Alright it seems about every state has started a thread looking for racers from back in the day, I guess it is time the Bluegrass state Had a thread,,
If you raced BITD in the state of Kentucky at Derby City BMX in Louisville,
Kerney Hills in Lexington or Masterson Station park,
The Madisonville track,
Owensboro when they had a track,
Vastwood,
Earlanger,
Beech Bend Park And the other track they had In Bowling Green,
Henderson
Hopkinsville, Hop Town,
Somerset
Burlington
I'm sure I'm leaving a track or 2 out here, post some pic's if you have any, tell a story or 2, give a list of riders you remember, whatever, lets here it
Also anybody who raced at the NBL Grand nationals Starting in 1984 til the late 80's who cares what state you are from post some pic's if you have em we would love to see em
Or if you were at the NBL war of the stars races in Louisville Ky 1983, or Henderson Ky 1980 and have some pics or Memories to share lets here em,,
we are planning a BMX Reunion/ BBQ at the Derby City Track in Louisville sometime this Spring or Summer Stay tuned for more Details, We would love to see Anyone And Everyone who Raced In the Bluegrass State Attend,,Go to Derby City BMX web site for futher Details

Rick Pokorowski Here....
I am from Louisville......
rode Co- sponsor with the cycle craft guys...
Mike and George Frazier...
Jimmy Levan actually helped me learn how to jump and control my bike..
Raced every weekend out there.. nationals for 2 years..
besides Jimmy...
Ronnie Ellman was my riding buddy
Raced alot against
Sean Portman.. Stephen Vickers..Bean.. and a bunch more....
Was in Love with (15 year old love) Bonnie West....
Not Susy.... line every one else...
Raced state.. so whatever tracks i had to hit.. dont remember all the names..
First year state number 1
The frazies made me a cool crit plate with my state number on one side my national on the other....
some parents got mad.. cause i wasnt number 1 yet.... but i still rode it with my 12 up front....
next year got state #2
For awhile I had Bonnie West's Blue Zeronine Plate.. she gave to me at the state finals when she won Number 1...
I need to scan and post some pics!!!!!
My time was the real late 80s.... like maybe early 87.. to early 90.. when I moved to Florida..
I was on the KY team In OHIO twice.... well once... one year i didnt want to wear or pay for the outfit or whatever...
LOL

Thats funny you mention Bonnie's name, we hung out for awhile in the early ninties, she even stayed with us at our hotel during spring break at Panama City, maybe 93? It was the year of the largest snow storm in history of Alabama.

Bonnie looked like she might turn out to be cute, Did she ?, I feel like a perv saying that since the last time I seen bonnie she was about 12 maybe 13, ... Mike and George were alright guy's, I talked to Jimmy Levan and his sister and mom just yesterday, we are getting together a reunion at Derby City don't know the date yet but it is looking like last weekend in April or sometime around the Grands in Sept, Ponch I know you will be there,, rlowride you should try and make it out, also if you happen to know George or Mikes phone number or Email PM me so i can let them know,,

Joey, we let her and her friend stay in our room for free if that tells you something. Turned out pretty cute, haven't seen her in about 8 years.
About the old school reunion I would pick teh April date and not the Grands. Their is just so much stuff going on it would be hard to just sit around and relax. If it was in April or sometime besides Grands weekend we could have a couple of old school races, bunnyhop contest, etc.

Sorry I missed riding with you guys today, I just got home when you emailed me, next time it looks like it is going to be warm give me a day's notice,
Hmmmmmm wouldn't throw em out of the hotel, I remember her dad Joe kicking me out of the track for throwing a clip board at him, the had to get a park ranger to escort me to my car, it was like a state qualifer race or something I don't remember, but Mr. Frazier put a kid named Shane Cahoon or David Cloyd in our moto, Mr frazier's son George was in my age class, but David Or Shane were not but they raced on the same team as George all i remember is I was leading the race and got T-boned in the first turn real hard, I'm sure it was Shane and not David, but david was pretty fast so it could have been him, But anyway when i got up George was coming down the straight that goes by the first turn, and I picked my bike up and threw it at him, I went down to complain that David or Shane shouldn't have been in our moto there were enough riders for them to have teir own moto and that I thought that Mr. frazier put em in there to wreck me, I thought that Mr. West was going to listen to me but he told me he would have if I wouldn't have thrown my Bike at George, so i grabbed his clipboard and threw it at him hitting him in the neck,,,man I was such a young punk,,,

