This bike was found by my friend NOS hanging in a bike shop in 2001, just hanging there all this time, along with a complete blue 1980 team mongoose and an 1980 redline proline but that's another story. He picked up the LG fork on it at the same time , it also was NOS. He then built it up with shimano 600 cranks and, then rode it around the block a few times. He needed cash so I ended up with it. If anyone can tell me what year it is or any other details that would be awesome. The serial # is RA49401. Thanks in advance. Jesse

Could some race inc. fans please help me out, I thought this one would be a layup. Who's has the knowledge, or maybe no replies cause I'm new.
BRIAN HAYS
There is no way to tell a Race Inc year by the serial number. Race Inc made RA7's from the beginning in 1976 until 1982. They went under in 1984. If the lug behind the BB is one piece (not a weld seam down the center on the underside) then it is a 78-82. If the lug is welded, then it would be a 77 most likely. NICE BIKE MAN!!!!

BTW, welcome to the site.
jus2many
Thanks Brian your the man, are you in IL, going to rockford this year?

Jesse

PEP
In Brian's eyes there's no way to tell...tongue.gif

In my eyes, I'm sayin 1980 RA-7 & she's a looker. Great scoop & welcome to the site.

Shut up HAYS....just come to terms with me knowing more about Race Inc's than you, LOL
BRIAN HAYS
Jus2many, you can just ignore that ^^^^^^ guy. smile.gif

Ya, I live in IL and am planning on Rockford but we'll see.

Pep likes to believe that the 4th digit is the year BUT that is bad info. If that was the case, my two RA10's that were only made in 83 and 84 would be 77 and 79 frames. He's built one too many freestyle bikes. rolleyes.gif
PEP
cool.gif You still my boy hays......

OK, the 4th digit works for some & not for others. biggrin.gif

Also, take a look a the dropouts, not the pointy FMF style drops. Race Inc. used those kind of droputs till at least 1979. That would make the frame at least a *gasp* 1 9 8 0 !!!! ohmy.gif cool.gif

chicagopat
Are you guys seriously questioning "Brian Hays?" We all know that he is the Race inc KING! cool.gif

PEP
ph34r.gif I see my Kung Fu is not superior to yours.

What up Alex!
BRIAN HAYS
Pat. These two are right. I know everything I do about Race Inc because of them.

There. I said it. Now I don't have to be nice to you guys ever again this year. tongue.gif

Hahahahahahaha, true!

I tell ya, what Brian knows NOW in regards to SE and Race Inc. is far more than I'll ever know. Hes taken it to misty mountain top hermit guru status, lol. laugh.gif

Whats up Chris?!!

Mr. Hays, the man, the myth, the legend himself, at Rockford, I dont know, what do you think PEP? Will the search continue? If you do decide to show up, will you be bringing Monica sir? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, I'll wash your GTO!!! biggrin.gif

Brian won't show...its part of his rock star personna. Kinda like Axel Rose always cancelling shows or the Led Zepplin reunion constantly being delayed or setback, lol.
PEP

Brian, I had had several Race Incs over the years and never got real serious about finding out the years. Mine had a welded seam on the lug behind the bottom bracket and no serial #. Does this mean it is a 77? It also has the pointy drop outs like the FMFs. Any info would be appreciated.
PEP
how long is the gussett behind the seatpost? I'd wager a guess of 77/78. Then comes the guess of Laguna, Raleigh.....brake bridge or no brake bridge...Damn Bill Bastain, LOL
BRIAN HAYS
If it has a welded lug, then it is mid 78 or earlier. ALL the Bastian built frames had the welded lug up until Scot (OM) started making SE frames (built at Race Inc by Bastian). At this point Scott contracted Alcoa to make a one piece (unwelded) lug and all the Bastian built frames from then on had the unwelded lug.

Like Pep said, let's see a picture. Welded Lug with FMF drops is one thing BUT does it have the short or long seat stay gusset and does it have a brake bridge?

GR8, It kinda freaks me out that you named my bike tongue.gif , but yes if I show, I will have it with me.

As far as the GTO. PLEASE step away. I very rarely put water on that car. cool.gif

It does have a brake bridge. Does it not having a serial # mean anything or is just one that was missed and got two left side drop outs or something. I will try and get some pics in the AM.
BRIAN HAYS
Race Inc started making frames in 76 but didn't start using serial numbers till 79 or 80. Most all the Race Inc frames with diamond dropouts had no serial number and the later flat botton drops had RAxxxx serial numbers BUT I have seen a couple of diamond dropout frames WITH a serial number too.
