE!
Michael Weaver
Okay guys, here's the deal.

Brad said he'd sell it if he can get the money he needs to finish a portion of his flight training. He wants to fly for an airline. He gave me a reserve amount. I'm not sure how we should go about selling it though so I'm still noodling that part of it. I will let you know more as soon as I think of it.

I may even throw in my 20" sister frame to that one to help him get the dough he needs.

Patience is a virtue.
Jeff Utterback
It should come as no surprise that I have wanted this frame and fork back for a long time.

Numerous emails asking about a price for a set I GAVE away BITD, with no replys.

Funny that something I scabed together one weekend a long time ago would [I tried to curse] me off so much today.

I have contacted you about a price but no reply. I had Brian Hays contact you. no reply.

Hope your brother makes some coin off of my gift to you guys.

Michael Weaver
Jeff, I am sorry, this is all new information to me.

I have sent you an instant message through VBMX with my phone number. Please call me Tuesday.

BMX2112
get it back to Utterback!
get it back to Utterback!

That is a beautiful bike. I had no idea such a thing existed.

It needs to be in Mr. Utterback's possession, in my humble opinion.

Wow...

Jeff I do not know you or the seller, but you attacking him is a in my oppinion is a low blow. When Mike's brother got the bike, did you "GIVE It Away" or Sell it to him?

If you SOLD the bike then you and the buyer were both happy at the time. I think we have all kicked ourselves for selling things back in the day that we wished we would kept.

Go ahead people and flame me. Just my 2 Cents.
BMX2112
uuummm...did you miss the part where he clearly stated that he GAVE the f&f set away?? rolleyes.gif

I don't know any of the parties involved either.

"Gave" is the operative word in this story.

Isn't the best giving done without expecting something in return?

"Gave" does not imply that it was loaned and expected back at a later date.

In my opinion, the f&f was no longer Jeff's when he gave it away.

If the current owner gives it back to Jeff, can he expect to get it back in a few years, or does this giving circle end at Jeff?

It would be cool if Jeff got the f&f back, but the seller should not be sacrificed in the name of one man's regret in gifting a f&f.

Thank you for cleaning up my retard's version of the same post.

GAVE can be taken 2 ways. It was a GIFT to the current owner or it was GAVE away for far to cheap(SOLD), considering what it is worth in todays crazy market.

jeff is asking for a price. not for it to be given back for free. i think he should be considered first, being this a tight knit community and all. i've sold all my old bmx stuff to guys on here wanting to rebuild their childhood bike. y'know, hoping one day i'll get that same chance. anyone have a spare MAXIMUM laying around.

JU is one of the classiest low key ex-pros around. He did not go after the seller. He simply stated that he would like the frameset and was upset that the seller had not responded to various e-mails from him or Hayes. Upset enough to point out that the frame had been given away in the beginning. Common courtesy would dictate that at the very least you would answer an e-mail regarding the frame which obviously means a lot to Jeff. Michael has obviously responded now that he knows.

JU isn't asking to get it back for free. Hell, I'll be the first one to pitch in $100 towards whatever the seller might be asking to help Jeff get the frame back. It might not be much, but every little bit helps.

Just so we're all on the same sheet.

I spent an hour last night going through my email account. I have nothing from Jeff regarding this so to see him upset like this is unexpected.

I do have a PM from Hayes. He asked if I have jeffs contact info. I misunderstood it thinking that he was getting it for me. I have apologized for that mistake in my post above.

My number is 605 209-1158 and my email is mike at dreambmx.com.

I will be in and out today as I have to pick up our sons death certificate and I have class this evening. If you leave a message with a number, I will call back.

Very sincerely, Mike

Step Back from Mike for a bit... I am sure this frame is not the most important thing going on in his life right now... JU does deserve a fair shot at it yes, but give the guy a break b4 you start giving him BS. It's not even his bike it's his Bro's...

I agree with Brett on this one, Mike sorry to hear of your loss man and prayers of healing and sorrow go out to you and your family bro.

I think we all owe Mike an apology.

I'm stepping away from this thread. I apologize for even getting involved.

