are you going to show me a pic of those forks when they get fixed?

QUOTE (BenOr @ Jan 25 2008, 11:54 PM) *
You must agree with me or I will "will" you off the site.

Hi, this is BenOr again. It seems like this is as good a time as any to point out that Elvis is actually a duplicate account I keep to do the dirty work around here, so everyone can think I'm a nice guy. (Because I'm stinking rich, I hire some doofus to play Elvis every year at Rockford.)

So seriously, don't screw with me or I'll log on as Elvis and ban you.

QUOTE
Then again this has absolutely nothing to do with Oz or this thread. The internet thing is wonderful and *%$@ed up.

Man, that last line was some of my best work ever right there. I'd type more but I threw my shoulder out patting me on the back.

G3nius indeed.

Steve, I am very happy I was able to snag those. I think you will be very surprised when you see the end result of what they go on. Sorry I cannot give you any more info here on an open forum.

So Ben-or-Elvis, maybe you and your inner daemon should spend some of your life insurance money on a little therapy. wacko.gif
Ted Carl
Greeeaaaaat ,...now we have dirty "Sock Puppets" to wash too.... ohmy.gif

(edit; I think I went over a few heads here...

A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception within an Internet community. In its earliest usage, a sockpuppet was a false identity through which a member of an Internet community speaks while pretending not to, like a puppeteer manipulating a hand puppet.

sock-puppeting" is defined as "the act of creating a fake online identity to praise, defend or create the illusion of support for one’s self, allies or company

...a sockpuppet is the active exploitation of the pretense that the puppet is a third party who is not affiliated with the puppeteer )

So Elvis is really "Socko?" blink.gif Or is Socko really Elvis? OR is Ben, Socko's Elvis puppet?

Seemed like the kinda down to earth dude that would be fun to chat with if our kids were at the same birthday party at Chuck E Cheese. but my only question, is why did you up and jump ship when Oz drew the line in the sand. oh well, we all gotta choose sometimes....

I post when and where it intrests me. I am members of several bmx related sites. I don't post regularly on any of them. I'll throw in a one liner or two and step aside. Like haselrod said, i am not political. I am a cyclist. And yes I have choosen sides; Baked over mashed, steamed veggies over rice, fruit over fries.

I've been taping a picture of Stu T. on my jock strap for years, didn't realize I should be paying royalties to Oz.....

Need it autographed?

LMAO Stu!!!! Good one there! Is that what I need to do to get an autograph I've wanted for 25 years???

I've read many parts of this thread & am still confused as to what happened. I missed what went down in the past w/ Oz & crew leaving the site & I probably don't want to know what went down. Business is business & it should not get in the way of friendships. Unfortunately at times it does. I have met very few people from this site, but I consider most of you my friends. In the 80's I had a sub to BMXA for years. Oz was the MAN for putting that mag out. Stu was my racing idol cuz I had a Redline. I hated Greg cuz he was Stu's major rival. Little did I know they were close friends & Greg was married to Stu's sister. But that was then. I met Greg at my local teack when he did a clinic. He was a stand up, approachable guy. I ran into him at the Rock in 05. I met Oz there too. As well as Scot, Toby, Utterback, etc. ALL a great bunch of guys. Whatever happened, happened. Get over it. It's done. We have a site. They have a site. Who cares who has more members? Trashing people, other sites, whatever is bad for the sport. I give up coming on here at times & don't post on here much because of all the petty drama & bs. I've been bashed for stepping up to defend Bill Ryan. I know people have had issues w/ him in the past. I understand that. He's always been good to me, he supports the sport in many ways, & I consider him a friend. I still admire Oz & Greg for all they have done for the sport. Wea re all allowed to have opinions, but if you don't have first hand knowledge on things (me included) shut up & stop throwing bombs. What's done is done. Get past it & enjoy life. stay here or go to BMXAO. Or visit both. Life is way too short. This thread needs to be locked if the back & forth crap continues. It's way past done.

teh humor never stops in this internets thread.

serious statement: I sent Stu a PM and apologized for my ornery sense of humor that bordered on mean spiritedness. He's one cool guy and I was totally wrong in my previous boundary setting statement. not cool of me but so glad I was wrong. I never stood out at any BMX activities but being a Dad and husband I can tell you I excel at being wrong... smile.gif

BS statement, well maybe I'm serious?.....:Elvis! Baked potatoes?! I'd expect as much from a blueberry pie lovin Yankee. Get some mashed taters and apple pie already, you maniac.

NOw back to teh controversy:
Stu you were noted as one of teh first to do a helicopter in teh 70s, but then we see this young upstart doing YOUR trick and calling it a 360. Soooo, teh burning question, was this taught willingly to this young jedi apprentice or was it stolen.....ahem and oi vay!!

"teh" would have been a 1-cent word back in the '70s, but wasn't coined until teh internets were invented by Al Gore. If you figure the worth of "teh" factoring in inflation it would be about a 13-cent word at the opening bell on Monday.

