I was just talking about Kyle Fleming at lunch today. We talked about all the great riders out of AZ.
Jaydee Finney, Brent Romero, Jason Wharton, Fred Hightower, Mike Ellis, Jon Rana, Galen Starllet (he's known for his sweet mullets) Isn't he from Texas? hehehehe.... Andy Contes, Meat Webster, Jeff Parscale, Alex Pflug, Eric Philiparts, and the list could go on and on my friends!
I raced/rode with Pflug on Team Ferb down here in Tucson before he rode for Colour Control. He was fast and smooth and used to battle with Philiparts <sp?> quite a bit back then (if I remember correctly). I think he works at a car dealership nowadays....not sure though. Coulor Control had a stacked team, that was for sure. One Tucson guy I rode with some before he went up the Phx to work for the ABA was Matt Eggiman. Super cool guy.
There weren't too many fast guys from down here in Tucson in the mid/late 80's really. We did have a decent dirt jumping scene though. We used to go up to Black Mountain, Chandler and Scottsdale and get beat on pretty good. I do remember jumping the canal across the street from Chandler during the Winter Nats...that was always fun.

Hey mark, what's happinin? The Track I think you are talking about was Andalucia at 45th av and Camelback. Do you remember crossing grand Av to get to it? It was on the south side of Camelback next to a funiture wharehouse. The Bike barn was still there at 36th st and Indianschool in 2005 when I left. wasn't there a track for a short time at Tower plaza? Living on that side of towm you must have raced Castleview, Scottsdale Jaycee's and Reservation. Phx was a cool place to be a kid in the 70's and 80's. You wouldn't recognize it now, that's one of the reasons I left, but I still get home sick for it.

Ah, Ice Pallace East, I was a Ice Pallace West sider, funny it was almost like being in a gang. The IP east Hockey guys didn't like the IP west Hockey guys. Tower Plaza (not called that anymore) was still there in 2005 including the ice rink and there was still a nightclub on the east end. most of the west end was torn off to build a new anchor store. Park central mall was cool, they had a "Food Bazzar" much better than a food court you could get ethnic food from something like 12 different countries there. We lived at 12th street and Camelback for a couple months until our house was ready to move into at 45th av and Rose Lane back in 66. My Dad and Brother walked down to Reed Mullin Ford at 16th street and my dad bought a brand new 1966 Galaxie 7 ltr 4spd w/dual quad option. That was such a bad arse car and there was nothin like cruisin Central. Man, the good ol days

Yep I raced it, and I knew all those guys. Ed "Bigfoot", I wish I could remember his last name. Pasquilly, it was pronounced Pass-qual-ee. He and his older Brothers Raced MX at the Beeline MX park as well as ADRA out in Buckeye. That's were I met them. Me and the Clucas brothers raced MX against them, as well as Chappy Mike, Bill Blose, and the nut cases from County Cycle. We were getting support from Southwest Yamaha on 55th ave & Grand. That's kinda how Jeff Clucas and I happened to be in the State Fair Race. We rode two Yamaha Motobikes to show-off and generate sales of them for Southwest Yamaha.

One of my fave if not fave area of any track was the Chandler drop in and the jump out...you could almost leap over the corner/tires at the top and into the berm! Only in AZ can you build those drop ins. In Mn we would call it a mud pit. Chandler had that tricky flat hairpin(took me out in the 1983 Winternat's

)-something you just dont see anymore.

