The lived around the block from the Soper family in Lexington rider in the yellow Zeronine gear named Ronnie is Ronnie Taylor. cool.gif

Joey, That story about Doug Curry, the prison and the A Team BMX style visitation invasion ruled. You guys had to be wondering where he was until finding out. I remember something that I think was your crew but not sure. Some riders come over to Lexington for a back to back race weekend and stayed at some motel and some wound up riding around New Circle Road then on to the track from being left behind or just dropped off or something. Was that your crew? laugh.gif

Eddie Lewis used to pile locals into his truck in Frankfort and bring them to the races. I at times would bring locals from Paintsville too. Those days were awesome. Didn't care about anything else much other than riding BMX bikes and being around the scene as often as possible. I feel some BMX roots surfacing here.

Another rider from Louisville that I thought about was Travis Dooley. That kid got fast and took it all level headed.

I think Mike Lausman is the most accomplished KY BMX racer of all time. He got a low single digit national plate so many times. He rode so much around Louisville when I'd go over there to ride. He could shred street and the track very well.

Greg Beller of KY was the big factory Profile dude in the early 80's and I never was at a track when he was but I remember him getting big props in print.

1983 was the first time that I went to Kearney Hills in Lexington. Freddie Hooper, Nichols brothers, Cundiff, the Howard brothers, Tichenor etc were names I remember from my first race.

Steve Smith, I like that pic that you posted. Looks like the 1989 NBL grands where that year you scored I think #1 cruiser and #2 twenty inch right? Is that Brian Gagnon just behind you? and I see Todd Lyons in the pic too. Full pull big gears school. cool.gif

More later about Lexington folks!

Todd

That probably was my crew, In fact I believe that was the last time I ever raced in lexington, masterson station park, I brought some guys down with me for a 2 day race thinking that well I'm paying for the gas, I'm sure someone will bring enough money to pay for a hotel for the night, But no such luck,
we ended up spending the Night in triangle park in Downtown lexington, Hanging out with all of these punks, well some chick talks me into driving her home around 7 am so well you know me i can't leave a chick hanging like that, I leave taking maybe Doug or Brian with me and leaving the others behind at the park I tell em I will be back to pick em up before the races start, come to find out this chick lives on a huge Horse farm with a Guarded gate, We try and sneek her in with out her dad finding out, RIGHT!!! he is there to meet us with a few words and something about a gun, Keeps us there a little longer than we wanted to be, by the time we made it back to triangle park the others were gone, Hell they could have been murdered I didn't care nothing could keep me from racing BMX so I decided to head to the track I wasnt going to miss gate practice, They Showed up at some point riding their bikes, GOOD TIMES IN LEXINGTON!!!!!
Todd E
Joey, I liked that story about you and your crew camping out in Triangle Park with the punks and taking some chick home to her daddy at their horse farm. laugh.gif

I'd so like to time warp back 20 years to those BMX racing years!

I want to give some props to some families around Lexington that helped the BMX happen for me.

The Howards, Sopers, Myers and Vickers families often helped to make it possible so that I could attend races, snap the gates and crank. Many good times shared with them via the racing and every day life in general thanks to BMX! smile.gif

Loved going to the old Kerney Hills track,,remember being pissed when I found out they were making it a golf course,,its kind of funny I have played in about 15 golf tourneys there, But back when I was racing Bikes I thought golf was goofy and to close a BMX track down to build a golf course was stupid,,,they did a good job on the course,

Matt Howard His dad and brother were good people and they did a great job with that Kerney Hills track,,,seen Mike and His brother 2 years ago,

Hey, Dean Howard here. I just saw this thread which is a couple of months later. I am from Owensboro and raced from 1976 to 1980. I was there when they built the Owensboro track.
Breckley Tipton owned a bike shop here in Owensboro and just sold out in 2006. John Hayden works for Sheltra Motorsports ARCA car racing team. I haven't heard from Greg Beller since I quit racing. I got my boys into it last year and now I am getting back into bmx racing at age 42.
Other noteable names that I remember: Todd Libs, Kevin Hoosier, Tony Nurse, Wesley Robertson, Brian Luttrell, Lynn Ball, Rodney Smith, Mike Whitaker, Don Beasley and many more. Hey, do you remember the SST Stryker team that started up? Might have been before your time. It was 1979.
I will post some pics of me at the Owensboro track in 1979. I quit in 1980 after breaking my ankle at the 1979 Jag World Championships in Indy. Won 2 motos, and the 3rd moto I popped a wheelie at the finish line and flipped back. Was torn up that I didn't get to run the main cause of the ankle. I was 14x back then.

This is in Owenboro in 1979. The first year for the track. I am riding a Peddlepower which is
when they were just converting over to Powerlite.
In 2nd place there is John Jourdan and in 4th is Mike Whitaker.

