I've been a lurker for some time but haven't posted. However, I've been curious if there's a tribute post to the vintage department store bikes that most of us started on.

I was also curious if the serious collectors buy the lower end bikes to add to their collections?

There is a dept. store thread around here somewhere I think. It's been a while, but thanks to that thread, I found a KMart/Murray All-Pro. It was the first bike I had as a kid, so I had to have it when I saw it. I'm sure it cost me more than it cost my parents in 1979.

Now if I can just track down an 83 Kent Copperhead...

Yeah, I think there are guys who'll buy one out of sentimentality. I like seeing a Huffy Pro Thunder every now and then, but I don't particularly want one again.

This is the best thread I've ever seen that fits the description of what you're talking about. Timo (2FRESH), who just won the Freestyle Bike of the Year award here, takes an old department store bike and transforms it into something fantastic. A great pictorally documented story about rebuilding his first bike.

I'd buy a nice rust-free Team Murray X20R or X20C (or X24R or X24C) if I found one in someone's garage, definitely. Actually, the last department-store bike I found was a yellow-and-blue Pro Thunder in a trash pile. It was in nice condition and I probably should have rescued it but I just took its Tuff Wheels and left the rest for the scrap metal guys. What was I thinking?