Really, nothing happeded that Spring break week, just a couple of real funny stories that I'll tell later, not about her but about her friend that rode down with her.
Seriously though, A friend of mine ran into her last year at the Juvenile diabetes walk, turns out one of her kids has Juvinile Diabetes.
Bonnie also had a brother that used to race, he had some jumps and trails that I went to a couple of times in his neighboorhood.

Kevin,,
yes Little Billy west yep I remember him, he was a 9 year old when i was 16,,
(liitlt note)
I was telling a story on here about me throwing my bike at George Frazier, because I thought that one of his teammates wrecked me, i said i thought it was either David Cloyd, or Shane Cahoon, I was looking through some old BMX crap I found in a box and it made me remember who it was ,,it was Mike Duvall, Tommy you would remember him you guys raced in the same class, fraziers dad claimed he put him in my moto because there wasn't enough guys at tom Sawyer to race in his class,,hell looking at this paper i'm looking at you guys had the most riders in your class,
Chad Estes, Mike Duvall, You Tommy, Scott Whobrey, Scott Chaney, lee Douglas, Kenneth Smith, Don Mahaffey, Norman Mims, tid Griffin, christopher Dillbeck, Chris Lovell, patrick Richardson, that was all thr rider in Mike Duvall's class in 1986, but yet Mr. frazier stuck mike in our 16 expert class and i got T-Boned in the first turn,

Feb 11 2008, 07:16 PM
Not yet I was thinking April 26th or 27th,,but finding a bunch of people I haven't seen nor talked to in over 20 years is a bit harder than I thought it would be, so maybe August might be better, give me more time to plan, I talked to a lady at the volocity magazine about doing a story on Old School BMX, if she goes for it that will be cool then maybe it might be easier to find some people, they see the story and the fact that we are planning a reunion then that would be cool but the problem is that she said it takes a few months to do a story then publish it,,Just keep putting the word out,,I really thought there would be more Ky BMXers on here but I guess I was wrong,, Looks like if we lived in Minn, NJ or elsewhere we wouldn't have a problem, so far we seem to be limited to VBMX members,

Mike and I still keep in touch regularly. we had some battles....bike tossing, take outs...all facilitated by the CC guys in my opinion...
I talk to Jason Herrick ever once in awhile...best friends throughout our childhood and he's responsible for me getting into BMX. Lives less than a mile from me and we see each other maybe once a year...that sucks.
I was pretty much motofill after 1986. Jason was the man to beat out there. Factory MCS hot shot. The rest of us wished we were that fast.
I feel as though I'm a late bloomer of the Louisville BMX racing scene.

This isn't George, I'm his wife. PLaying around on the net I found this site. I think George still has about a million BMX trophies stored in our loft. George has a son now. George Frazier III. I hope to keep him OFF a BMX bike...maybe a mountain bike, but not BMX.

Anyway, I'll tell George about this site.