One last pic of Owensboro in 1979 coming out of the 2nd turn. Don Beasley is in 2nd, I think he
was from Henderson or Evansville, and Mike Whitaker from Owensboro is in 3rd.

You know, it is really cool to see this whole thread. I quit after 1980 and went car racing for 17 years and then worked with NASCAR for another 10. I got my boys into bmx after hearing it was still around in 2007 and started them at the closest track at Burdette Park in Evansville. I just went out yesterday and bought me all of the equipment I need to get back into it to try to get back in shape.

I don't know what I have missed all of these years. Racing in Evansville, Henderson, Bowling Green, Nashville, Indy, Wakarusa Indiana, and a few other places was a blast back then.

The Date for the Reunion and race is this weekend July 26th at the Derby City Track in louisville hope to see everyone there,,,,we will be racing so bring a bike if you have one, (nothing serious) we will be having a Bike show also so bring your old school bike any old parts and pictures
Jsea73
The Reunion and Show will Start around NOON and will go until we feel like we have had enough, Derby City will be having a Battle of the Villes race around 2, and then a Local race 45 Min after the Battle of the Villes races are over, we will probably be doing the old school races During the local races so don't feel rushed to get to the track at NOON, we have all day, I'm guessing we will be racing around 3/4/5 Oclock depending on the amount of moto's at the battle of the Villes race, the Bike show will be set up along the first straight if you plan on bringing a bike to show, you should plan on getting there around Noonish just so we can get everything all set up, There will be a reg table for the Old School race set up Along the first straight,
steve smith
Im pretty roughed up from chasing moreland at crashville ....If my son will go and let me come maybe i can root for a tommy gun/lausman matchup...

DeanHoward
I do have all of the gear to race now. But I wear out before the first turn. LOL!! I might get out there with you guys and have some fun though but we better keep the medics close by.

Really though, I need to get my butt back in shape and start racing again. After seeing all of the wrecks at Nashville and people getting hurt, it was hurting me, and I wasn't even out there. Just need to overcome my old age, haven't done it in a while fears.

See yas there,

Jimmy, Susie and Karen LeVan's super fine friendships, hospitality and welcoming their deal/home to all riders style. Moto Moms brought us the good stuff to Kearney Hills in Lexington. I remember their van being packed and when they'd unload. People be buying it up and hanging out. Years of riding and staying with them in Louisville. Very good years with them.

More later.

MY MOM HAS THE BEST PARTS,
Ponch
Just talked to Paul Prestis, he still has his bike plus alot of parts but won't be able to make it down. He said tell everyone hey!

DeanHoward
Kelvin Quick? I don't guess I recall him. Greg Beller, haven't talked to him in years but heard he works somewhere in Muhlenberg County 30 miles from here.

Also, I was gonna talk with John Hayden (we're still good friends and ex work buddies) but I think he has an ARCA race to go to. He's a crew chief on one of those cars.

Also there is a guy here named Brian Luttrell that used to race when I did. He live about a block from me and I told him about it. He wants to go. He still has his old JMC and wants to bring it. I think it's his old one, might just be a replica.

Notables from around here: I have no idea of there whereabouts.
Todd Libs: was sponsored by MCS for a while in 1978, '79.
Tony Nurse: Moved to Cali for a while to be on Team Jag in '78
Chad Cornelius: Had a Factory Hutch sponsorship in I think '79 or '80

Dino
Jsea73
Dean

I talked to Greg Beller on the phone today He is Going to do his best to make it, I will PM you his Phone Number, You guys can get in Touch,

Also tell Brian to Bring his JMC we will be more that happy to see it, Looks Like most everyone still has their old Bikes should be a good selection of Old School Bikes

OK....I say this needs to be the official Kentucky BMX thread, any stories or pics from the 70's and 80's can be posted here if you would like,

We just had a reunion at the Derby City BMX track in louisville on the 26th of July, I would like to thank everyone for taking the time out of your weekend on such a short notice to attend, I had a great time and I hope everyone did the same, the old school race was a blast, it felt great to get back on the track after all of these years,(even if I did fall on my A@$ in the last moto),
I want to thank Ed Reinhart and everyone at Derby City BMX for being such a big Help in making the reunion a success.

I want to thank everyone who saved all of their pictures, bikes, trophies, number plates, all of these years, and brought them out for everyone to enjoy. John Tichenor was kind enough to leave me his collection of pictures and a bunch of the local Ky BMX newsletters we had BITD, the Radical Review, He had to leave early to attend a wedding, So in the next few days I will scan as many pics and race results from the local tracks as I can, before I return the goods back to Johnny T,

Once again thanks everyone for attending, I hope everyone had a great time, and you never know we might start having semi's and mains in the Old guys class,,
