I've been looking around the net and people have been putting 47-80 cc two stroke gas engines on mountain bikes and beach cruisers. I was blown away that they go 30 40 mph on average and keep the drivetain in tact and claim 150 mpg. Wondering if anyone has any experience with these. I would love to see this on a bmx20 or 24 inch cruiser. Might be the next big thing, I know I want one, in fact since I was a kid I'd been saying man if I could only put an engine on this bike!!

Just when I thought I had seen it all!!!

Got the idea from a guy selling this custom frame on ebay. It has no cranks so it's not a bicycle really.

A mountain bike with 80 cc motor kit.

my sponsor bike shop has been doing alot of these kits. pretty sweeet

around here you can't use them. if it goes more than 5mph you can't go on sidewalks with them. if it isn't/can't be licensed by the DMV/DOT, it can't be used on the streets.

this came to light talking with a cop a couple years ago during the powered scooter craze. same deal with those.

BITD my Grandfather had a NOS Wizzer motor he said he could put on my Pro Performer, but I declined. He died in 2000 and my aunt sold it to a museum in Ohio for four grand or something like that.

Mat Hoffman rigged a motor up to a 20" and used to ride his ji-mungous halfpipe with it.

I wonder if they are legal for off road use. I would'nt want one for around town riding or jumping, flatland etc.. I want one for the mountain trails up here with big long uphills that are no fun to go up on my bmx bikes. I almost had a heart attack the last big hill I climbed. Going downhill is a different story!!

Sure hope the man does'nt ruin this one. I think if it's under 49cc's and can be pedaled it is a power assisted bicycle. I think it's like alot of things regarding the law. If you are responsible and don't act like a lunatic the cops don't give a f*** what you do.

My 2 cents.

Yeah a Gt pro performer or freestyle tour might work with the downtube shape it has and the higher toptube. I dont like how these kits mount to the rear hub. I think a DK dual drive hub might work best. It also looks like the kit weighs close to 20 lbs with gas. No big deal I rode a 91 Haro master for a while that weighed 40lbs. I just keep thinking how cool it would be to fly around and go 30mph uphill without breaking a sweat. I read that some people are putting the high revving and lightweight pocket motorcycle engines in their bicycles but it is not available as a kit yet.

I am hoping someone can give some pointers on what works and what does'nt with these things.

several guys at my work have done builds, most 26"ers. they get together and ride sometimes. word I get from them is make sure the motor will fit " IN " the frame unless you want to and can modify it yourself. AND , they all said they can go ALOT faster than their braking system can handle !!! one of my coworkers is even a distibutor for a kit. looks like a lot of fun too. I've seen some that have an electric motor front hub, a dual power assist !!! there are laws about engine size being a power assist vs a motorized vehicle and the same with the electric motors, to do with top speed ratings......still would be a fun project, if I had about $500.00 bucks to blow.

Well so much my credit card balance!! I went ahead and ordered a kit and all the other lhd hubs and stuff it is going to need. I even got a cheap mountain bike for this project. I think it gave me cooties, I am oldschool bmx for sure and have always been allergic to mountain bikes. It was funny when pulling the "made in China" sticker off the headtube I could see that the Iron Horse badge was stuck on with sticky tape.

That totally reminded me of Rick Moliterno in his "covert operations" video where he was talking about overseas junk and "your name here " brand of bicycles. Seems all the complete bikes are made in the same couple of factories. Now why someone would pay $4000 for a mountain bike that is made with mostly the same materials in the same factory as that $38 bike in wall mart is unclear. Now make a 50lb motorcycle/bicycle that will go 30mph up hill without pedalling,,,,,Now that might be worth something.

I've got a little scooter with, what is essentailly a chainsaw motor on it.
Let me tell ya, it scoots. For years I've been planning how to
integrate it into SOME sort of bicycle.

And the comment about the brakes not keeping up, TRUE!
The little back wheel has a drum brake that doesn't even
come close to stopping this thing. Regardless of dialness.

I'll post some pics one day but its at my other place right now.

Well I got it running. It was by far the hardest build I've ever done. It runs good and am having fun with it. The bike weighs about 50 lbs so my bmx bikes sure seem lite. I sure wish they'd fit on a bmx but the engine is so big it hardly fits in a large mtb bike.
check it out!!

Yeah, one of the guys I work with has one as his main means of transporttion. He rides it 9 miles each way to work every day and puts gas in it once every three weeks or so. Pretty sweet.