I remember their street, all the yards had berms because they had irregation, it was fun jumping all of them on the way down the street. I won't be the bearer of bad news and tell you how much your pro line would be worth now. That bike was Bad Arse. It was white, correct, with red 7c's, Bellseyes, RL Double clamp stem, Tall V bars, red post, Schwinn Block scrambler gum wall front, comp 3 rear tire. I think we all ran the scrambler tire, the sound they made on smooth concrete was so cool. I work for the City of Champaign Fire Dept as a Building plans reviewer. Moved here to be the Building Official of a small south Chi town suburb, but that was to political and I wouldn't dance. Got into Building inspection/ plan review after an accident working High Steel as an Iron Worker. I have four kids 19,17,10, and 8. my oldest daughter is in the Air force, my oldest son probably will go in to. 3 of them used to race but quit. I started racing again in 2003 at Black Mountain Winter Nationals, and got my Arse handed to me. Kept up with the local races and started winning again. I'm currently not getting much racing in because I live over 2 hrs from a ABA track and am not a big fan of NBL. I still ride as much as I can both BMX and Road. You should come out for the Rockford Gathering (just click on the banner) it is freakin wild! PM me your e-mail and I'll shoot ya some pic's, don't have any of you or Paynes tho, just some of me racing. The rest somehow got tossed by ex wife back in 86, I had a bunch. Even pic's of Road Runner. You know that shop still exists. 67th ave and Deer Valley. The guy who owns it bought it from Bob (tall dark haired 1/2 then full owner) he moved from 43rd and Bethany Home a long time ago.

I liked reservation, didn't race there much because it was clear on the other side of town.
Do you remember the 3 lap enduro races at Castleview? I won a few of those. I was running cross country for Alhambra at the time and did most of my passing after a lap and a 1/2, could have gone a couple more. Crap now, after a couple of hard laps back to back at practice I feel like I'm about to spew. Sucks getting old
Hey Tom, how did you stumble across the site?
Yea. Never ran the indurance. I was quick, but never in great shape for longer hauls. Sprinter:)

Buddha..What's up buddy? I met you out at Chandler last week and bs'd for awhile. I think you should get back on the bike, it keeps us all young. Chandlers track is only two miles away so I'm usually out there every Tues and Fri night. Come on out and we'll try to keep up with all the superfast kids/girls/10 yr.olds/etc. that go out there!!
Galen..I'm an Ohio/Arizona transplant as of a year and a half ago. Are you still in the Phoenix area and do you know what any of the Arizona dirty dozen riders are up to these days. I think the article was from sometime during the summer of 91 in BMXA. I know you posted a picture from it recently in one of the other forums.
NBL49 (Steve, I think)...good to see you out on the track riding the Holmes (awesome bike!). If you guys keep coming out to race, I might actually sign up instead of just practicing and leaving.

Yeah If you had checked it out 5 years ago we probably would have run into each other then. I organized a semi good sized VBMX display at the 2004 Winters at Black Mountain, Reilley1 brought 30+ bikes
I was more of a sprinter too, used to kick the crap out of all the other guys on the Cross Country team when we did wind sprints, did it bare foot too (on the Football field) Running Cross Country was good training for BMX. It provided strength and endurance. We have a complete gym in the basement of the Fire House I'm in and I spend alot of time on the bike, elipticle, and leg machines.

I want to put my 2 cents in too. I remember about the neck accident at Roadrunner Park Track. Back in 97 I snaged a DG out of the attic of the Sun Cyclery on Cactus and 32nd Street. My VDC Gorila was bought from some guy that looked like Carrot Top from the Bike Barn. He had it all rigged up like a "mountain bike". 18 speeds and everything. This was in 87 or so. I rode the hell out of that in the mountain preserves by Dreamy Draw. The only things I would have to contend with was other "punks' on 20 inchers or Horses! Still have the VDC but its a single speed.

WELCOME!
How long ago did you score the DG? You got pretty lucky to have them look or let you look up there. I was in there around 04 and those guys were jerks when I asked about OS BMX stuff, The guy's that were there then were hard core Roadies , and acted like BMX was a disease, what dorks

Have fun on the cruiser. If I remember correctly you didn't race them BITD either. It was a bit difficult getting used to at first. They say they are more forgiving of mistakes than 20s but I don't really buy that. I was much more comfortable on my 20, but race both. Yes your brain will say you can still do it, it's getting your body to finnally agree with your brain that is the tricky part. You remember the Tandem The Paynes had? That thing was alot of fun. Raced a couple of times with Mike on that.

I forgot about the tandem. I agree I don't see the cruiser as more forgiving. I practice with both a 24 and 20. Just going to go out and put around see how things feel. Did some sprints last night.