Stupid bikes make people act all stupid.

If there's anything I can do for you, Michael, let me know.

TeamRob
I too agree that Jeff should have first shot. On the other habd there is a thing called First Right of Refusal - When I buy something from a friend who really does not want to give it up. I state - you will have first First Right of Refusal IF I will ever sell it. In some cases it is a signed documenton other it can be spoken.

In ny eyes, if I give something away or sell it (either way, it leaves my possession) it is no longer mine and I have no more say about it. UNLESS you state otherwise! Was this verbally stated or written? I learned my lesson on one or two sales here. They showed right back up on eBay - I now say it is yours to do with what you want, you own it.

If this frame was a Schwinn Scrambler (no one would really want) would this even be a topic? Would there be any question about what to do with it? Would anyone even want it. Now that it is highly sought after the rules are changing.

This might get me banned but I look at some of this stuff fro a legal standpoint - Not having to do with personal emotion: Jeff might be classy and a ture legend but the facts are just that. In a legal U.S. courts would JU have a leg to stand on? The BMX court seems to play by different rules.

Why did you give it away in the first place? I gave away a blue Cook Bros Stem years ago. If I found the guy that had it - would I be entitled to it just because it used to be mine? Would he have to sell it to me first before anyone else?

Let's all throw all that out the window and say what Reilley1 said. Start a fund that will allow JU to be able to buy the setup back. Set-up a PayPal account to allow others to donate toward the cause if that is what needs to be done to allow JU to attain back what he once had.

Michael Weaver
I have spoke with Brad this morning.

At this time, the frameset is not for sell. It will remain in his possesion as it has been for 20+ years when it was given to him by George as his sponsor.

It hurt him to know what we are going through and that some supposed grown men are fighting about some stupid metal objects.

I have asked Elvis to delete this post. Until then,

Please do not post any more on this thread.

BenOr
Unbelievable! The thread gets started in the main area when it should have been bounced immediately to the “For Sale” or “Fishing” section. It gets strung out over a week waiting for pictures building and bumping interest.

I remember this years ago when this frame first came up. Jeff wanted it. He has spoke of it many times over the past few years. He not once asked for it for free or cheap. I remember the non reply emails years ago on this same frame. All he asked was for a chance to buy it back.

Over the past few years I have loved selling bikes back to their owners/builders. I offered Lynn Kastan my Redline mono first. He said no and I went to the next in line - SBS. Same with the #3 ever Diamond Back I found. Sandy Finkelman got it. I liked that they found there way home. Both paid what I asked for them.

This doesn’t have to go to Jeff, but the second reply was that he wanted it. This horse [I tried to curse] about it was a gift is BS. He deserves the first chance to buy it and no [I tried to curse]. If he doesn’t want to pay market, go to the next bidder. Better yet, just use eBay instead.

Jeff is one of the nicest people you will meet. He donated a pile of his personal items to the John Crews Charities. His family donated NOS frames to a food bank I was raising funds for. His personal items went to families that had children affectted by parents poor chocies.

He is a giving person and simply asked many times over the years to buy it back - Not for free!
BRIAN HAYS
I've had contact with Mr Weaver. It's all good. This IS headed in the right direction.

I'm in on giving $100 to the cause of Jeff buying this back.

Great to finally see that bike.

Pay the man his $31.50 OLDSKOOLPK.

OK so the rumor goes that the third bike I had was lost in a car ACCIDENT. I have never been in a car accident(So far cause i'm a DUI driver). My bike was loaned 2 Randy Robertson(Kuwi hari guy) when i went 2 Desert Storm. He lost it when his parents moved 2 Texas, so 2 all u freaks out there. There is still a third cruiser out there that has not been found(it's not destroyed), it's brobably in Tejas. And if anyone can find my brother there is JU's original JT gear, that i raced with in 84 to win the Cali state champs in, as well as the DYNO stuff we wore in the 1983 season. Oh yea I was there when George and i built the cruisers, i wasn't on the team cause i was fast, I was there cause I helped George build them (Best years of my life)