My head is overloading with memories here. I'm just going to fire some of them off.
Joey Sears I do remember you and your Louisville area based crew at the tracks with bikes and people loaded to the max in whatever you rolled to the races in. Seemed like gates, racing and good times were the intentions and were well gathered in.
Derby City BMX. The days of dirt berms. Loaded into the Soper's van or wagon heading westbound out of Lexington on I-64 to Louisville. Post grands 1987 freshly lipped jumps tossing me like an out of control bottle rocket. Not much shade other than our staked into the ground canopies. Some guy's rusted inside Hutch exploding into pieces after he cased a jump there. $100 doubles. "Shut er down Parnell" echoing on the PA system at the grands. Soaked dew grass making the Vans not stick to the pedals very well on grands almost frost temps or post rainy nights mornings. Rick Pokorowski, Ronnie Ellman, The Wests, John Molnar, The Lausmans, The Frankfort crew of Eddie Lewis/Chris Sutton, Tommy Board, Jason Herrick, Brad from IN, Darren Barnes, Jay Becht, Dan's Comp's first vending trailer, Nothing but grass fields surrounding the track area, getting schedules in the mail, driving over 3 hours from Paintsville just to race locals there etc.
The Frazier camp and all of their riders, efforts and BMX life times. Those folks they did a whole lot for BMX racing in Kentucky. I last saw George at a mountain bike race at Bike Butler in Carrollton,KY 1999. Funky memory about rolling to get some supplies for the track while in Henderson with George and us jamming La Bamba in 1987? The Cycle Craft blue and white fades. George Sr putting forth a lot of effort in Bowling Green while based in Louisville? That was stout. Matt Slyter, David Cloyd, Mike 8 foot Duvall. Krazy Glued headsets. Zeronine.
Jimmy, Susie and Karen LeVan's super fine friendships, hospitality and welcoming their deal/home to all riders style. Moto Moms brought us the good stuff to Kearney Hills in Lexington. I remember their van being packed and when they'd unload. People be buying it up and hanging out. Years of riding and staying with them in Louisville. Very good years with them.
I think the rider in the black Zeronine stuff may be Bryan Ward.
That's me in the blank white jersey/black sweats at Masterson Station Park in Lexington. Thanks for sharing that pic. The other rider who is in the yellow Zeronine stuff is Ronnie ? who lived around the block from the Soper family in Lexington. You may remember his last name Joey. Looking at my Free Agent in that pic it looks short with the bars high. Check the short stem length on Ronnie's bike!
Steve Smith ah yeah. Long live 185s with 48/14 gears, no weak Coasters trails in Middletown, wall rides or manuals for miles. Take it back to chrome and slamming gates down quadzilla style.
I think I got the answer to the last pic. Rick Pokorowski, Steven Vickers, Ronnie Ellman, Billy West, Bonnie West? Maybe?
More later.

I think I got the answer to the last pic. Rick Pokorowski, Steven Vickers, Ronnie Ellman, Billy West, Bonnie West? Maybe?
More later.

I wish I would have stayed with it back in 83/84. Sounds like I missed alot fun racing action. My first race was at the old track, was that 82 or 83? does anyone have any pics of the first Tom Sawyer track? Anyway I raced about 4-6 times total then I went back to hanging out with all the riders at Okolona Schwinn and heading to the "Dip" or the jumps located behind Southern's Football field. Sometimes we just rode forever looking for jumps.
About 86 or 87 I got my License then quit riding all together. Around 89 or 90 I started riding alittle. Went out to the track with Paul Prestis, Adam Cox and another guy from Schwinn named Rusty? After a few times riding I found I could clear the pro section, well more like a triple step up. One time when I was out there I bent my forks and some girl racer was riding a White bear? She recommended the white bear forks, bent those after about two months.
Anyway now I'm back into racing and love it. Been going just about every weekend having a blast. As a matter of fact heading to Indy Saturday morning for a regional.
The pic that was posted above, the only person I recognize is Bonnie on the far right.
Looking forward to the reunion
Kevin

Glad to see you surface it is great to here from ya, send me a PM and I will give you my email address so I can give you a date for the reunion when I find a date,
rolling to the races with a bike rack and a car full of people, yes those were the fun days, I remember I was always picking up the local punks in the neighborhood and taking em to races trying to keep everyone into BMX,
I remember that race in Lexington, the one with you in the pic, I took Doug Curry, Brian Brennanstel, and 3 or 4 more guys down there with me in a junky old toyota, Doug Curry Disappears for a few hours after his moto's and I can't find him anywhere, Finally after i was about to give up on him and leave him in Lexinton, Brian comes and gets me and informs me that the have him detained at the prison next to the track,
I'm thinking what the Hell,, come to find out his father was in the prison and doug brian and Steve howard were riding their bikes over there to pay a visit, and Doug got snatched up by security, but Brian and Steve Howard were quick enough to get away and come tell me, we loaded up the bikes and drove over ther to get him, but he did get to pay his father a visit
MAN WHAT GOOD TIMES !!!!!1