"bloviate", on the other hand, was going for about $1.79 last time I checked... tongue.gif

Bridgecity, I wish I would have looked closer at your last post. I thought you were challenging the validity of Stu doing the 1st 360. When in fact you were poking fun at Stu and Gary. I scanned in 4 pages of a BX Weekly from October 19, 1975 to prove my point.

I could have told you Stu was a cool guy if you would have asked? But then again, I am biased. wink.gif
Stu Thomsen
It was so long ago I don't think the word 360 was invented yet let alone the internets. I think it was originally supposed to be called a whirligig or whirlybird. I didn't make it to the patent office on time and the statute of limitations ran out. Then before you know it everybody is copying it and the rest is history. I have no ill feelings torwards Gary. It was rare that he could get coverage [magazine] and he did what he had to do. You know the saying, we invent it but somebody else makes it better.

The great thing about Stu, and alot of the other guys from back then, is you could easily find a pic of them at a race, as well as riding a skate park, or doing a 360. These guys rode BMX, not just raced. How many top pros today can pull a 360?

Don't worry I'll go wipe my nose now.
guest_070901
Red Baron: Would you mind posting those pics you scanned? I know we'd love to see em. the BMXA I have from somewhere between 76 and 80 simply mentions Stu as the inventor of the helicopter, no good pics.

That pic came from the CW Nationionals covered by BAD -1984. I remember last year when I saw Gary posting I didn't recognize his name, then I saw a freestyle ad of him in full regalia with some teammates. GT and Josh White maybe? I forget... then I ran across that little snippet and thought it was kinda cool because he had race roots.

Agreed. There is only so much you can do with veggies, but unlimited possibilities with rice. Zatarans dirty rice with diced broccoli and cauliflower, YUM!

It's hard to mess up a baked potato unless you or the resturant makes it's own sour cream, butter, and other toppings. It's real easy to screw up gravy, and mashed w/o gravy is un-American biggrin.gif

Nate Birkmeimer comes to mind when you mention flips.

T.L. was the first to do a flip in a actual race. I want to say it was at ABA event at West World in Phoenix. It might have been Burbank though. It was SICK!

I'd say most could, or do. You won't see it much on a race day 'cause it's a great way to tweak a wheel (if not a knee), but yeah. In fact if you're a top pro you either have trail skills or you're not a top pro.

Here are 2 old entries from TL. (searched all forums for teh word flip by TL)

"Looking Back Now:
I think I may have been one of the first riders to flip a mountain bike. This was well over a decade ago, back in the fall of 1994. It's funny, sometimes I open up a current mountain bike magazine & I see a full page ad with a dude doing a flip. Shoot, I was bustin' that like 13 years ago! LOL… It's all good though, flips are still the one of the funnest tricks out there.

Dingo,
Nope. I don't have a video clip of that one. I remember that was a shady double to flip! You know what's funny? I did a flip this summer in my moto (30+ men) at the World Champs in Brazil. But I was winning. And I stayed in the lead. That was the first time that I'd ever pulled a flip while actually winning a race.

Chris,
I don't think I ever 360'd the big triple at the X-Mas classic. Big can-cans, yes. But 360's? I don't think so."
DMG
Dang Bill, you take the fun out of everything, or was that BenOr, or Elvis, or just a sockpuppet.........

Mmmmmm........Sockpuppet cool.gif
Gary Haselhorst
The 360 was early 80's done at an ABA national in Bakersfield. Miranda and Medrano were getting the crowd going doing some jumping during practice. I was looking at the jump thinking it had the perfect shape to do a 360 from take off to landing. Something only Fiola was doing down at the Orange Y. Lots were doing 360's but not to a landing.

I mumble something and this little kid starts yelling I was going to 360 the jump so I was committed.

Took 3-4 times to pull and I hade to land it about 3/4's around for the landing. Got a stand ovation from the crowd and the ABA would hold things up later in the day and on the fallowing day to do the jump again. They asked me to do it at other races but they never built a jump like that agian.

Like Stu said I need to sell myself. I sucked at racing.

I guess by some of these thread posts I am just a Brown Noser!

I remember a guy up at Merritt trying to do a 360 at a jump contest after the races, he never landed it but he sure tried. It was around 1975.

You guys are funny, a little strange, but funny none the less. laugh.gif

I post these by request. We had all pitched in and helped in some way to get this new track built. It was out behind a Boys Club in SoCal. We were goofing around hitting this "pile" of dirt. By todays standards it would be compared to a "spine". Up one side and down the other. Not very big, maybe 3 or 4 feet high.

Tinker was doing a little "kick out", and the best I could do was a 180, because I was doing it cross-up style. Stu, on the other hand, was steering the spin around with his front wheel leading the way. Pretty much against all that was normal at that time.

First scan is the cover of the paper to show the date.
Second scan is "the picture".
Third scan shows "the picture" and the date, just to be sure. (heck, look at the bike and what he is wearing, that will date it pretty well biggrin.gif )
Forth scan is just for my own ego to say, "hey, look at me!" cool.gif
